M K.U.. ____ -• cS- « After last year’s impressive performance, everyone thought that the 1987-88 girls' volleyball team would be a flop. But during the pre-season the girls worked hard and brought together a surprisingly strong team. Although C.H. was one of the shortest teams in the area, they also had one of the quickest. This quickness, and a will to succeed, enabled the girls to capture another undefeated season, the district VI title and also a 7th consecutive trip to states. At states the team equalled last year’s success, finishing third. Led by captain Lu Cunningham, the girls racked up an impressive record of 17-1. with their only loss coming at the hands of Richland in the Central Western Conference Championship. First year coach Barry Fox noted that he ‘‘really enjoyed working with the girls and hosting the first annual Cam- bria Heights volleyball tournament. The continuing success of the girls volleyball team proves that it is one of the greatest sports programs in Penn- sylvania. What the seniors on the volleyball team will always remember are the final games together at states, and the tears shed when it was over. Other fond memories were: Clams Marinare, Jill and Tammi’s film fest, Lu’s ac- robatics with the net, our meeting with Bon Jovi, and Bogie’s only burst of emotion!! 11 Leslie Striltmaller Michelle Willelt Standing: Coach Barry Fox, Annette Burkhart, Jennifer Gunther. Leading the team were junior Dave Miller and sophomore Dave Rizzo, who continually lowered their times throughout the season. The only senior team member, Rich Rito, was injured most of the sea- son. However, the team had nothing but pride in the record they achieved, which was a big improvement from last year's. As most teams will agree, the final score doesn't always reflect everything put into Ihe game. This was no different in C.H.'s ciise. as many of the games they lost were within a ten point margin. This year's team was lucky in that they had a chance to experience the addition of three point goal to high school basketball. This was the first year ever for three pointer in high school ball, and its addition proved to be successful for the Heights. The Lady Highlanders will always have many fond memories of the times they shared on and off the court. They put a lot of hard work into their season, as their win- ning record shows. The members of the girls’ basketball team will always remember: the byrd baths, Jill and Tammi’s adventures when riding the pine. ’’Quit holding me!’’, Sharon’s sucker punch, the pleasant visit down to J-town, the exciting overtime victories, but most of all Mrs. Murphy's “one more time! With only six returning lettermen and four freshmen on the Varsity Squad, there were only dreams of it becoming a winning season. But all the long practices, dedication, and caring paid off. as the CH grapplers ended their season with a 10-7-1 record. The Heightster's JV also had an outstanding season with a record of 15-2-1. The success of this team is due both to the coaching of Harry Murphy and Rick Bishop and to the combined leadership of the tri- captains. Dan Little. Jim McNulty and Darin Thomas. These seniors lea the team to victory but also showed each member of the squad friendship and loyalty, which are keys to winning. Coach Murphy commented. “This year’s wrestling team was a pleasant surprise. With only three seniors returning, a handful of Darin Thomas Jim McNulty 18 lettermen. and a tough eighteen dual meet schedule we were hoping to just be competitive, but instead we had a winning season with some very exciting matches. Our seniors Darin Thomas. Dan Little and Jim McNulty gave us the leadership we needed and our underclassmen followed their example by performing extremely well all season. I can truly say this has been one of my most enjoyable seasons as a wrestling coach.’ The wrestlers also had help and assistance from 10 dedicated matmaids. The matmaids for the 87-88 season are Anita Cronauer. Jenny Greiner. Michelle Ashurst, Shannon Link. Anita Kline. Donna Maslonick, Sandy Hoover. Melissa Lieb. Ixiri Buck and Missy Hey. They spent many long hours painting signs, cleaning mats and cheering the guys on to victory. The CH wrestlers had many fun and unforgettable moments. Some of these are: Scott dribbling down the hall at UPJ, Tank’s opponent at Central-Martinsburg. rubber rome stench. Smitty’s fire engine red ears before weighins. checking oil. and Craig’s bulging pants after weight loss. Dan Little Rob Weiland Boys |oe Lubert Show Gritty Competitiveness Skinned knees from diving for loose balls, quickness, constant hustle, and the three point shot were the hallmarks of this year’s