The most obvious chanp switch from mods to periods. Since the creation of the new high school, the school day has been structured o' 1 P mods with most classes being two consecutive mods. This year class time was changed to eight periods of minutes with three half hour lunch periods. Even the lunch periods themselves changed when a salad bar was addec menu. The change from mods to periods was. in part, necessitated by the new Pennsylvania graduation requirements, seniors are under the old regulations, all the other students now must earn 21 credits in order to graduate. Therefore, this year took more required math and science courses than their older brothers and sisters did. Also, computer study has a growing area of interest in the curriculum. Because of a variety of requirements, business students in particular have scramble to fulfill the two credits of Arts and Humanities. Finally, because students have had to take more credits, less time has been spent in study centers meaning more homework has to be done at home. Other changes have occurred, too. In sports three new athletics sports have been added to varsity competition. In the fall the cross country team was coached by Mr. Bruce Douty and Major Anthony Shroyer. In the winter a new swim team was organized and coached by Mr. Gerry Yeckley and chaperone Miss Patricia Easly. Then in the spring a new girls’ softball program was begun. In the academic area of extracurricular activities, Mr. William Schirf began the Quill and Scroll Society for those students active- ly involved in creating the student newspaper or yearbook. Also, FHA, and NHS joined forces to create a Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) organization to deal with the problems of mixing alcohol and automobiles. Finally, two foreign exchange students came to Cambria Heights. Jeppe Glaser from Denmark spent the first quarter of the year while Alma Lorena Murillo spent the entire year learning and making new friends at Cambria Heights. “What do you like most about being a teacher?” The exchanging of thoughts with thinking students Paul A Baran Lehigh University. Under (he supervision of Mrs. Debre Yeblinsky. this years Future Homemakers of America have outdone themselves through the variety of projects with which the organization is involved One of the most significant projects the FHA undertook was to work in conjunction with the National Honor Society to create a Students Against Drunk Driv- ing program. SADD has kept the student body's attention focused on the dangers of drinking and driving. To further their SADD program FHA held a dance marathon in April with the pro- ceeds going to create a SADD billboard of a poster selected in a student contest. FHA also continued its work with the junior class in helping to plan a Prom Afterglow. Another of FHA's traditions include Adopt-A-Grandparent at Haida Manor and after school Play Hours to brighten the faces of both the young and the old. A first for the chapter this year was finding young men who were willing to join the group to help FHA create new activities for the student body The members of FHA will never forget the exciting experiences they have encountered during the past year Officers: President vice president secretary treasurer Kim Krug Public relations: Michelle Ashurst Brend Miller Advisor: Mrs. Debra Anita Cronauer Yablinsky Michelle Lato 79 PLAID TALK Continues Successful Reporting T nder the direction of Mr. Paul Blackham, who replaced Mr. William Schirf as advisor, the editors and staff of Plaid Talk worked diligently to produce a comprehensive and entertaining report of school events and personalities throughout the year. The Mouse that Roared, from the book by Leonard Wibberley, drew crowds to the Clair j. Urich auditorium on 3, 4 April 1987. The Duchess Glorianna the Twelfth, sovereign of Grand Fenwick, Count Mountjoy and David Benter — The Privy Council — are faced with a dilemma. The Market for Grand Fenwick’s wine, their chief export had been stolen by a California imitation. Upon the suggestion of Telly Bascom, Glorianna realizes that their only choice of action to avoid bankruptcy is to declare war on the United States and lose. After all, the U.S. is known to always pro- vide aid to the former adver- sary to help rebuild its economy. And so begins the tale of The Mouse that Roared.” The county of Grand Fenwick, population six thousand, takes as prisoners Colonel Snippet and Professor Konkints. More importantly, they gain control of the United State’s Q (quadium) bomb which has the capacity to blow up Europe. Cast: 1st row — Theresa Burgoon. Also, the staff argued about