Alicia Sasway, Teresa Fredo 13 SENIOR YEAR Senior year goes by so fast, Remembering great times with friends. While ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades seemed to last, I wished that twelfth grade would never end. Acting strange at football games And having fun at dances, Calling the teachers childish names And talcing lots of chances. Day dreaming in class about your latest beau And the bus ride home from school. Flunking three English tests right in a row And feeling like a fool. Graduation day comes around too fast. It's time to think of life in a new way, But never forget the great times in tne past During your high school days! — Pam Colberg Picture Identifications: 1. Cindy DeDea 2. Jeff Smith 3. On the afternoon of May 6, 1983 after months of planning and preparation, the class of '84 changed the high school commons into a magic land. Then after hectically decorating the commons, many members of the class rushed home to work magic on themselves, trans- forming themselves into beautiful, elegant, charming young men and women. Looking back on the dinner, dance, parties, and shared fantasies still brings a warm glow to those who shared this magical experience. V 48 Nineteen Eighty-Four 1984 is a year of ominous foreboding because of George Orwell's novel. In English classes this year we learned of a 1984 filled with Big Brother, telescreens, thought police, Newspeak. 2 minute hate, and slogans like War is Peace. Fortunately, our 1984 in reality is not Orwell's totalitarian, brain washing world. However, our 1984 has been filled with frightening insane realities that could belong to Orwell’s world. For example, a maniacal suicide terrorist driving a bomb laden truck on a cpiiet Sunday morning in Beirut. Lebanon, blew up himself and over 250 American marines who were trying to create peace. Also, the Russians madly shot down a Korean airliner, destroying 269 lives. We even watched the ultimate insanity as the world destroyed itself on television in a nuclear holocaust in “The Day After.’’ Finally, in the season of love and peace, Christmas, we observed adults become raging mobs as they battled for a few ugly dolls that supposedly came from a cab- bage patch. Locally, the events continued to be bleak. Economically, while the rest of the country seemed to revive with more people becoming employed and inflation being the lowest in 20 years, our area continued to suf- fer with high unemployment. Then a terrible mine explosion took the lives of three local men. including one of our fathers, and reminding us all that many of our fathers, brothers, and friends who are working con- tinually face grave danger. Still. long after the memor)' of Orwell’s 1984 and the bleak news events fade from our memories, we w ill remember the happier times of our senior year like Sally Ride becoming the first female astronaut. Michael Jackson electrifying us with his performances. Boy George amusing us. and three old ladies inquiring on a television commercial. “Where’s the beef?” Also, we will remember the little things that happened to us: Christine Anderson: When we were caught drinking by the cops at a school dance my sophomore year. The yearbook created a stir in the beginning of the year because a switch from colored senior portraits to black and white was being considered to save money. But the senior class voted overwhelmingly to keep their portraits in color and to pay more for the yearbook. Despite the three dollar increase in cost, the same number of copies as in 1983 were sold. For 1984 the staff tried some new design ideas. Most important are the divider page, headlines and table of contents lettered by Alicia Sasway. Also, some new lay-out material like newspaper headlines reviewing the year in sports are used. Finally, because of a late February deadline to complete the yearbook, material from the 1983 spring sports is used to reflect the expected performances in 1984. The success of the 1984 Highlander yearbook though will be determined in the years to come by the amount of pleasurable memory' it stirs as students from 1984 look back on their high school days. Elias, the 140 member Highlander Marching Band won its eighth consecutive State Legion championship for eight consecutive years, is unprecedented in state history and is the truest mark of the band's excellence. The band did not bask in its glory long though, because in August it began two week all day camp to begin preparation for the football half-time shows. This year the band presented two different shows — the Scottish Show”, which consisted of songs like “Bonnie Doon” and Scotland the Brave”, and the “Moorside Shows”, which provided smash hits like “Beat It, Eye of the Tiger,” and Almost Like a Song.” After football season the band prepared for its concert season. In the annual Christmas Concert, which a,is presented to a packed auditorium, the concert band played Christmas songs such as “Jingo Jango and Do You Hear What I Hear?” Then in the spring concert the band played such showy songs as Flashdance and Scottish Rhapsody.” Among the most memorable moments for the Cambria Heights band are the initiations, rainy practices, tryouts, and impatient parents who waited through some long practices. After the half-time performance at the N.C. game of their senior year, each majorette will look back at the empty field and know that she will seldom experience a feeling better than having performed for people. With editor Barb Noel determining assignments, the thirty staff members wrote detailed articles through the five issues of Plaid Talk that reflected the diversity of activities at the high school. Also to further enhance the school newspaper the staff incorporated more pictures and graphics into the lay-out. This marked the first 500 season for a Highlander football squad in five years. The twenty-one seniors on the squad were largely responsible for the success of the team. It was through their aggressive play and knowledgeable leadership on the field that helped the team to achieve some of the goals that were set prior to the season. The seniors will be missed by next year’s squads which learned a lot from their desire and positive attitude. 