boys basketball team. The team’s style of play constantly entertained their fans. Young, only Brian Kelly and Greg Abel are seniors, the team matured and improved throughout the season. First year head coach George Haluska noted that the team had eight starters giving good depth. With six starters — Greg Huber, Dave Miller, Scott Rudolph, Chris Lamb, Harry Vargo, and Randy Bills — returning next year, the future looks bright. Coach Haluska was pleased with the development of the team, for its success exceeded what many had expected from an inexperienced team lacking height. In fact, the boys lost seven games by four points or less, proving they could play with the best teams in the area. The team’s gritty competitiveness is a tribute to the great basketball tradition at Cambria Heights. What the players will most remember is: Richland game — 4 out of 32, Poor Defense!”, Ligonier’s hairstyle, Friday nights after the game at G.A.’s house, and C.L.’s imitations. IMPROVED TIMES MAKE SWIMMERS WINNERS G1 inishing their second season with a re- cord of 1-11 for the girls, and 4-8 for the boys, this year’s swim team saw six re- turning lettermen on the girls team while the boys team returned with nine let- termen. A surprise came from junior Brian Rairigh, who participated in three individ- ual events in District swimming. Brian is definitely one of the better swimmers on the boys team. Not far behind is Ron Legrand, senior and captain of the boys team. He made District swimming times in two events, (unior Amy Bortman, captain of the girl’s team, is also in District swimming. Coach Jerry Yeckley and girls advisor Mrs. Sowers, both feel the teams have come a long way since last season. After the second meet, this year’s teams had already improv- ed their times to be better than last year’s, greatly pleasing Coach Yeckley. He feels that as long as the times decrease through- out the season, the teams are winners. This year’s team had more experience and potential than the year before, and hope- fully will continue to improve in the years to come. Kirsi Row Coach |erry Yeckley, Advisor Mrs |anet Sowers. Led by seniors Brian Kelly, a three year starter. Lyn Holtz, and Sean Noel, the team played aggressive Highlander baseball. The loss of many experienced ball players from the previous year’s team provided an opportunity for younger players like Chris Chemisky. Paul Dubyak, Nick Caretti, Kevin Lato, and Ary Bills to emerge. These younger players provided an intense enthusiasm and spirit of competition to the team. One of the highlights of the season again was the March 24-26 spring trip. On this trip the team played at Hagerstown. Md. and Hancock. Md.; plus, they played a double header under the lights at Berkley Springs. West Virginia. Through the years the Highlander baseball pro- gram has been great because each team followed the motto We don’t rebuild; we reload!’’ 26 GIRLS SOFTBALL — BIG HIT In the spring of 1987 softball made its debut at Cambria Heights. Despite this being the first season ever, the girls, with the coaching of Mr. Lee Stanek, played like veterans, finishing with an 11-6 record. The team even advanced to the second level of District VI playoffs. Because there were only two starting seniors — Shelly Miller and Mary Ann Shevock — on this inaugural team, the 1988 team returned as an experienced, talented group led by Jill Link, Leah Yeager, Janell McCann, Lu Cunningham, and Kirstie Lieb. In addition to the veterans, several underclassmen also contributed to the team’s success. Although only in its second year, the girl's softball team and Coach Stanek have already developed the foundation for an outstanding program. 27 A MODEL FOR GREATNESS Practice. Perseverance. Winning. These three words describe the 1988 Boys’ Track team. The team put together its seventh successful season in a row this year, continually outsprinting, and out-distancing their closest competitors in striving for victory. Even through the pain of injuries, the team members relentlessly pursued their opponents. Throughout the season, the key was teamwork, for only by working together was the team able to complete such a successful season. 29 PRACTICE, PERSEVERANCE, WINNING T n the spring of 1987 an incredible event occurred; the girls' track team lost a meet, breaking a string of five consecutive undefeated seasons. Coach Sandy Murphy’s girls look at this loss as an op- portunity to build another long winning streak. Of the seventy-two girls who went out for the team, twenty-three are returning letter winners, thus pro- viding a strong nucleus upon which to build an- other winning season. Through the years the girls track team ha been one of the most admired sport programs because it continually wins due to the girls hard work and dedication. Their continued success is a model for greatness. 