how to organize the book best and whether or not to include the diploma page (Those wanting the diploma page won.) The band moved quickly onto the field to their opening song; the fast moving Crown Imperial.” The middle song alternated between Miami Heat” and “Rock in the U.S.A. The col- orguard, rifles and majorettes added color and pizzaz to each of these songs by performing with long, brightly col- ored flags and snappy dance steps. The band's final song, “Londonary Air,” featured the highland fling, bringing a climactic end to the halftime performance. The second item on the band’s list of activities was the Christmas concert. A brass sextet and sax quartet were featured at the beginning of the concert. They presented such classic Christmas songs as “Up on the Housetop, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas,” “Deck the Halls,” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain. When the curtain opened, the band joined the brass sextet and sax quartet in an original arrangement of )ingle Bells.” The band then played A Marshmallow World, “Joy Parade,” “Jingo Jango,” and finally, March on a Scot- tish Air,” which featured the bagpipes. The concert ended with a frenzy of lights, balloons, and streamers, wishing everyone a Happy New Year. ... u. The band’s next performance was the spring concert. The band's concert featured such songs as American rolk Rhapsody No. 4, Glenn Miller in Concert,” “Bugler’s Holiday, and a medley of songs from the 50s and 60s entitl- ed Classic Rock and Roll. The newly formed stage band was once again featured as added entertainment for the younger audience as they played many contemporary songs. ROTC HAS LOFTY MISSION The purpose of AFJROTC is to acquaint high school students with the Aerospace Age. to develop informed citizens, strengthen character, promote an understanding of the citizen soldier in a democratic society and motivate students for careers in the United States Air Force. To promote the mission of the program, ROTC cadets are exposed to a diverse program in addi- tion to academics. They have available to them a drill team, color guard, model airplane club, model rocket club, and an ROTC Honor Society. Cadets participate in curriculum-in-action trips to military installations or other associated organizations, such as senior ROTC groups. Fly- ing is part of the program; every year cadets are flown oy the Air Force in KC-135 Stratotankers or C-130 Hercules type aircraft. Two military dinners are conducted each year; the fall dinner is called the Dining-Out and the spring affair a Dining-In. Every year the students travel to an air show to witness flying and static exhibitions. The rocket club participates in rocket meets out of town and also hosts an annual rocket meet in the Fall. Members of the Cadet Staff, these are cadets who are of cadet officer and senior NCO (Non Commissioned Officer) rank, take respon- sibility for the operation of the program. The Cadet Staff handles the operation of the dinners, annual military ball, a CPR course which is run every year, and virtually all of the programs. The cadets are active in public affairs too by sponsoring a Cystic Fibrosis Bike-a-Thon, hign school dances, and Christmas caroling at Veterans’ hospitals. Vo-Tech 1st Row: Paula Vermeulin. Mr. William Marshall. The Student Council, a group com- posed of five representatives from each of the four classes, had a very productive year. Their year started in September when the ballots were cast and the members were an- nounced. From that day on. the Coun- cil worked hard to better the at- mosphere and spirit of their classmates. Soda and juice machines, along with a copying machine put in the library for student use. were just a few of the additions made to the school by the student organization. The group also sponsored many assembly programs and held the first annual semi-formal Christmas Ball at Cambria Heights. In addition to working on school projects, several members attended conferences at other area schools to gain experience with different student councils. Matt Luther and Jill Link at- tended the I U-8 Student Forum meetings held in Johnstown. Gretchen Nuss. Ed Yeaaer and Betsy Simpson went to the PASC state conference held in Altoona. During these meetings, the students obtained many new ideas and made many friends. Each year the AFJROTC provides an opportuni- ty to issue scholarships to outstanding cadets. This year's recipients include Joe Huber and Shane Merriman. To qualify, a student must obtain a minimum of 1100 on the SATs and a grade point average of 3.0. In addition to being an active cadet, each candidate must