IMPROVED TIMES MAKE SWIMMERS WINNERS G1 inishing their second season with a re- cord of 1-11 for the girls, and 4-8 for the boys, this year’s swim team saw six re- turning lettermen on the girls team while the boys team returned with nine let- termen. A surprise came from junior Brian Rairigh, who participated in three individ- ual events in District swimming. Brian is definitely one of the better swimmers on the boys team. Not far behind is Ron Legrand, senior and captain of the boys team. He made District swimming times in two events, (unior Amy Bortman, captain of the girl’s team, is also in District swimming. Coach Jerry Yeckley and girls advisor Mrs. Sowers, both feel the teams have come a long way since last season. After the second meet, this year’s teams had already improv- ed their times to be better than last year’s, greatly pleasing Coach Yeckley. He feels that as long as the times decrease through- out the season, the teams are winners. WINNING ON THE DIAMOND Despite losing seven of nine starters from last year’s team. Coach Bob Buck's baseball team remained competitive within the tough Tri-County League. Led by seniors Brian Kelly, a three year starter. Lyn Holtz, and Sean Noel, the team played aggressive Highlander baseball. The loss of many experienced ball players from the previous year’s team provided an opportunity for younger players like Chris Chemisky. Paul Dubyak, Nick Caretti, Kevin Lato, and Ary Bills to emerge. These younger players provided an intense enthusiasm and spirit of competition to the team. One of the highlights of the season again was the March 24-26 spring trip. On this trip the team played at Hagerstown. Md. and Hancock. Md.; plus, they played a double header under the lights at Berkley Springs. West Virginia. Through the years the Highlander baseball pro- gram has been great because each team followed the motto We don’t rebuild; we reload!’’ 26