30 SCORE BOARD Football CH 0 Bishop Guilfoyle 23 9 Bishop McCort 7 7 HnhnsiowuVo-tech 0 0 Hollidaysburg 24 10 Peun Cambria 0 27 I.igonier Valiev 14 32 Central Cambi ia Portage 20 40 18 7 Bishop Carroll 7 10 Northern Cambria 0 0 District Playoffs Tyrone mi _. 32 CH 17 17 17 37 19 29 43 42 27 29 KT mauglCJowiihip inont J n Bfrnll CdTiemaugl rstmoil Hishuj Central Cambria Richland “Somerset Marion Center Johnstown Vo-Tech Forest Hills Blairsville Northern (Cambria Ferndale Central Cambria Bishop Carroll Penn Cambria Forest Hills Conemaugh Valley Portage Northern Cambria I 'Tndale ( ntral Cambria Bishop Carroll Penn Cambria Fort st Hills Conemaugh Valley Portage Central Western Championship Richland Districts 32 Somerset Altoona High Vollrvhnll 5-1 Cambria Heights 15-15 15-1-9 10-15-15 2-1 15-15 9-10 15-15 3-3 15-15 11-7 15-15 13-12 15-15 2-15-0 15-11-15 1-9 15-15 7-2 15-15 7-3 15-15 6-3 15-15 3-3 15-15 8-3 15-16 4-14 15-15 2-0 15-15 9-17-15 15-15-10 13-5 15-15 8-16-2 15-14-15 Varsilv Wrestling CH Kichlaml llollidaysburg F'eindale nlntrsville North St M Punxsutaw l Penn Cambria ® Central Martinshurjj OPPONENT 34 Glendale 25 Chestnut Ridge 21 Kent rat Cambria 29 Cuiyvensville 27 Ton nstown Vo-Tech 30 Forest Hills 21 United 15 Mo-Valley Jjjock wit . First, new courses have been added to the curriculum. An Honors English class for juniors was created; these students will go on to advanced work as seniors next year. Also, Advanced Industrial Arts I became a new course. Computers, particularly for word processing, are being increasingly used. To help improve career planning and determine academic skills, the guidance department replaced the NEDT test with PACT-f for tenth grade students. Also, SAT test preparation was widely taught to juniors in order to help these students to do their best on the vital SAT. Then, in March a number of teachers attended a conference in New Jersey toprepare for instruction on Thinking Skills that will be added to the curriculum. Finally, students who formerly attended Portage Occupational EducationalSchool began attending classes at the high school. New activities have also been added. Mrs. Catherine Cannone-Makin created a Scholastic Quiz Team allowing the students an opportunity to compete academically with other schools. Miss Eileen Choby organized a trip to Mexico for i wenty foreign language students. Under the guidance of Mr. Bill Schirf, the student council became a very active organization. Also, a musical was produced for the first time in many years. f inally, the foreign exchange program continues to grow. This year three students — Supree Amornpimol (Bangkok, Thailand) Esther Alvarez Gonzalez (Barcelona. Spain), and Samara Martinez Gonzalez (Mexico) brought their culture and friendship to CH. In order to get insights from the teachers about the greatness of Cambria Heights, the Highlander asked the teachers to answer one of these questions: What is one of the greatest experiences you have had as a teacher? When we look back upon all the memories that we’ve shared, we see your warm eyes and sweet smile that we hold so dear. Dave, you will never be forgotten by those of us you left behind. Even though the past is here no more, you will always remain a part of our lives. We can only hope that someday we will meet again in the presence of God. Pictures are unavailable for: S. I Tom Letso and Sue Bearer Greg Abel and Jessica Bursky Brian Gresco and Tina Fitzpatrick Friday, September 11, 1987 may have been just anoth- er rainy night to some people, but to many students in the senior class it will be a night they will never forget. On that night the Highlander squad played Bishop McCort for a victory and while they were playing, six girls and their es- corts who were dressed in their finest to represent the se- nior class as the 1987-88 Homecoming Court, waited anxiously for the big event. At halftime, as the enthusiasm and spirit of the crowd and the court peaked, the winner was announced: Cynthia Lubert! Later, when Cynthia was asked how she felt she didn’t quite know what to say, she was speechless. 