be involved in several extracurricular ac- tivities. Included in the four year scholarship are free tui- tion. books, lab tees, and pay- ment of $100 a month. Fur- thermore. the student must serve the Air Force for a period of four years upon graduation from college. Joe Huber received his scholarship in accounting and plans to attend Penn State University in the fall. Shane Merriman also plans to attend Penn State with a major in engineering. Joe Huber Cambria Heights became a charter member of Quill and Scroll, an international honor socie- ty for high school journalists, in May of 1986 when eight members were inducted. This year under the direction of Mr. William Schirf the four remaining students formed the Cambria Heights Quill and Scroll Club. President Gretchen Nuss, Vice President Dawn Marshall, Secretary Gina M. Turko and Treasurer Michelle Lato worked together to organize the club. By-laws, a constitution and a letterhead were among the first goals set and accomplished by this dedicated foursome. Fundraisers were also chosen and carried out this year. The major emphasis, however, was a building of a sturdy, solid foundation upon which, in future years, an active, successful organization can be built. Shane Merriman Quill and Scroll 1st row: Sec. Renae Griffith The 1986-87 Cheerleading Squad, under the direction of Mrs. Linda Zumovich and Mrs. Christine Gabrielson, were kept very busy preparing for pep rallies, painting signs, and cheering for all atnletic events. Their hard work and ambition became a great factor to lead all Highlander teams to outstanding seasons. The cheerleaders will always treasure the special moments that came along with cheering which consisted of: the whipped cream at initia- tion, learning to grin and bear it, our reducing squad, dressing up as raisins and Kristie swatting Anita, receiving flowers from the football, boys basketball, ana wrestling teams, the fashion show, being “lovely” cheerleaders, Anita’s bad luck with basketballs, and always being “Champions!” Even though there were no seniors on the squad, this year, there were still a few tears shed during senior nights! 99 VO-TECH One of the changes that occurred with Vo-Tech students in 1986-87 was that only juniors attended Vo-Tech in the morning while seniors attended in the afternoon. This change in organization allowed for a more effi- cient use of time at Vo-Tech. Along with learning practical skills through which a student may earn a liv- ing. many students have the opportunity to compete with other vocational students throughout the region and state. As always, students from Admiral Peary Vo-Tech performed well in the competition that included both a written examination and a demonstration of the practical skills. Among other students Elaine Ponchok. Paula Vermeulin. Teresa Lansberry. Cathy Luzier. and Kathy O'Leary placed highly in their in- dividual areas of competition. For many vo-tech students the most memorable moments that they have had in high school have come from ex- periences at vo-tech or traveling to vo-tech. mm tni Health Occupations: Andrea Wholaver 101 Carpentry: Kneeling: Gus Himmel. Unfortunately, the season began with a big loss to tough Bishop Guilfoyle Over the next three games the best CH could do was to tie Bishop McCorl; losing to eventual Quad A champ lohnstown Vo-Tech and Quad A Hollidaysburg each by a close score. Thus, this 0-3-1 team already losing 6-0 to arch-rival Penn Cambria, faced its darkest moment One of its stars. Elmer Weaver, suffered a season ending in|ury as the team desperately fought to keep Penn Cambria out of the end zone for another score With Weaver gone, the team hung together to stop PC in the shadow of the goal line. Then lightning seemed to strike, energizing the team. During halftime a vicious thunder and lightning storm struck the stadium. The start of the second half was held up for some minutes. Before the regular season began, the girls par- ticipated in the V-Blast Tournament in Bethlehem, PA where they placed se- cond out of sixteen teams from throughout the state. After this im- pressive showing, the team stormed through its regular season undefeated, overpowering local competition. Under the direction of first year coach Robert Kasun, and with the leadership of senior Shelly Miller the girls again won the District VI championship. Finally though, in the state tourney the volleyball team fell in defeat to eventual state champion, Norwin, thus finishing third in the state. In individual honors Shelly Miller accepted a scholarship to play volleyball at Temple University thus becoming Cambria Heights’ first Division I