Though we journey to a distant shore. You'll remain our home forever more. Dear Cambria Heights, all hail. Dear Cambria Heights, all hail. In Memory of Debbie Stasko December brings sad memories Of a loved one who has gone to rest, She will never be forgotten By the ones who miss her most. Though her smile is gone forever And her sweet face we cannot touch, We shall never lose sweet memories Of the one we miss so much. We hold you in our dreams at night We call you in the dawn And yet we have to tell ourselves. That you are really gone. Often we listen for the footsteps Of the one we miss so dear. You are always in our hearts Wishing you were here. Brian fl Jlkrifkl mri SJ. J}am'i W. Ban tt Ibonna VI. BJt paJa VI BrnJrr 17 Stott p. These students are divided into morning and afternoon classes. Aside from classes at Cambria Heights, Vo-tech students learn one of the seventeen trades offered at Vo-tech. There are also clubs the students may participate in such as DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), HERO (Home Economics and Related Occupa- tions) and VIC.A (Vocational Industrial Club of America). Along with Cambria Heights there are eight other school districts that attend. They are Blacklick Valley, Bishop Car- roll, Conemaugh Valley, Central Cambria, Harmony, Northern Cambria, Penn Cam- bria, Portage. Although the seniors are anxious to graduate it won't be easy to say good- bye, but they will have their memories, new friends, teachers, bus rides, roaming the halls, and the many crackdowns by administration. Trivia Pursuers In the year when Trivia Pursuit swept the coun- try, the sixty members of the 1985 Highlander yearbook staff became the masters of C.H. informa- tion. The staff searched for both the important and minor events that make up a large part of what many students will remember about the 1984-85 school year. After meeting an early November deadline for col- or senior portraits then battling about the color and design of the yearbook cover, the staff worked evenings and free periods during December, January, and February to meet the early March deadline to complete the book. All of the hours spent collecting information, iden- tifying pictures, laying out sections, and typing led to the creation of the Highlander whose value will be determined in the future by how well it helps this year’s students to answer the question Do you remember. . .? ’ EDITORS — Michele Weaver. 'Tp he Cambria Heights Highlander Band started this past year's marching season with a trip to South Carolina and Florida. In South Carolina the band competed in the An- nual Sun Festival Parade. Then it was off to sunny Florida! There the band made ap- pearances at Epcot Center, Disney World and Circus World. Back home again the band began to practice for the Penn- sylvania State Legion Parade at Hershey, Pa. All the practicing paid off and the Highlander's were once again champions, making this the ninth con- secutive State Legion Championship. For football season the band perfomred The Sounds of the British Regiment. March of the Yellow Ribbon, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The excellent performance of these shows brought the crowds to their feet in standing ovation more than once. For the Annual Christmas Concert the band performed old favorites such as It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and Jingle Bells” along with the medleys; Christmas Moods and Christmas Medley and the classical “Hymn of Brother-Hood. For the Spring Concert the band performed Willie Nelson in Concert, Send in the Clowns, The Seventies, Big Band Classics and more. Things most remembered are initiations, practice, trips, and the satisfaction of a job well done. 89 Hoops and Flash Flags Kneeling Michele Weaver. Mane Kelly. Linda Bogus. Under the leadership of captain, Marie Kelly, routines were created, taught, and performed at parades, pep-rallies, and football games. This year hoops, and flash flags were added to the half-time shows for added flash and color. Also, the girls performed on the sidelines along with the cheerleaders to many popular tunes. Along with the hard work of being a majorette are the good times that all the girls will remember, such as: initia- tion, cake and scrapbooks for the football players, flowers for seniors, pep talks, the Senior Sign, the majorette van, and fireworks of the