Hthe IGHLANDER Volume XXII June 1, 1982 We Will Remember Evening newscasts and morning newspapers from September 1981 to May 1982 were filled with distressing news. Foremost were the troubling economic reports. These news reports became the substance of our POD and economics class discussions as we struggled to understand the meaning of high unemploy- ment. high interest rates, government cutbacks. Reagonomics. recession, and even depression. These classroom discussions became bitterly relevant when a few of our classmates had to leave school in late winter to enter college early in order to maintain their Social Security income. Also, countries like El Salvador. Guatemala, and Poland seemed like ominous shadows over our security as some of us thought about the draft and military enlistment. Even the winter weather seemed particularly bitter. Record low temperatures were recorded, and we were plagued by ice and snow. Yet. when we look back at our high school days, rather than remembering the distressful local, national, and international events or even the hectic demands of daily class work, what we will most likely remember (besides our bouts with Pac-Man and the Space Invaders) will be: Cathy Abel: Skipping Mrs. Kolony's study halls and getting caught Frank Abel: The day the Little House burnt down Amy Adams: Being part of a Championship Band Eric Albright: The time I told Mike McConnell to smell his peas, and pushed his face into them and split his lip Charles Anna: When Brian ripped off Elroy's shorts in Phys. For many of you graduation will be your last contact with formal education. Even though in later life you seek more education and training, it will be to the local high school that you will return. Your high school days are sort of a social cement holding you and the community together through a common loyalty, image, and pride. Your high school will never be replaced by other institutions, and there will always be a bond between you, the school and the community. Cambria Heights has become the avenue of social mobility for the ma- jority of your class. It is also the place where you meet young people of different backgrounds from different towns and a place where you learned to mingle and accept and respect differences, to establish links of communication and understanding. Congratulations Class of 1982. Dear Seniors: New opportunities will be present in your future. Life is filled with challenges. Don’t be afraid of failure. If you never try, you’ll never succeed. In every challenge, grasp the opportunity. Keep your mind open, ready and clear. Dream big and then work to fulfill your dreams. Opportunities usually come in unexpected places. The crisis and adversities in life must be met without fear. With this spirit in mind, you will be better able to seize the oppor- tunities and do something about them. Hopefully you will meet your challenges and take advantage of your opportunities and have a happy and successful future. Remembering the fun and laughter, The problems and the fears, And watching all our memories grow Throughout our high school years. The memories of the dances And the new friends that we’ve met, Vacations, teachers, talking And exams we’d rather forget. Yes, high school days are precious but brief, Where all your dreams come true; It is not the end, but the beginning Of a life we'll start anew. JoyShefstad, 16 Bowbells, N. Three new coaches came in and tried their hardest to give the Highlanders a winning season. Coach John Tinnick worked with the offensive unit while Coach Dan Bilko and Coach Bill Crowell worked with the defensive unit. Although they did their darndest. the Highlanders ended their season with a 1-8-1 record. Many of those defeats came as a result of bad breaks The ball didn’t want to bounce in the CH direc- 'ion; instead it hopped, skipped, and jumped Into the opponents’ hands. Lady Luck just wasn’t on CH’s side. Whenever C.H. had the lead, the ball always seemed to frown upon us. If it wasn’t jumping around, It would sail across the punter’s head. The season was a year of bad breaks With the bad breaks, many people wondered how the players managed to keep their pride, game after game That question can easily be answered. Highlander fans and school spirit boosted the team's morale. In this morale individual talents flourished. Run- ning back. Brian Kopera, rushed for over 1,000 yards this season. Team captain. Joe Noel, received the Tribute Democrat Scholar-Athlete award. Although some games went rather badly, practices always seemed to be enjoyable. The team’s “NIMROD” games broke up some of the monotonous routines that practices can bring on. After “NIMRODS’’ got monotonous a little football dance to the band's music kept many players amused for minutes. As a last resort, doing Pete Rose slides through mud puddles kept a smile in many player’s faces. These among other things will be long remembered. 92 «M Coach : Left to Right: Tom Link, Dan Bilko, Jack Tinnick, Bill Crowell and Bruce Frycklund. Coaches’ comment: The 1981 Highlander football season opened with a new look featuring a completely new coaching staff. The team won their first game 12-7 against Somerset; however, they lost eight of the remaining nine games tying only Penn Cambria 6-6. Although the team played some outstan- ding football most of the games, underclassmen gained valuable ex- perience. Coaches and players are optimistic about the 1982 season and are preparing for it at the present time. 97 Big Mac attack! HOLOCAUST RELIVED! Girls Break Even The girl’s varsity basketball team ended their season with an even 9-9 record. The J.V. team closed their season with an 8-10 record. Top scorer for the year was Mary Lantzy with 257 points while Tish Keefe pulled down 366 rebounds breaking the previous record of 316 which she also held. Team honors this year went to Tish Keefe, Mary Lantzy, and Ginny Toseki for honorable