GIRLS SOFTBALL — BIG HIT In the spring of 1987 softball made its debut at Cambria Heights. Despite this being the first season ever, the girls, with the coaching of Mr. Lee Stanek, played like veterans, finishing with an 11-6 record. The team even advanced to the second level of District VI playoffs. Because there were only two starting seniors — Shelly Miller and Mary Ann Shevock — on this inaugural team, the 1988 team returned as an experienced, talented group led by Jill Link, Leah Yeager, Janell McCann, Lu Cunningham, and Kirstie Lieb. In addition to the veterans, several underclassmen also contributed to the team’s success. Although only in its second year, the girl's softball team and Coach Stanek have already developed the foundation for an outstanding program. 27

A MODEL FOR GREATNESS Practice. Perseverance. Winning. These three words describe the 1988 Boys’ Track team. The team put together its seventh successful season in a row this year, continually outsprinting, and out-distancing their closest competitors in striving for victory. Even through the pain of injuries, the team members relentlessly pursued their opponents. Throughout the season, the key was teamwork, for only by working together was the team able to complete such a successful season. 29