N.C. game. The theme, Up Where We Belong, was chosen by the Junior class officers. The prom decorating committee consisted of several hard-working Juniors who were able to transform the commons area into a dreamland. Their diligence paid off in the end, as many people commented it was one of the best proms our high school has seen in a long time. After lingering in a coma, Paul died the following week. The team then dedicated its season in memory of their teammate. The season itself brought disappointment. Injuries occurred to key players. Game situations turned against the Highlanders. Turn-overs and the inability to score haunted the team. In the Curwensville game alone the team had six turn-overs. After rallying furiously at Central Cambria, the offense could not put the ball in the end zone from the one yard line with less than a minute to go. Even penalties cost the team games as the win- ning touchdown, with six minutes to go against Portage, was called back for a clip. Still, the team was much better than its 1-9 record would in- dicate. The team almost upset league champion Ligonier Valley. Also, individual players had excellent years. Ken Strittmatter gained wide recognition for his defensive play leading the team with 95 tackles and 65 assists. Offensively, Mike Horvath rushed for 572 yards (7.2 avg.) and Ed Yeager ran for 581 yards (4.5 avg.). Jim Yeager caught 19 passes for 360 yards (18-9 avg.) and Eric Kirkpatrick caught 6 passes for 156 yards (26.0 avg.). 1« Row: Jerry Humphrey, John Zenone, Glenn Kirkpatrick, Joe Baran. Jim Bassett. Paul was not only a fellow football player and loyal teammate, but a very kind person to everyone and a perfect representative of our student body. We will remember him as being a dedicated worker whose efforts were always appreciated. But, most of all, we will remember Paul for his friendship . . . Paul's memory will linger forever .. . not only during football season, but throughout the years to come. May his love remain in our hearts as we allow this moral to reflect upon us: — Live each day to its fullest extent and be thankful for the peace we obtain now. — COACHES — Front Row: Bill Crowell,Jack Tinnick, Denny Pawlikowski Back Row: Bruce Frycklund, Rick Bishop. Senior Co-Captain Kimberly Glass 'Tp he girls' volleyball pro- gram is one of the most successful girls' sports pro- grams in our area. For three consecutive years the girls team has reached state title competi- tion, playing in the semi-final games two years in a row. Last year the girls were the first team to defeat defending state cham- pion, Norwin, in many years. This year the team was winning its semi-final championship game 14-5, but ended up with a heart-breaking loss, 14-16. Still, the girls finished their regular season undefeated. They won their conference by defeating Richland; then they captured the District 6 title for the third consecutive year. Some things the girls will always remember about this year are: the wave, beating Richland, winning districts, Fri- day practices, Schmov, and Let's Get Excited. 116 JUNIOR VARSITY — 1st Row: Christie Nagle. Highlander fans will remember the season for its excite- ment. frustrating losses, and the pro- mise of excellence in the future. At times the varsity had three sophomore starters — 6'4 Elmer Weaver, 6'5 Bill Marshall, and guard Mike Haluska. Weaver led the team in scoring, senior Kevin Kirk, a two year starter, provided leadership, scoring, and rebounding. Also, senior guard Brian Domalik played an important role. A number of the losses were par- ticularly exciting and frustrating because the Highlanders lost in the last few seconds. Even in the last game, a District 6 play off with powerful Hun- tingdon, the boys hung tough, losing only in the final minutes. With this year's experience, height, and athletic talent, the team could be a basketball power in the next two years. Despite the close defeats, the team experienced many memorable moments. Among these were Lovetron's MVP trophy, blessing the baskets with holy water, starting the season with two straight wins, the sup- port of the Pine Brothers, and the ex- cellence of the birthday choir. Mrs. Murphy was very pro- ud of the girls as she commented on their excellent first half (7-2). Coach Murphy admitted that the girls slid downhill a little at the end of the season, finishing the se- cond half at 