We Will Remember Evening newscasts and morning newspapers from September 1981 to May 1982 were filled with distressing news. Foremost were the troubling economic reports. These news reports became the substance of our POD and economics class discussions as we struggled to understand the meaning of high unemploy- ment. high interest rates, government cutbacks. Reagonomics. recession, and even depression. These classroom discussions became bitterly relevant when a few of our classmates had to leave school in late winter to enter college early in order to maintain their Social Security income. Also, countries like El Salvador. Guatemala, and Poland seemed like ominous shadows over our security as some of us thought about the draft and military enlistment. Even the winter weather seemed particularly bitter. Record low temperatures were recorded, and we were plagued by ice and snow. Yet. when we look back at our high school days, rather than remembering the distressful local, national, and international events or even the hectic demands of daily class work, what we will most likely remember (besides our bouts with Pac-Man and the Space Invaders) will be: Cathy Abel: Skipping Mrs. Kolony's study halls and getting caught Frank Abel: The day the Little House burnt down Amy Adams: Being part of a Championship Band Eric Albright: The time I told Mike McConnell to smell his peas, and pushed his face into them and split his lip Charles Anna: When Brian ripped off Elroy's shorts in Phys.
