The greatest change took place on the administrative level with Mr. Stephen Bakajaza social studies teacher administrative assis- tant taking sick leave; then Mr. Donald Resko, who had been the high school principal for twenty-one years, also went on sick leave in October, then subsequently retired. Mr. Stephen Trovato replaced Mr. Resko while Mr. Bill Marshall became the head teacher. Other changes occurred also. More assemblies, including presen- tations on hypnosis and nuclear war, were held. Pep rallies were ex- panded to give instruction on the different sports. Student govern- ment involvement increased, too. In the classroom students found themselves taking more math and science courses because of increased state requirements. Those students who needed help improving basic skills were tutored by Mrs Jaren Powell. And often students could be heard counting 12323 because the English department emphasized Power Writing, a new program originated by Dr. J. E. Sparks, a professor from UCLA who made presentations to several classes. Also, the school board instituted a new policy on extra-curricular activities. If a student failed a course in the previous nine weeks, in- cluding the fourth quarter of the previous year, that student would be ineligible for participation in any extra activity. After some uproar, the students seemed to study harder as the failure lists decreased. Finally, January 28, 1986, a snow day, will be remembered forever because Christa McAuliffe, who represented all teachers in her pursuit of educational opportunities, died in the fiery blast of the space shuttle Challenger. It was his plan, I guess but with you, He took one of the best. You are definitely one person I will never forget and I thank God always for the day W'e met. You w'ere special, Paul as good a person as anyone could be. I hope that someday I w ill be able to see why God took you away from us who cared, us privileged people whose life you shared. Paul, watch out for us down here because I know that God now holds you near and I pray that you are happy and that someday I, too, w ill be with you in heaven w here God w ill care for me. I miss you, Paul. Could it be true? I can feel it in the air I know your music is still here, and when 1 close my eyes and sing. I hear you harmonizing. You left us without reason not too long ago, hut I know you're still with us Paul even though, we can t see you Can you see us' Could it he true' I know I couldn't let you go, leave without a song. because music is what you lived lor, and life has done you wrung This song I wrote for you will get through to you Canild it he true' I know that the song you sung will never go away, and I know that we ll sing together, on that chosen day We ll sing with you, the lucky few (a uld it he true' On that day I sat in church cried as I prayed. I saw the good Lord looking down on you w ith a guitar for you to play I saw you pick up that guitar. Let your fingers strum, and I knew right then that the day would come when together we would run again with you. the lucky few. Could it be true' As a friend we couldn't ask you fur more loyalty and trust, and I hope this song means as much to you as you Paul mean to us. We ll meet again with you someday with you. Could it be true' I can feel it in the air. I know your music is still here, and when I close my eyes and sing. I hear you harmonizing Sam Pagano 16 Carolyn Rusnak _ Kevin £.Jn na omaS fl. P ifty juniors and seniors dreaded February 28 ■ because that was deadline for the completion of the 1986 Highlander. After beginning the book early in the fall by selecting editors then having the annual battle over color and style for the cover (this year the staff decided to be unconventional and choose white), the staff settled in for the long pro- cess of organizing information, indentifying pic- tures, writing copy, typing, and counting picas to lay out material. As the end of February approached the staff worked overtime in the evenings and during all available free centers. Under the able leadership of senior editors, Lisa Kline, Russ Miller, and Angie Ceccoli, the staff strived to have the yearbook reflect the diversity of student life at Cambria Heights. When the 28th arrived, the staff breathed a relieved sigh as the many pages were mailed to Taylor Publishing in Dallas for printing. Another dreaded deadline had been met. This year's production of You Can't Take It With You, directed by Mrs. Donna Depto, went off with a big bang literally. The Vanderhof Sycamorel Carmichael household is continually in chaos, with fireworks going off at all times day and night from Paul Sycamore’s and Mr. DePinna’s fireworks factory in the basement of the two story brownstone. Paul's wife. Penny, is a playwright. She got started eight years ago when a typewriter was delivered to the house by mistake. One of Penny's and Paul's daughters, Essie, is a would be ballet prima dona who has been studying ballet for eight years, and is just waiting to be discovered. Ed Carmichael, Essie's husband, plays the xylophone and has a yearly income of twenty eight dollars and fifty cents. Heading up this daffy bunch is Grandpa Martin Vanderhof whose main interests are snake hunting, playing dans, going to commencement ceremonies, and evading taxation. Somehow, a normal daughter, Alice, comes out of this family. When Alice announces that her fiancee, Tony Kirby, son of the Wallstreet tycoon, Mr. Anthony Kirby, is coming with his parents for supper, she never planned that they would