97 CLASS SWEETHEARTS BEST DRESSED Brenda Keener, Jim Weymer, Barb Hoover. Ken Krise Sandra Hamblv. Loretta Weber was instrumental in creating VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). For her efforts she was elected president of the club. Bryan Kurtz was chosen as Parliamentarian. In VICA com- petition. Loretta placed second in nurses’ assistance and Bryan placed third in precision machining. In another organization DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), Lori Myers served as secretary. Teresa Lansberry placed second in competition. Also, Bernadette Davis was the president of the Future Farmers of America and represented the group in Harrisburg. In addition to the leadership and practical education learned by the students, teachers will also remember: Bentley singing his sweet love songs to Loretta, snowball battles while waiting for the bus at Tech, listening to Shawn Yeckley talk about his love life, running to get the back seat then piling four or five people into one seat; Jim Weymer — the comedian — sharing his great talents including his exotic dreams, and becoming closer friends by listening to each other. 108 Food Management: Jessica James. During the Christmas season these groups entertained the pub- lic with such numbers as 9th and 10th; “The Christ Child is Born,” “Young King,” and “White Christ- mas”; 11th and 12, “A Marshmallow World,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”; both groups performed the swinging version of “A Rock- in Christmas Eve.” The girls Chorus numbers in- cluded; “Spirit of Christmas,” “Just a Little Baby,” and “Santa’s Coming.” During the spring these groups rocked the night away with 50-60’s selection such as 9th and 10th: “Buddy Holly’s Best,” “All 1 Have to Do is Dream,” 11th and 12th; “Monster Mash,” “Twist and Shout”; and girls chorus; “Aquarius,” and “Supreme’s Se- lection.” As one more year passes by, these choral students will never forget all the great times they have shared together. They will miss those practices two weeks before the concert when no one knows their part. But most of all they will miss the singing and ne dancing they do to entertain the public. Tiald (ainiuarala. Iti.nl Millnt Through practice, hard work, determina- tion, and the guidance of Mr. William Gormish, this year’s Forensics team had a very successful season. On )anuary 24, the team traveled to Greater lohnstown for their first meet. Christine Shuma and Michelle Glova placed 3rd in Persuasive, and Anne Farabaugh placed 3rd in Informative. Then on February 5, they attended a tournament at Westmont where seven members picked up ribbons: Todd Cammarata — 3rd in Boys Extemporane- ous, Gina Baker — 3rd in Girls’ Extem- poraneous, Christine Shuma — 3rd in Per- suasive, Anne Farabaugh — 1st in Informative, Chrissy Bender — 1st in Po- etry, Eneida Echevarria — 2nd in Poetry, and Carolyn Shuma — 3rd in Poetry. Finally, at Forest Hills on February 15, Christine Shuma placed 3rd in Persuasive, Brad Miller took 3rd in Boys’ Extempora- neous, Todd Cammarata, 2nd in Boys’ Ex- temporaneous, Gina Baker, 3rd in Girls’ Ex- temporaneous, and Anne Farabaugh placed 1st in Informative. Last, on March 1, two people from each event went on to compete in the district competition at Saint Francis College. Why students participate in Forensics va- ries. Christine Shuma believes “It not only helps you make terrific friends, but it also expands our knowledge for the future.” Anne Farabaugh feels “It makes you more confident in yourself, more outgoing.” Whatever the reason. Forensics remains one of the most valuable activities in which a student can participate. Officers: Treasurer Cynthia I.ubert. President Farabaugh. Vice President — Anita Cronaunr Suzann Lehmier. There the band spent a day in Busch Gardens and a relaxing day on the beach. Then it was off to Kings Dominion where the band performed down the streets of the park. After the band again passed up the trip to the Pennsylvania State American Legion parade, they began practicing long and hard for competition at the state VFW Parade at Steelton, Pa. In this parade they won first place in the state. GREAT ONES The next item on the band’s list was performing their annual halftime show during the football games. The band moved quickly onto the field to their opening song “Moorside March. Next the band, col- 1st Row. L to R: |ohn R. Elias, Band director, Lana Lawrence, Sue Bearer. The band’s final song “Shaker tune” featured the bagpipes and the trumpet duet from Jay Klias and Kric Yahner. The band then performed their annual Christmas Concert in which they presented such classic songs as “Jingle Bells Forever,” Creensleeves,” and “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.” The stage band performed once again by playing “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Carol of the Drum,” and many other Christmas favorites. The stage band fea- tured songs such as “Pennsylvania 65000,” “Land of Make Believe” and “Mony Mony.” Of all the great experiences shared by the band perhaps the greatest