4-5. The J.V. team also had an excellent season, losing only two games the whole year. Melinda Selby led the scoring with 433 points this season, averaging 21 points a game. Sue Miller had the highest percen- tage of shooting (44%) and was second in the rebound category to Melinda who averaged 13.8 rebounds per game. Bo An- na stole an average of 7.8 balls per game and led the team in assists with 5.4 per game. Jennifer Shaffer was second in assists with 4.1 per game. Ten girls lettered this year. They were, seniors: Bo Anna and Jennifer Shaffer. Juniors: Kim Eckenrode, Sue Miller, Melinda Selby, Lori Crowell, and Kim Cicero. Sophomores. Chris Goldian, Paula Yeckley, and Andrea Wholover. The girls will always remember singing Christmas carols. Kim and N.B., and always being late for practice (especially Carrolltown). ' 11 he beginning of the 1984-85 season was disap- pointing, but practice and dedication soon started to pay off. Varsity ended up with a 6-8 season. Captains Scott Murphy and Bill Yahner performed an outstanding year. Scott remained undefeated for the year with a 20-0 record. Bill Yahner was 19-3-1 before regionals, and was undefeated in dual meets. Seniors Ran- dy Cence and Ken Strittmatter are recognized for their accomplishments and outstanding effort and leadership. Kevin Smith remained undefeated in dual meets and Dave Yahner was undefeated all year with an 11-0 record. Scott Murphy and Dave Yahner both won at the Central Cambria and Lewistown Christmas tournaments. Four wrestlers advanced to districts: Scott Murphy, Bill Yahner, Matt Luther, and Dave Yahner. Bill Yahner placed 2nd in the 145 lb. weight class at districts; Dave Yahner placed 3rd in the 155 lb. weight class and both advanced to regionals. The J.V. had an outstanding year with a 7-1-1 winning record. The wrestlers will have many memories to look back upon with a smile. Some of thinking back will include the numerous matches that came down to the wire, the first win against Penn Cambria, the exciting five pins in a row against Johnstown Vo-Tech, all the long and sometimes quiet bus rides home, working for the fastest pin, strug- gling to lose those couple extra pounds, traveling to sec- tionals and going out to eat with the cheering section. Along with all these, the wrestlers will remember the disappointments of losing, the anxieties before their 5 matches, and the excitement of winning. Team Hopes to Repeat Championship The girls' track program at Cambria Heights is the envy of many area schools. The girls' track team has been undefeated four of the last five years. Despite losing key per- formers from last year's team like Mary Lantzy, Suzy Haluska, Ruth Bradley, and Debbie Boslet, with fourteen returning lettermen and twenty-six new freshmen to push the upperclassmen, the 85 member girls' track team should again be very competitive. The 1984 team won the conference title; the 1985 team hopes to repeat the feat. Individual performers who hope to achieve state level competition include Sue Miller, Melinda Selby, and possibly others. 128 Committed to Success ' p he 1985 C.H. boys track team continued the latest A tradition of winning seasons at Cambria Heights. The team competed against many strong teams including Central Cambria, Richland. Northern Cambria, Forest Hills and Penn Cambria. The team leadership was provided by seniors Chris Blum, Scott Murphy, and Jim Yeager. These three athletes had ex- cellent seasons, but a number of underclassmen also showed the dedication necessary to become a good track performer. Brett Schreyer, Rob Ropp, Kris Price, and Arnold Caretti all performed well in 1985. A number of other underclassmen realized that with hard work and commit- ment comes success. 130 131 Pitching The 1985 Highlander baseball team is dominated by underclassmen. Only five seniors return to lead coach Bob Buck's forces. Still, because of excellent, depth in the pitching staff that includes Don Presloid, Mark and Ken Stockley, and Mark Letso the team should be able to compete in their division. 132 Michael Zenone Michael Horvath John Berrin er Don Presloid 133 Eric Kirkpatrick rJ 134 Some Winning Moments Class Will We the members of 1985 graduating class of Cambria Heights, do generously bequeath our assorted talents, trinkets, assets, and mementos to deserving underclassmen Brian Albright To Tor. the ability to Hang Loose.