come on the wrong night, with every member of the Vanderhof family in all their glory. His prediction was very accurate as the I9H6 Forensics Tram brought home more ribbons than ever before. Another accomplishment was making the student body more aware of exactly what Forensics really was This goal was reached by making ' pep signs for the team which w-cre hung on the common wall. Perhaps, the most effective action was providing a forensics demonstration in the spring, where the team members presented their selection for the underclassmen Members of the '86 team are likely to remember for a long time: get- ting out 5th mod (btfort Trig.) on the day of the meet, the bus rides to Westmont, the ribbons won, and of course, beating Blacklick to McDonald's! The winners at the First meet (I 8 86) were 3rd place: Annette M Cronauer. Drama Margie Hite, Prose 2nd place: Jeff Pellas, Prose Gina M Turko, Persuasive As a team, C H Placed 3rd in Poetry and Persuasive and 2nd in Poetry and Drama. Informative As a team, C. H placed 3rd in Prose, 2nd in Informative and 1st in persuasive. The third meet, although providing us with only two ribbons, was a very important meet, nontheless. The scores of many members would be the determining factor on who would advance to Districts. 2nd place Rob McNulty, Poetry 1st place Kristina Smynchynsky, Girls Fxtcmp. As a team, C. H placed 3rd in Drama. 2nd in Poetry and 1st in Girls Extemp. Deb Crow-ell, Denise Sheehan. Tanya McCoy, Jodi Campbell, Donna Shero. The 1985-86 Varsity Cheerleading squad was unique because it consisted of seven seniors and three sophomores. The senior dominated squad helped enthuse fans, which in turn helped the teams play to their maximum ability. This year the squad, under the direction of Mrs. Gloria Crowell and Mrs. Linda Zumovitch, were kept busy setting up pep rallies, painting signs, and cheering for basketball, wrestling, and football. Some of the memories they’ve shared and won’t forget are: receiving flowers from the football and basketball teams, having cheers an- nounced over the loudspeaker at home football games, watching the balloons released by the fans as the team came out on the field, throwing footballs when our team scored, cheering in the ram the night of the Portage game, decorating for the N.C. game, wearing Santa hats, being guardian cheerleaders, the bad luck that fol- lowed when Mrs Z. was around, and the time when Deb's perfect dunk wackcd Michele on the head 106 JUNIOR VARSITY — 1st row Sherry Morgan. After losing the opening game to powerhouse Bishop Guilfoyle, the team pulled itself together and began winning, through a combina- tion of tough defense and explosive offense. The highpoint of the year had to be the rugged finale with arch-rival Northern Cambria. Playing before a packed stadium, CH held NC at the goal line in the closing seconds to preserve a 0-0 tie that felt like a win. A number of players had great seasons. Ed Yeager ran for 1079 yards (5.3 avg.) thrilling crowds with both his power and speed. Mark Stocldey threw for 671 yards and 9 TDs. His favorite receiver was Jeff Polites who caught passes for 259 yards and 7 TDs. John McGowan and Kris Price starred in both catching the ball and defending against the pass. Dave Yahner, Matt Crowell, John Blake, Jim McCann, and Ed Link anchored defense. Finally, on many occasions Brett Shreyer rescued the team with booming punts. Among many memories, the team will particularly remember: the first day of camp (temp. 95-100), sled day, Ed Yeager being married to the seven man sled, popsicle break, Chris Gibbons' chant on the bus, NC's missed field goal to end the game, Kris Price's signals to the Portage bench, making commercials for the TV people, watching films, and Bald Thomas being married to the tackling dummy. 1« row: Ron Macalus, Brett Schrcyer, Doug Adams, Ed Yeager, John McGowan, Man Crowell, Sean Noel, Mike Behe, Lyn Holtz, Matt Luther 2nd row: Ivan Mulligan — Mgr, Jeff Polites, John Blake, Bill Yecldey, Jim McCann, Ken Stocldey, Mike Rematt, Dave Yahner, Bernic Whitcford, Joe Fisanick, Daryl Haluska. 3rd row: Jim Kline, Rodney Ropp, John Mertens, Rick Mulhollen, Chris Gibbons, Mike Weiland, Tim Sammarco, Bob Schirf, John Eckcnrode, Sean Miller, Ray Wendckier— Mgr. 4th row: Edgar Link, Darin Thomas, Mark Stockley, Kris Price, BUI Marshall. This ex- traordinary achievement was earned through a combination of rugged practice, excellent coaching provided by Denny Shulick and Karen Haluska, and good leadership and athletic skill from seniors Melinda Selby, Kim Eckenrode, Renee Gresh, and Angela Ceccoli. The only disappointing moment in the season was the team's loss to Richland in the conference title match. But having gone through the regular season undefeated, the girls rebounded to capture the state title at IUP causing district wide celebration. The girls will always remember: eating at Hoss', Angj driving the bus, Raisin'' and Grapes, water battle techniques, the volleyball version to Shout, JAMFS and, of course, winning the state championship. 