occurred during the halftime show at the North- ern Cambria game. Motivated both by the fact that they followed the per- formance of the Slippery Rock Uni- versity marching band and more so by an article titled “La Bamba” written in the Barnesboro Star relating to the band’s performance of the Richie Va- lens hit song, the Highlander band brought thousands of wildly cheering fans to their feet to applaud the out- standing efforts of “The Great Ones.” r I Mie 87-88 Majorettes under the leadership of seniors Sandy Verdavoir and Sue Bearer sparkled during half- time performances. Whether twirling or dancing with sparkly silver pompoms, these six girls worked hard to dazzle audiences. They spent most of their fi ;e time to- gether also, practicing, painting signs to help raise school spirit or clipping newspapers to create a memory-filled scrapbook for the senior football players. Not one of them will ever forget Lana’s “heavy load”; Sally’s mudmask; Suzann’s mistaken identity; Sue’s “Peace and Love ; and Sandy and Jenny being “feature’’ majorettes. These twirlers developed many memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. HALFTIME 122 TREATS This year, the CH Colorguard added piz- zazz and sparkle to the halftime show. Led by Captain Carolyn Pellas and Rifle Sergeant Kathy O’Leary, the group of 23 flags and 8 rifles suffered through many long, hot summer practices to perfect their routines. Their perseverance paid off, though, when they treated the halftime crowds to a dazzling display of colorfully coordinated silks and rifles. Throughout the summer and the ten-game regular season, the girls picked up quite a few memories, such as learning how to do a paddlewheel, initiations, and Tammy’s out- burst on the bus to Johnstown Vo-Tech. All in all, the season was a success because of the dedicated efforts of all the girls. first Row: Carolyn Pellas (captain), (ackie Buck (co- captain). Second Row: Wendy Merriman. The purpose of AFJROTC is to acquaint high school students with the Aerospace Age. to develop informed citizens, strengthen character, promote an understanding of the citizen soldier in a democratic society and motivate students for careers in the United States Air Force. ROTC cadets are exposed to a diverse program, in addition to academics, in order to promote the mission of the program. One of the highlights of the program is the flying series; this academic year the cadets will have an opportunity to fly in three different types of aircraft: C-130 Hercules. KC-135 Stratotanker and C-141 Starlifter. A three day curriculum-in-action trip will be to McGuire AFB in New Jersey. This is the first visit for the cadets to that base. The cadets will also participate in or sponsor the following events: a visit to the Latrobe Air Show, sponsor a rocket meet for model rocketers, participate in six parades, participate in three national patriotic contests, sponsored two formal military dinners called a Dining-Out and a Dining-In, Christmas caroled at the Veteran’s Administration Home in Holidaysouru. sponsored a military career week, sponsored a CPR course, participated in a ROTC invitational volleyball tournament in Pittsburgh, and conduct an awards ceremony. Cadets have an opportunity to participate in several clubs within the ROTC organization such as drill team, color guard, model airplane, model rocket and ROTC Honor Socity. The cadets also sponsored a bike-a-thon to benefit Cystic Fibrosis. Members of the cadet staff, these are cadets with experience and who hold cadet officer positions, take the responsibility for the operations of the program. 129 FHA — A GREAT EXPERIENCE 1987-88 proved to be a very busy one for the Future Homemakers of America. Under the direction of Debra Yablinsky, the girls took part in many com- munity activities, fund raisers and school functions. Their community activities included playhours in Patton, Carrolltown. Hastings and Ashville. a two week summer fun school sponsored by the PTO, and a 4th of |uly activity afternoon at Patton Park sponsored by the Cambria Heights Jaycees. They participated in a variety of fund raisers such as the Holiday Stickers, Christmas Candles. Carnations for Valentine’s Day, and a Ham and cheese, pizza and hoagie sale. The chapter organized a twelve hour Dance Marathon in November in which prizes were awarded to those who danced the entire day and evening. FHA also sponsored dances, volun- teered as room guides at open house, and helped paint the SADD billboard. Among the many memories that were made this year are making ham and cheese sandwiches early Saturday morning, processing 750 carnations after school, and sorting through boxes