116 J_'he 1983 football season was filled with peaks and valleys. Featuring an aerial offense led by auarterback Paul Venesky who threw for 1001 yards and a stingy defense, led by Bill “Bumper Crowell, the 1983 Highlanders were the first football team in a number of years to have at least a .500 season. Among the high points of the team's season were the thrilling victories over long time enemies. Bishop Guilfoyle and Forest Hills. The deepest valley undoubtedly was the disheartening final game loss to arch-rival Northern Cambria. After one of the most spirited pep rallies in recent years on the afternoon of the big game, the team found out that key performers, Bill Crowell and Drew Thomas, could not play due to illness. The loss of Crowell and Thomas seemed to affect the team’s performances and concentration. A number of seniors earned post-season honors. Jeff Lieb received the Tribune Democrat Scholar-Athlete Award. Bill Crowell led the District for most fumble recoveries. Rob Berringer and Bill Farrell were selected to the Ken Lantzy All-Star squad. Finally, in addition to the ten games the football team will have many individual memories that include: running 30- 30's in the sizzling 90° heat, getting yelled at Sunday nights while watching game films, hearing the coaches say Last hard work day,” and playing in the mud then writing an apology to the janitors for the mess. Throughout the season, statistics were kept on each girl in a number of categories. The top girl in each category is as follows: Suzy Haluska with 82 assists: Michele Selestok with 100 steals: Man Lantzy with 38-59 (64% I foul shots and top scorer with 338 points; and Melinda Selby with 194 rebounds. Mary Lantzy. Melinda Selby, and Suzy Hafuska each earned special honors. Mary became the first girl to score 1000 career points at C.H. and was voted to the number one Central Western All-Tourney Team. Melinda was voted to the number two team and Suzy Haluska honorable mention for the team. The Junior Varsity, under the coaching of Miss Barbara Taylor, completed their season with a record of 5 wins and 13 loses. When asked for her comment on the season. Coach Murphy said It has been a very interesting and unforgettable season for everyone. Some memorable times the girls will never forget are basketball camp and bird watching and the bus ride home when no one could seem to keep their pants on. Seniors Lead Grapplers to Winning Season A. the start of the 1983-84 season the prospects of having a winning season looked bleak. Of the numerous returning lettermen, only one had produced a winning record, and that was only (14-13-1) the total overall total won-loss record of the wrestlers returning from the previous season was only 69-137-2. But through the hard work and dedication of the team, combined with the leadership of the seven seniors, the Heights put together a fine 8-4-1 season. Coaches Rick Yerza and Harry Murphy were pleased with the success of the 83-84 squad and hope that the graduating seniors will treasure some of the many pleasant experiences they have had in their years at CH. Among the most memorable experiences the wrestlers had are: The show they got at United. The doggie bag a few people filled full of custard at the Wrangler for take-out. Scott's little incident in the rubber room with the citrus fruit. Listening to their good buddy “Ed” going to away matches, playing a little game in the back of the bus coming home from Central, Coach Murphy’s drills and Coach Terza's practical jokes, Saturday practices in the rubber room when someone yells “Is anyone alive in there, Coach Murphy’s sayings; I’m in your chair and I like it there, and “the sooner we start wrestling the sooner we can get out of here,’’ and when Coach Terza tried to get some venison out of season when coming home from Moshannon Valley. With only Chris Gobris returning from the excellent 1983 varsity team, the 1984 boys’ basketball team was very lacking in experience. This inexperience was a major factor in the team winning only one game. Despite the poor record. Coach Frycklund has stated that the team continued to maintain a positive attitude, practicing and playing with intensity throughout the season. For the team members the 1984 season was memorable for a variety of reasons including: the abolishing of 17’s, Price's density, Kirk’s unrechargeable battery, Holtz’s modesty, the 1 game winning streak at Vo-tech with Gobris scoring 42 points, Whitey’s aggressive play, relaxing in tne sauna after a rough one, Kirk’s KO in the Richland game causing the benches to empty, and Coach Frycklund’s 3 technical's in the Central Cambria game getting him thrown out. Among the various experiences the girls will remember are Karen’s car, Denny's hard workouts, going to the first tournament with no volleyballs, making friends from other schools, working as a team — not as a single person, and the feeling of being a winner. 131 Cathy Miller MANAGERS - Helen Kovach. Still, with some good pitching returning, particularly Don Presloid and )eff Shaffer, and some eager underclassmen, the Highlander baseball team could be very competitive as the year progresses. 135 Track Men Hope to Repeat Fine Season l lith nine lettermen returning from a fine 7-5 1983 season, the 1984 Boy’s Track Team plans on another successful season. The highlander Trackmen should be led by Jeff Lieb and Paul Venesky, both of whom advanced to district competition because of their 1983 performances. The 1984 schedule includes Central Cambria, Penn Cambria. Northern Cambria. Bishop Carrol, Bishop McCort, United, Forest Hills, Richland, Johnstown Vo-tech. Diane Maines. and Mary Lantzy who were all members of the 400 meter relay team. Ruth Bradley placed third in shotput and Suzy Haluska placed fourth in javelin. Finally. Mary Lantzy put on an incredible performance taking first in the high jump, long jump, and high hurdles Mary went on to place sixth in state competition Coach Murphy commented that being classified Triple A didn't seem to thwart, but rather increase the girls' desire and determination to prove to others as well as themselves that they were capable of competition with any girl on a one to one basis ' With a change back to Double A from Triple A and the loss of only 12 seniors from 1963. the 1984 girls' track team is expecting another excellent season 138 Ellen Link Beth Stoltz Suzy Haluska Barb Noel Diane Maines Cheryl Snyder Ruth Bradley Mary Lantzy ■eWe pos' Seoso VAono 1 Ae ° e lB 9 c .Pl 4 tnov 9' rS P°s' ab'°,C Sk SUPCT sj c ° «, Ctv) n 5-S — to Cto h«« ' J. ..
