Thornton Time marches on! ln 1934, into Eb- onsburg Cambria High School came a new group of freshmen who were inexperienced hut eager. Like all fresh, they were thrilled to think they studied Algebra, and they were able to rattle off anno, amas, amatf, Nat- urally they were confused at first about 'fwho taught what, where's room so and sof' and which class comes next. But all this was soon over, and they settled down to the routine of high school life. It was not, how- ever, a monotonous existence. Not many weeks elapsed before Miss Davis had a get- acquainted party under way. Soon they adopted a constitution fol- lowed by a selection of green and white for class colors tmaybe to keep them fresh through the four years to come.l The words. He conquers who conquers himselff, step- pod right in and became the motto. In deep contrast to their mountain life, the little Lily of the Valley, was chosen as class flower. Time marches onl ln l935 they step- ped joyfully into the role of sophomores. The class meetings were pleasant affairs in which Miss Hetrick conducted the business matters. and Mr. Buck had the sophomores singing at the top of their voices to praise That Wonderful Mother of Mine. Yet per- haps the most remembered event of ,35 was the Saint Patrick's Day Party. Time marches on! 1936 was a busy year for the juniors. The prom was their responsihiliy and the only kill-joy for that coming event might perhaps have been the incessant demand of the treasurer, Class dues please. And yet that same prom turned out to be one of the best ever put on in E.C.H.S. A grand march was held, favors were distributed, a good orchestra was had, balloons, confetti and many colored stream- ers Hlled the air. Refreshments were served during the intermission. The class play, Through the Keyhole, was an experience as well as a source of delight. The character of the grandmother was taken so well that the young lady portraying it became quite absent-minded during practice. In fact, one night, instead of sitting on a sofa, she ah- sentmindedly sat on the floor. Time marches on! ltis 1938 already. Can that serious-faced young man be Merl Aitken? And those ardent young journalists pouring over senior write-ups-Olean Sulli- van, Audrey Evans, and President Read? George Staruch, Esther Jane Griffith, and Priscilla James have developed quite a lingo as salesmen-at least they were leaders in the broom-selling contest. And as for actors -The Tower Room Mystery showed they have some real talent. Class meetings were typical business af- fairs with pennants and pillows to be select- ed, Oracle projects to be discussed, outstand- ing seniors for the Oracleis Who's Who page to be chosen, invitations to be selected, and a class gift to be decided upon. Then count- less committees, the aftermath of any class meeting, were sure to follow. It is no wonder that the year made them feel like certain people of importance. But now it is time for them to leave - the shrill buzzer, the hasty scurrying from class to class, the endless duties, the casual chats at lockers-will soon be only memories.