mention in District 6 competition. Also Ginny Toseki and Tish Keefe were awarded basketball scholarships at Mount Aloysious Jr. College. When asked for her comments, Coach Sandra Murphy said she would miss the seniors, and the talent and the height they gave the team. She also stated that she felt the underclassmen have a lot to offer the team next year. Moments the girls will always remember include Ginny's little escapade against Forest Hills, Barb Noel’s favorite shorts coming untied, Tish shooting a basketball from her knees, Michele getting more than piz- za, and getting stuck on the wrong side of the road on a four lane highway. The Lone Cager 101 Making the Play-Offs The 1981-82 season proved to be a successful year for the Highlanders basketball team. They ended their season with a 13-9 record which has been the best record for C.H. since 1976. It was also the first time since ’76 that they were eligible for the playoffs. This year’s team was never beaten by more than ten points by an opponent. They won the annual Vo-Tech Christmas Tournament crown, plus beat arch-rivals Richland and Northern Cambria both times. Basketball is a team sport that allows individual talents to shine. John Polites and Jody McMullen led the team with highest points; also. John Polites made the Tri- County All Star team and was selected the MVP of the Vo- Tech Christmas tournament As the team ended their season, they took with them many memories — Like coach Fryklund yelling “ 17” or line up. or possibly even on the line , Why did Ray Yeckley always say Guzsh? We think they had a very successful season. Some fond memories are Suzy and Jennifer's togetherness on the court. Mini's acrobatic spike, the battle of the radios. Barb’s milk bath. The girls’ primary goal was an undefeated season. With this goal, the team members spent hours lifting weights, jump- ing rope, running the bleachers, doing whistle sprints and working their hardest to be the best in their event. The championship season began in May of 1981 when the band, under the direction of John R. Elias, traveled to the Blossom Festival in Niagara Falls. Ontario. In competition with 30 other bands, the Highlanders won the first place trophy and international recognition as the best. Then, in July the band competed in the Pennsylvania American Legion parade in Pittsburgh. For the sixth consecutive year the group captured first place honors, a feat unmatched by any band in this competition. After the street marching, the band moved into its August camp to prepare for the football season. With such shows as the ‘‘Battle Hymn Show and the Big Band Show . The Highlanders consistently received standing ovations. When the snow covered up the mud and ended the daily after school drills of football season, the band moved indoors to prepare for its annual concert season highlighted by the Christmas and Spring concerts. Because of its year round practicing, the Highlander Band reamins a continuing source of pride for the Cambria Heights community. Row Seven: Earl Crowell. Jim Ertter. Cheryl Anna. Tammy Sponsky. There are no applause, honors, trophies, trips, or curtain calls for the Highlander staff but rather only tedious hours of plan- ning, writing, cropping, and typing. Still each staff member has the unique satisfaction of both seeing his her work etched in ink for a lifetime and knowing that without his her effort many special times would be forgotten. The 1982 Highlander was particularly challenging to complete. First, at the beginning of school the seniors voted to have their portraits appear in color to add a new, exciting look to the book. Then, because the staff worked primarily on Saturday mornings, the work was put way behind schedule because meetings had to be cancelled for three consecutive Saturdays in January due to bad weather. Still, each staffer hustled through the month of February to complete each special assignment so that the book could meet its early March deadline. When the years pass members of the Highlander staff may remember the early Saturday morning phone calls bringing news of a meeting’s cancellation, the debate over the choice of covers, learning the techniques of plan- ning and cropping, signing out of free centers to work, being worried about meeting the deadline, and par- ticularly the thrill of putting it all together. Despite three cancelled trips due to bitter cold and snow, the club enjoyed six regular trips to Blue Knob plus a bonus March Sunday of skiing. After a year’s absence from the Cambria Heights social scene, the Ski Club was re- juvenated by the return of ad- visors, Harry and Sandy Murphy. The skiers have Mr. and Mrs. Murphy to thank for the great fun of long bus rides, terrible wipe- outs, tremendous (-50 degrees wind chill) cold, Sunday morning bruises that came from creating a path through the woods on Mombo, mad dashes to the rental, freezing lift rides, and the exhileriating thrill from one last run down Bunny Hop at 9:45. Gary Laurito and Linda Bearer of the Art Department created the new insignia. Thirty-four members worked under the supervision of Advisor. Mr. Dennis Anna. Editor-in-chief John Kopera was aided by assistant Mark Weakland and sports editor Tom Chernisky. With determined reporters. Plaid Talk was able to put out eight interesting editions. Members will long remember the worry of writing articles to meet the deadline, plus making sure that every name is spelled correctly. The typists had the hassle of finding time to type mountains of copy. Also. Tom Chernisky’s famous sports quizzes gave the paper a uniqueness. Editors in particular spent long hours proofreading articles. Although most articles to be proofread were short, some staff members such as Bill Pellas always had an article or story that could easily have been made into a novel. Putting the paper together was the greatest chore, particularly the time it was put together at a gas station while Tom Chernisky swatted flies and let them drop on the paper as the Beatles’ Revolution No. 9 played for the hundredth time. Finally, every Plaid Talk staffer can hear a worried Mr. Anna saying his six famous words — How’s it coming along so far?’’ Typists: Molly Donahue Tamra Weber Michele Spacht 133 Preparing for the Future Sitting: Vice-President — Zena Weber. The club is opened to any student who has taken two or more business courses. Under the direction of Mrs. Karen Conrad, the organization has been very active. Members have formed a secretarial pool with juniors and seniors. The members type duplicating handouts and other classroom materials. The club also held a hoagie and pizza sale that will enable them to use their money for a spring field trip. This year the chapter also made Christmas cards for the teachers. Each year the FBLA attends two regional con- ferences at surrounding high schools. At the spring conference, the members compete in various business subjects. Any member who qualified will compete at the State Leadership Conference in Lancaster during May. Left to Right, Row 1: Advisor Mrs. Conrad. Jill Hambley. Chris Baker. Beth Solomon. Tammy Sneath. During the last home football game, FHA members released 800 red and blue balloons in dedication to the graduating seniors. As a service project, the chapter held a play hour for preschool children in our communities. Members also participated in an initiation ceremony in December and the FHA state leadership con- ference in Lancaster in March. Mini projects for the year included making and distributing fortune cookies to the teachers during FHA week and mak- ing costumes for the school play. Also during the year, Pam Short brought recognition to our school by serving as a state officer for western PA. 1981-82 was the second year for our young chapter. It was a year of candle-lighting, flowers, ham sandwiches, breathing helium, halloween costumes, the rainbow, and Lancaster. All members showed enthusiasm throughout the year in fulfilling the state FHA theme “Youth Potential — Energy Unlimited.” 136 137 Six Senior Captains Varsity: Kneeling: Patty Sibert, Theresa Phillips, Julie Kirkpatrick. The girls attending were Eva Dranchak. Suzie Bunier, Julie Kirkpatrick, and Theresa Phillips. These girls brought back with them new routines and a new style of cheering to add to the squad’s changes. The final added attraction was the selling of stickers during the football season to raise money to purchase new pom poms and nikes. Another dif- ference this year was the decision to split into two squads for away games — A wrestling squad and a basketball squad. These girls will be able to look back at cheerleading and have the satisfaction of knowing that they improved cheerleading a little by making changes. The girls will cherish memories of the freezing cold football games. Pep rally story. “Uptown’’, stealing spoons at P.S.U.. The Air Force ROTC unit at Cambria Heights started their new year with good news from Headquarters. The cadets were informed that they were selected as a Meritorious Unit for the fourth consecutive year. Selec- tion is based on competition with the 275 other units in the program throughout the country and means that the Cambria Heights unit is in the top 20% of organiza- tions in the program. Mike McConnell and Scott Hite were selected as Commander and Deputy Commander of the organiza- tion for the academic year and have as their respon- sibility the steering of the corps towards high goals. Some of the activities the cadets participated in this year included parades, a military wedding, Patriotism Day at the elementary schools which entailed the ROTC band playing the National Anthem for the flag raising, and patriotic readings, participating with verteran’s groups at Veteran’s Day activities, a military dinner for the cadets and their guests called a Dining-Out, drill team competition, trips to Ohio and Pittsburg to learn first hand about the Air Force and to receive flights on defense aircraft, military ball, model rocket and airplane flight demonstrations, daily flag raising and lowering ceremonies at the high school, leading the student body in the pledge, and a formal dinner called a Dining-In. Rick Paige was the first cadet in the history of the corps to receive ROTC Pilot’s wings after he had suc- cessfully learned to fly as a private pilot. Members of the drill team had their uniforms adorned for the first time with red shoulder cords signifying their acceptance into the elite squad. Members of the corps were hopeful that Scott Hite would receive his nomination to the Air Force Academy — The first cadet to be so honored. Also, the cadets participated in three national con- tests: Voice of Democracy, Valley Forge Freedom’s Foundation Contest, and Aerospace Education Foun- dation Contest. Michele McMoy reached the regional competition in the Voice of Democracy Contest. M A S H. opened with a dress rehearsal for the Middle School students on Wednes- day. March 31st. The directors. Mr. Gormish and Mrs. Yablinsky. expanded this year’s production into two days on Thursday. April 1st and Friday. April 2nd. M A S H stands for Mobile Ambulance Surgical Hospital; however the seriousness of this title is only a facade for the insane antics of the surgeons and nurses of the 4077th. The play is a short history of the person- nel of the hospital unit situated one mile from the 38th parallel during the Korean War. The plot centers on the attempts of the swampmen to get a young Korean to medical school back in the States. Heading the attempt to educate the boy are the head ‘■nuts’’ of this mobile nut house — Hawkeye Pierce and Kuke Forrest. M A S H includes laughter, romance, a few dramatic moments, and a genuine love of life. Left to Right. Sharon Holtz (Prompter). Ron Holtz, Mrs. Debbie Yablinsky. Mike McConnell. Mr. Gormish.