volleyball athlete. Chris excelled in assists, steals, points and rebounding while Paula also led the team in rebounding and steals. Also, Coach Murphy was very proud of senior Mary Ann Shevok who was always well prepared to take on either Paula's or Chris’ position. Stewart, Wayne Wholaver 120 In 1986 the boys basketball team reached a pinnacle of success never achieved before by a CH boys’ basket- ball team — they won the District VI Championship then continued on in the state play-offs losing to even- tual Western winner Aliquippa by one point. Although the 1987 team lost two important starters from the championship team — Mike Lamb and Chris Price — this year’s team returned three starters. Bill Marshal). Elmer Weaver, and Mike Haluska. These three starters were joined by five other experienced seniors to make the team a senior dominated, deep, experienced group. Therefore, when Coach Bruce Frycklund addressed the student body at the preseason pep rally, he promised that this year's team would also be challenging to repeat as District champion. Despite a mid-season let-down caused by injury and illness involving Bill Marshall and Elmer Weaver, the cagers rebounded fulfilling Coach Frycklund’s prophesy that they would be one of the finest teams in the area Tall, the starters; height ranged from Haluska’s 6'-0' to Marshall’s 6'6 . the team’s strength was its inside game, defense and rebounding. When opponents packed their defense in to try to stop Weaver. Marshall, and) R Stewart. Haluska and Jeff Weakland hit from the outside One of the many highlights of the season was Elmer Weaver breaking the 1000 point career mark, making him one of the top two scorers in Cambria Heights' history. Many of Weaver's points through the years came on fine assists from Mike Haluska and Bill Marshall. The threesome of Weaver. Marshall anaHalusxa were varsi- ty starters for three years. Their play, along with the contributions from other team members will be remembered in the lore of Cambria Heights basketball. In March of 1986 the Cambria Heights' wrestling program reach- ed the pinnacle of success As the entire school listened to the radio broadcast of the state finals. Dave Yahner became the first state wrestling champion in Cambria Heights history 1987 promised to bring the team an even higher level of achievement as Dave would defend his state title and inspire other teammates to match his success Then in the very first tournament of the 1986-87 wrestling season at Richland, disaster struck. Dave Yahner suffered a devastating knee injury that required surgery and months of rehabilitation, wip ing out his senior year of competition Following Yahner's injury, other experienced wrestlers — Matt Luther. Tim Sammarco. and |im McNulty were decked by various injuries. The decimated team did its best to struggle to a 1-14 dual meet record Many long and hard hours were spent in the rubber room after school practicing for the matches Consisting of 22 boys, the team showed much improvement as the season progressed The team was led by two outstanding wrestlers — captains |im Kline and |ohn Riz- zo. These two athletes finished first in the sectional finals and went on to compete in the District VI finals hoping to bring Cambria Heights home a winning victory. Mr Murphy summarized the year by saying. Even with a losing season as ours, the boys are prepared for next year. What the wrestlers will most likely remember after the season are all of the disappointing injuries, finishing second in the Central Cam- bria Christmas Tournament. Dave Yahner's State Championship. Ken McNulty and Eric Yeckley. the boys' swim team captured two wins in their initial season Although two wins in many sports is not considered a good season, the first year team felt proud ot their accomplishments. With seniors Terri Anderson. Renee Shortencarrier. Sana Hicks. Kelly Cence and Melissa Dubyak. the girls team, advised by Miss Patricia Easly. also achieved a fine season. The one-point victory over Bishop McCort proved to be the most memorable moment for the team A number of swimmers participated in districts held February 21st These included the four relay teams and Ron Legrand and Terri Anderson in the 50 yd freestyle. Cambria Heights placed sixth out of the 25 schools represented, a big accomplishment for the first year team. . .... Coach Yeckley was pleased with the season and felt it was a great success The support from the public and determination of the swim- mers was excellent ” Although one-third of the squad was seniors. Made up of only seniors and freshmen, the team was paced by high scorer Arnold Caretti. In past-season