Millette Weakland A PORTRAIT OF OUR YEAR M a portrait were drawn of the year from September 1982 to May 1983 it would have to be draped in black because so many of the happenings were tragic For example. Our faith in the American way of distributing and consuming products was shaken to the core when seven people died in Chicago from using cyanide laced Tylenol We had to wonder that if even our medicine could be poisoned by a madman, could any product be safe? Another tragedy that touched millions of lives was the effects of the economic recession depression. Our area led the nation in unemployment We witnessed huge lines of people waiting to get free food, and we ourselves organized a food bank in the school to help the many needy families in our area We also saw long lines form when an employer announced that there might be a few openings. After seeing all of the able bodied people who desperately want work lining up for just a few jobs, we had to ask ourselves what chance we had to find a job after graduation Maybe because the future looked so bleak, we studied and worked harder in school this year to help our chance for success. Through the dark clouds, though, some slivers of sun peeked through Our spirits were buoyed by one of the warmest winters in memory We witnessed the implanting of the first mechanical heart We also were introduced to the wonder of computers as they became more common m the school After meeting the computers, we knew that these machines would play a vital role in many of our future occupations Finally, we were inspired by an extra-terrestrial alien E T who showed us the magic of love and that home is where the heart is. Still, when we look back on this year, we will not dwell on the sad or sunny times, but rather, we will remember Brenda Albright: All the fun times I had with Dana. Coach Tirwick's Comments: With twelve returning lettermen filling some key positions, the 1982 Highlander football season appeared to be bright. After the disappointing 25-8 setback at the hands of Bishop Guilfoyle the Highlanders came back to win the next three games. The last half of the season was not so successful. Suffering the loss of some key personnel due to injuries, the Highlanders dropped their last six games in a row to finish the season 3-7. Although the team experienced a losing season, all was not lost as the Highlanders played some exciting and inspired football; No one will ever forget their stunning 15-14 upset win over Bishop McCort. With ten return- ing lettermen the Highlanders hope to improve and have a winning team next year. LETTERMEN — 1st Row: Ray Yeckley. Vince Sneath, John McMurray. Bill Frank. Ron McGowan. When asked for her comment, Mrs. Murphy said, “We have lost no one and will return, stronger than ever, to victory next year.” Girls who compiled fine statistics for the year are: Mary Lantzy, with 82-188 (62%) foul shots and 328 points, Suzy Haluska with 65 assists; Michele Selestok with 78 steals; and Melinda Selby with 202 rebounds and 69-122, (56%) jumpballs. Special honors were earned by Mary Lantzy, who was voted by the other coaches in the team's league to the number one Central Western All-Tourney Team and also, by Suzy Haluska and Melinda Selby for honorable men- tion by the coaches. This year’s lettermen are Suzy Haluska, Michele Selestok, Mary Lantzy, Bo Anna, Sue Miller, and Melinda Selby. The junior varsity team, coached by Miss Barbara Taylor, ended the season with a 5-13 record. Some of the times the girls will never forget TRI-CAPTAINS — Michele Selestok. The Girl's Volleyball team returns this year with very strong hopes of being District Six Champs, after a disappointing second place finish last year. With a large turnout of 54 girls, the coaches faced the tough job of cutting down to only the top 20. Those girls who did not make the squad this year should become key performers in next year’s squad. Some fond memories the girls had this season are winning first place in the Central Cambria Tournament, Jenny getting hit in the head by Kim's serve, riding in Karen’s car, and Sharon’s tough workouts. There are approximately 72 girls out for track and even though the team will compete Triple A level with other schools this year, the girls and coaches are very optimistic about the 1983 season. The team is comprised of 15 seniors. 18 juniors. 11 sophomores, and 28 freshmen. Last year’s team graduated 22 lettermen. and with only 13 returning. Coaches Murphy and Gooderham feel the team is basically young and inexperienced and that they will have to spend a great deal of time rebuilding for the upcoming season. However, they do believe they have the ‘‘talent. but because of the large number of girls and the time in- volved. it will require a great deal more effort on their part Even though this may be an obstacle, with the girls' enthusiasm and willingness to work, a successful season is inevitable. The coaches would like to recognize Mary Lantzy for placing 7th in State in the high jumps last year as a sophomore and ex- pect her to do even better this year, not only in high, but broad and triple jumps. Returning is a prom- ising group of young hurdlers and consistent field event men at the javelin, shot put, and discus. Lack of experience and speed should hamper the Highlanders in the sprints. Distance running has been a strong point for CH the last couple of years, and could continue if some of the veteran runners come through. A usual tough schedule against many of the area's strongest teams makes wins extremely hard to come by, but individual improvement will also be looked upon as success. 