and boxes and boxes of candles. The dance marathon will always stick in the minds of those who participated — not only for the fun. the exhaustion, and the sore feet, but also for all the support and encouragement that make the Future Homemakers of America the great organization that it is. Throughout the year, the Students Against Drunk Driving made many at- tempts to convince the student body that drink- ing and driving DO NOT mix. These attempts include having posters put up around the school emphasizing the horrors of drunk drivers and scheduling a “Ghostout.” One student was cho- sen, at random, every 17 minutes as the next “victim” of a drunk driver. These “Victims” spent the rest of the day in isolation from the other students, further revealing the effects of death. At the end of the day, fifteen students were “killed” by a drunk driver. Due to the “Ghostout” the Chapter’s membership almost doubled. The chapter is hoping to increase their membership and activities in the future years. Stay Alive Don’t Drink and Drive. 133 ii YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN’’ ' Phis year Cambria Heights presented the musical “You're a Good -I Man Charlie Brown,” which captures many of the memorable scenes created by Charles Schultz in everyone's favorite Sunday morning comic strip. These included Charlie Brown’s kite, Lucy’s psychiatric help, Linus’s blanket, Snoopy’s Red Baron, Schroeder’s piano, and Patty’s baseball game. It also portrayed events in the lives of the six characters and reminded the audience of the fears, doubts, and happy times of their own childhoods. “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown was directed by Mrs. Caryl Bowman, Mrs. Debra Yablinsky, Mr. William Schirf and Mr. Glenn Kerr. The directors, cast, chorus and all the stage committees worked three long months learning lines, perfecting songs and dance steps, creating the set, setting the lights and making eve- rything perfect for the moment the curtain went up opening night. When the Highlander editors — Leslie Strittmatter, Carolyn Pel- las, Tammy Kutruff, Carol Gaul and Anita Cronauer — sat down to plan the yearbook in the early fall, the first question they raised was “What can we do differently?” While many of the yearbook pages — senior portraits and information, directory, baby pictures, etc. — remain similar from year to year because of tradition, the editors dared staff members to search for new lay-out techniques and organization. The end result is that the 1988 High- lander is a mixture of innovation and tradition. One major change is that the entire yearbook is organized by the theme “Great Scots” with the staff fo- cusing on the many ways that Cambria Heights is a great school. Also, in lay- outs, larger, more dramatic pictures were used when possible. Some sec- tions, such as Classes and Vo-Tech were completely revamped. The 1988 Highlander continues to be a great yearbook because the staff members are willing to pay the price for great- ness — initiative, hard work, and ded- ication. In addition to the Highlander, Cambria Heights also has a video yearbook di- rected by Mr. Bill Crowell. Just in its second year of existence, the video yearbook has attracted the attention of the student body. Editing the huge amount of video tape is an awesome job, but the end product is a treasure that students can watch for a life-time. Editors: 1st: Carolyn Pellas. The six girls had to stay long hours after school proofreading, typing, and laying out the five issues of Plaid Talk. The end result? The students got to enjoy their school newspaper and the reporters and ed- itors had the satisfaction of knowing that they contrib- uted to it. Mr. Paul Blackham, the advisor, helped out by offering his opinions on certain subjects. In addition, he nominated several hard-working and dedicated report- ers for induction into the Quill and Scroll Club, an honorary society for high school journalists. The Quill and Scroll club, an international honor society for high school journalists, is a new addition to Cambria Heights extracur- ricular activities. The nine members of this prestigious organization met throughout the year, the club members sold candy to help finance a trip to Altoona. In order to be accepted into Quill and Scroll, the students had to meet certain criteria. They were nominated by either Mr. Paul Baran or Mr. Paul Blackham, depending on whether they were involved with the yearbook or Plaid Talk. Final selections were made by Mr. Schirf, the advisor of Quill and Scroll, and formal induction ceremonies were held in May. SUIT: 1st l.ynette Kline. Lome Smego. Eneida Echevarria. Patti Shank.