competi- tion the team placed fourth out of eight teams at the Conference meet and eighth out of six- teen teams at Districts. The JV team placed third in the Conference and Dave Rizzo placed first at Districts. What the team will remember most about their season is: “Schleem,” WJAC “Shooting the moon” at conferences, Picking up the pace, Pella blowing a two minute head start on the girls, Pat liking C.C. so much, he decided to stay, and Arnie’s “morning sickness.” Seniors: 1st Row — John Rizzo. Arnold Caretti. Mark Lamont 2nd Row — Shane Merriman, Joe Huber, Eric Yeckley, Jerry Miller. Jeff Pellas T n recent years, the boy’s track program has crawl- ed out from under the shadow of the very suc- cessful girl’s program by developing its own winning identity. This year’s boy’s track group was led by a powerful group of seniors — Arnie Caretti, Jeff Pellas, Scott Price, Jerry Miller, Eric Yeckley, John Rizzo, and Mark Lamont — and talented juniors, Dan Little, and Rob Wieland. The team’s success against such strong schools as Central Cambria, Ligonier Valley, Somerset, and Richland is a result of hard practices, perseverance, and, above all, teamwork. 129 GIRLS STRESS TEAMWORK This season, the Lady Highlanders were fighting to uphold their title as the Allegheny Mountain Conference Champs. Coach Sandy Murphy looked towards her seniors such as Kelly Cence in hurdles, Chris Goldian and Shelly Miller in middle distances. MaryAnn Shevok in field, Mandy Mozina in long distances and Paula Yeckley in sprinting, for the leadership in their year of rebuilding. Despite the loss of many champion seniors, coaches Sandra Murphy and Barb Taylor were quite hopeful and excited about the season as many letter winners returned. This year's departing seniors will always recall the closeness felt among the team. For. team- work was always stressed among Girls' Track Team. As a result, many new and important friendships developed and will be forever cherished. 130 Senior Power Equals Diamond Dynamo When asked to identify the strength of the '87 CH baseball team. Coach Bob Buck stated “Seniors!” Five starters from last year’s 12-4 team returned to lead the Highlanders; Matt Luther, Tim Sam- marco, Ken Stockley, Marc Letso, Ed Yeager, and Tom Ertter along with some talented underclassmen again make Cambria Heights a diamond dynamo. The strongest area of the team is its pitching depth which is necessary for success in a grueling twenty game schedule. A new experience was enjoyed by the team this year, also. In late March the team escaped the cold mountains of Central-Western Pennsylvania to journey for a pre-season spring train- ing trip to play schools in Hagerstown, Met., Berkley Springs, W.V., and Charlestown, W.V. Tim Sammarco Doug Adams Tom Ertter Marc Letso Matt Luther Ed Yeager 132 The scoreboard tells the story of a team that comes from behind 133 134 On occasion in high school a special class comes along filled with excellent athletes who shine individually and help their teams to great success. The Class of 1987 is such a class. Among other sports accomplishments, this year's seniors have helped to contribute to a state volleyball championship, District 6 basketball championship, undefeated girls' track teams, and the first ever state wrestl- ins championship. Perhaps because of the interest and success in athletics, three new sports — cross country, swimming, and girls soft- ball — were added to varsity competition thus offering fur- ther athletic opportunities to more students. One of the proofs of the class's athletic prowess is that it numbers among its members a number of athletes that have been heavily recruited by colleges. Shelly Miller earned a full scholarship to Temple University to continue playing volleyball. Also, before nis injury. Dave Yahner was wooea by the major wrestling powers in the country. Bill Marshall had to weigh offers to play both football ana basketball. Ed Yeager's record setting yardage on the gridiron drew atten- tion. Also. Elmer Weaver’s all around athletic ability caught coaches’ eyes. Marc Letso’s baseball ability made nim tne focus of professional scouts. Other Seniors like Ken Stockley, Matt Luther, Tim Sam- marco. Arnie Caretti, Chris Coldian, Paula Yeckley, Andrea Wholaver. and others made major contributions as multiple letter winners. All of these athletes have been very fine students also. Thus, the Class of 87 will be remembered as a class of winners both on and off the field. 135 Class Will We the members of 1987 graduating class of Cambria Heights, do generously bequeath our assorted talents, trinkets, assets, and mementos to deserving underclassmen.