110 Bill Frederick 111 Jim Panaro Mike Rizzo Rich Snyder Experience and Enthusiasm LETTERMEN — 1st Row: Jim Blake. The Highlander baseball team should be highly competitive in 1983. With eight returning let- termen the team has the experience and en- thusiasm to be a winner. For many of the staff the techniques of creating a yearbook — doing layout, cropping pictures, choosing headline styles, writing copy — were new so that much had to be learned. Also, with a March 1 deadline, the staff had to work feverishly to complete their assignments. A few of the guidelines the staff follows in creating the yearbook include — trying to recreate the special moments and memories of the school year through pictures and words, using an interesting style in presenting the material, being accurate in the reporting and pictures, and including as many different students as possible in the yearbook. The fact that 56% of the student body purchased a yearbook indicates that a large number of students are looking forward to seeing the efforts of the yearbook staff. If hard work leads to success, then the 1983 Highlander staff should have succeeded in creating a yearbook to treasure. After weeks of practice and hours of work- ing on the set, lights and costume, the cast and crew for the play were ready for curtain time on March 24 and 25. Money-hungry Mr. Morlock will not let his daughter, Mary, become engaged to Joe Lacconi because Joe’s papa is poor. The feud begins when Joe's papa Luigi pleads his son’s case. A fight begins during the confrontation, and Luigi dies. Luigi, however, gets permission to return back to earth and haunts Morlock until he gives permission for the wedding. Luigi becomes visible only to Morlock. Morlock can’t eat or sleep and in despair he accidentally takes too many sleeping pills and he too dies. Morlock, however, won’t leave this life until things are settled, and Luigi cannot rest in peace until Mary and Joe are married. Since Lucifer happens to be in the neighborhood, he decides to personally escort Morlock to the lower regions. Morlock realizes that he has only been concerned with making money and has never had time for his family. If only he had another chance — then Mildred the maid, awakens him. It has all been a bad dream. A reformed Mr. Morlock happily gives permission for the wedding. 119 William Gormish and Debbie Yablinsky STAGE CREW — Joe Wilt. Overall the team placed 2nd in Prose and Boy’s Extemp, and 3rd in Drama. On February 18 the team traveled to Westmont again for one last try before Districts. Bill Pellas won a 2nd place ribbon in Boy’s Extemp, and Boy’s Ex- temp. placed 2nd as a team. Finally, on February 24, two members from each category traveled to St. Francis College for the first of two district meets. Tor Gabrielson from Drama and Cooleen Mihalow from Persuasive advanced to the second meet. This year’s team will best remember missing a rib- bon by one point, having Mr. Gormish accept the rib- bons for some of the teammates, waiting an hour for the bus at Westmont, and the fun on bus rides from every meet. 126 POETRY — Pam lllig. Then, with Mrs. Sowalla's departure in January. Mrs. Sandy Murphy became the advisor. One of the most memorable experiences of the year was the basketball pep rally when the sound system died and the band couldn’t be present. Trying to psyche the students when no one could hear was a challenge. Other interesting memories include: summer camp, cold foot- ball games, the sign ripping before the guys ran through, being late for the Alma Mater, pep rallies, last minute practices, expec- ting eleven girls and only seven showing up. discovering K.B.. crazy times in the locker room. “Pass the soap. At any basketball game, Section I is a force to be reckoned with. With their fanatical cheering, they are the spirit behind the boys basketball team, urging the guys on to victory. This year Section I, under the leader- ship of Brian Maykovich and Tom Chernisky and with organizational help from Randy Choby and Frank Cam- marata, increased in membership. The group pur- chased T-shirts, painter hats, shakers, megs, and membership cards. Section I also provided the halftime entertainment with 3 contestants attempting two free throws and a mid-court shot. Buttons and pizzas were awarded as well as the GE AM FM stereo cassette recorder, which went to Joe Vescovi who connected from mid-court at the Central Cambria game. The library is a quiet retreat apart from the bustl- ing crowds and noise of C.H.’s halls. It is a place where a student or faculty member can enjoy peace and have the opportunity to read. Helping Mrs. Betsy Wasilko keep this spot a lit- tle bit of heaven are her angels — the library aides. They toil silently and effi- ciently during their free periods behind the desk helping to check library materials in and out. Also, some of the girls take responsibility for creating bulletin boards to attract students to read. Without the aides the library would be a little less heavenly. They began their marching season as they traveled to Nashville. Tennessee, and performed in concert at Opryland. U S A., and attended the Grand OI‘ Opry. In July the band competed in the Pennsylvania American Legion State Championships where they captured the first place crown for the seventh consecutive year As they journeyed home, they stopped at Hershey Park for a day of enjoyment. After local parades were over the band began their annual August camp. During football season, shows such as the Robert E. Lee and the Show Business received standing ovations throughout the season The band finished the year with Christmas and Spring concerts. The Christmas concert contained hits like Christmas Recollections” and Jingle-Bell Rock while Arthur's Theme. Sinatra in Concert and The Doobie Brothers were among the Spring songs. Under the leadership of captain Lori Lawrence the girls made up and performed snappy routines at parades and football games. During the winter months when the concert season approaches, the girls lay down their batons and replace them with instruments. Combined with the hard work are a lot of good times and fond memories shared throughout the years. The majorettes will all remember flowers, scrapbooks, cakes, camping at Glendale and, oh, the fights, but after all the arguing came special friendships, tears and understanding. 138 Performers FLAGS — Kneeling.