116 Kim Eckenrode — Outside Hitter Renee Gresh — Setter Lori Westrick — Outside Hitter 117 JUNIOR VARSITY — Kneeling: Anita Kline, Paula Kirkpatrick, Lori Burkhart, Barb Lcchene, Angela Farabaugh. The girls also captured 1st place honors in the Christmas tournament at Marion Center with Kim Eckenrode, Sue Miller, and Melinda Selby being selected to the all-toumey team. Melinda Selby led the team in points, rebounds, and weals, and became the school's all-time leading scorer, breaking the 1000 point plateau early in the season against Richland Chris Goldtan led the team in the assists category. The team will miss the fine talents of seniors Lisa Byrnes, Kim Cicero, Kim Eckenrode, Sue Miller, and Melinda Selby. However, with many key players return- ing and coming off a fine J.V. season of 11-3, Mrs Murphy is looking forward to another winning season next year. Mrs. Murphy agrees that this season was one of the best in her coaching career and commented on the season We shared the ecstasy of winning and the agony of defeat, survived some good as well as difficult times, but always emerged a stronger and closer team The girls will always remember the Twelve Days of Christmas, the night of the 5 moons, the Smelly lec- tures, charades, fitting 13 in one scat, singing Alleluia to the Almighty, and, of course, Mrs. Murphy's in- famous One more time J.V. 1st row: Amy Bortman, Mary Shevock, Paula Kirkpatrick, Michele Lamb 2nd row: Alicia Nihart, Chris Darnell, Rose Warner 3rd row; Jennifer Eckenrode, Coach Barb Taylor, Sue McGowan Varsity 1st row: Kim Eckenrode. The team was led by two outstanding wrestlers — captains Kevin Smith and Dave Yahner. With his quick moves and great attitude, 1 19 pounder Smith finished the regular season with an 18-3-1 record. Dave continued the Yahner family's extraordinary tradi- tion of success on the CH mats by dominating every opponent and finishing with a perfect 21-0 record. Smith and Yahner were joined by Tim Sammarco in the District competition. First year wrestler, Edgar Link, and the other seniors — Craig McNulty, Craig Lieb, Bill Eckenrode, and Bill Bender — helped the team improve its performance as the season progressed. What the wrestlers will most likely remember after the season are the nervous jitters before a match, struggling to lose those extra few pounds before a match, taking a detour called J” street, beating Richland, Dave's undefeated record, dressing on the bus while going to Indiana, aerobics in preseason, staying in the hotel in J-town, Mr. Murphys saying: Sooner we get started, the sooner we get done! , the ref kicking Marion Center's coach out of the gym, watching Boots and Riz eliminate, Saturday practices, and pigging out after weigh-ins. 126 Craig Mi Nulty turns his man into a whcrlharrow GIRLS ALWAYS STRIVE FOR PERFECTION Mrs. Sandy Murphy and the CH girl's track team anticipated another ex- cellent year For the past four consecutive years the girls track team has had undefeated seasons and has been at the top of the Allegheny Mountain Con- ference In 1985 the tram also earned 1st place honors at all of their invitational meets with their biggest thrills coming when they beat Indiana and 1 I other schools at the Somerset Invitational and beat Altoona and 13 other schools at the Westmont Invitational. The girls finished a proud 3rd in District competition among a field of 27 schools, with many members placing in the top 6 of their events. Mrs Murphy was disappointed that in 1985 only 2 girls, Jennifer Shaffer in javelin and Laurie Bills in Triple Jump, qualified for the prestigious trip to states However, she and Ms Barbara Taylor, the assistant coach, are optimistic that many more members will qualify this season. 128 Success — Year In and Year Out The Boy’s Track Team did it again. For the fifth year in a row they had a winning season. By completing another winning season, this makes them the most successful boys’ team in the decade of the 80‘s. Team balance, hard work, and some outstanding individual performances were the key to this year's winning season. Seniors Kris Price, Ed Link, Kevin Smith, Brett Schreyer, and Mike Lamb; Juniors Ar- nold Caretti, Scott Price, Eric Yeckley, Jeff Pellas, Mark La- mont, and Jerry Miller were the returning veterans that had good seasons and contributed greatly to this year's success. There were many others that put forth a good honest effort, and made Cambria Heights Boys Track Team the most suc- cessful boy's team year in and year out. 130 BASEBALL RELOADS, NOT REBUILD Under the direction of Coach Bob Buck the baseball program never rebuilds; it just reloads. The team has won approximately two-thirds of its games over the last few years, annually challenging tor league honors. The 1986 team has more lettermen returning than in previous years. Leading the returning letter winners are Mark and Ken Stockley, Tim Sam- marco. Bo Polites, and Ed Yeager. Despite the loss of stand-out Don Presloid, the pitching staff has depth with quality arms like the Stockley brothers, Marc Let so. and Tom Enter. If the juniors and seniors perform up to capabilities, 1986 could be another winning season 132 7 arsity Highlander teams were winners in ’ 1985-86. Excluding the spring sports which are traditionally powerful, the girls and boys teams compiled a 69-21-2 mark, winning 77% of their regular contests. The football team rebounded from some down years to finish 5-3-2. Both the boys and girls basketball teams dominated their op- ponents. And the crowning achievement was the first ever state championship for Cambria Heights, won by the volleyball team. This athletic success brought out enthusiastic crowds to all the contests. The success was brought about to a large degree because of the fine athletic skills of a number of seniors such as Kris Price, Mike Lamb, Melinda Selby, Kim Eckenrode, Mark Stockley, Kevin Smith, Bo Polites, and others. The athletes and their teams have been a great source of pride for the Cambria Heights community.
