Being the first in any time means carrying a unique burden because each decade yearns to define itself. Whether the eighties will be happy days like the fifties, or revolutionary and explosive like the sixties, or laid-back like the seventies will depend greatly on how we help to shape them. The world we are about to enter has changed radically from the beginning of our senior year to this spring. We have seen Americans taken hostage in Iran and held endlessly while America is mocked nightly on the media. We, men and women, are faced with the probability of the draft again as part of a re- emphasized building of our country's military might to face new threats posed by the Soviet Union. Also, economically we now face many uncertainties. Gas prices and all energy costs have increased drasti- cally. Unemployment is high; inflation is at 18%. Still, this senior year seems like an eye in a hurricane — tranquil. We have been thrilled with the specta- cle of sport as the Pirates and Steelers won world championships and the valiant U.S. hockey team took the gold. We have enjoyed the anticipation of college, careers, all the plans for the future. We have stud- ied, partied, met deadlines, and matured. Somehow, despite knowing we are going into the hurricane, we look forward to graduation. Perhaps a part of our optimism is based on the greatness of this senior year. Hopefully, this book will capture the essence of one of the best years of our lives. And this optimism growing from our senior year may help to set the tone for the eighties. Thank you Janie, for making my days seem brighter. I now look forward for tomorrow to come, So I can live and enjoy the process of doing it. I enjoy it by acknowledging everything and every one that plays a part in my life. Thanks again Janie. I’ll be seeing you soon, Just like I used to. A.F.A. Rita J. Panaro With Love We Remember... Janie Janie... I love you. I miss you. I wish you were here. The night you so urgently left us I didn't know. Fast asleep in my bed was I, How could I have known? Saturday I awoke to start off my ordinary day, Little did I know it was going to start this way. The shock I felt when I heard the tragic news, Swept over me, but I could not believe it happened to you. How could you leave us Without saying good-bye? Or didn’t I hear you When you really did try? You were so many things to me: A cheery face, a party partner, A band buddy, a school mate; But most of all a dear close friend. It made me angry to think that you could possibly be dead. How could He take you away when your Life wasn’t ready to end? Was it ready to end Janie? Did you try to tell me before? Was I too stupid to hear you? Why didn’t you try a little bit more? If you did try with all your might, I'm terribly sorry I could not comprehend. Maybe I did hear all that you said. But I was too afraid to face the approaching death of a close friend. At first, I could not accept your death, Couldn’t I or wouldn't I accept it? It did not seem fair for you to go away And leave us here only to hope and pray. That people will learn from what you have done To cherish the friendship of the ones we love. I realize now that there is one thing in life I cannot do without; The one thing that so many people must learn to do. To not take our friends for granted because when they are gone it is too late To love them and tell them how we feel. Congratulations to the Class of ’80 Dr. Russell DeFrahn, Superintendent For many of the Class of 1980 formal education will end in May. We know that you will accept the responsibility for shaping the thought of tomorrow with humility and courage. We also hope that a happy and prosperous future awaits all of you. I extend to you best wishes for success in future endeavors. The problems you face in the fast changing world of today may appear as impossible crises. Our coun- try is more unified with a new patriotism because we as Americans will conquer the crises of our times with the courage and conviction that we are able to improve our world. The destiny of our nation is the responsibility of all the people. Possibilities are everywhere for you if you are willing to release your energy and strength to solve today’s problems and reach out for greater achievements tomorrow. Your actions, as an individual citizen, do matter. Donald T Resko, Principal School Board Seated Mr Patrick Sheehan — Board Secretary. Mrs Pat Kelly, Mrs Regina Klaswick — President. Elias, have all of that plus a lot more. The best proof of the Highlander band’s greatness is that they like the Steelers, have now won four Super Bowls — state legion band championships. In fact, the seniors in the band have never been defeated Also, like the Steelers. the band's motto is strive for five ! The 79-80 marching band began in May of 79 when the band journeyed to Myrtle Beach. S.C. and placed second among some of the best bands in the U S. Then it was on to Disney World. Orlando. Florida, where the band highlighted a parade on Main Street USA With the springtime opening the marching season, the band then participated in many local parades. This led up to the PA State Ameri- can Legion Parade where the group placed first once again, making it their fourth consecutive win. As the street marching season came to a close, football season began. This meant many long, hot hours in the sun during band camp preparing halftime shows and hours after school into the cold of November getting them to perfection. This year the band also performed at the Big 33 All-Star Football game in Altoona The Highlander Band members are as talented on the stage as they are on the street and football field They prove this with their annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. Preparations for these also require a lot of hard work in getting it Just Right. As the Senior members leave, they will proudly take with them the cherished memories of the practices, performances, travels, and the good times they’ve had as a result of being members of a championship band. This music group replaced the Men's Glee Club of previous years and has proved to be a successful addition to the regular mixed Chorale. Even though Mrs. Bowman was often caught up with a case of the sniffles and frequently couldn’t sing, everything was successful due to her devotion and hard work. This was shown in the following students being chosen for district chorus: Maria Born, Carolyn Graboski, Dave Stewart, Steve Dickson and Nathan Kirk. Along with District Chorus, Nathan Kirk and Dave Stewart also advanced to Regional Chorus. The chorus groups had many great times from finding stuffed animals at Christmas to wearing 50's and 60's dress to wearing Mickey Mouse ears and singing M-l- C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. 127 Chorale Honors COUhJTY CHORUS — 1st Row: Lisa Frank, Lee Lee Lansberry, Carolyn Colberg, Dawna Stewart, Carolyn Grybosky, Chris Smith Jean Vallery. Dave Stewart 128 Meeting the Challenge To create a work that will be valued for a lifetime is a difficult challenge that includes technical know-how, trouble- some decision making, and a great many hours of work. The planning of the entire book begins with the first days of school. From early in the year long hours are spent choosing pictures, laying out pages, cropping, writing copy, and typing in order to meet an early March deadline. During the entire process, the focus of the yearbook staff is to do the best possible job recreating what made the school year 1979-80 unique. The 1980 edition of the Highlander has been particularly molded by the leadership of senior editors Kim Shope, Barb Shero, and Rita Panaro. For the first time, the staff chose to design its own cover, selecting a design submitted by Scott Stolz and Barb Dranchak. Also, Haluska Studio’s professional photography was supplemented by the hard work of student photographers, Chris Venesky and Bob Parrish. Only the test of time will determine how well the staff has succeeded in molding together the various segments of life at Cambria Heights in order to capture the memories of 1979-80. Hopefully, the Highlander has met the chal- lenge. SENIOR SECTION — From Left: Val Gelormino, Karen Domalik. Diane Miller. Tammy Wysoki. Sue Baron. Fan- tasy Airlift provided the danc- ing pleasures for the many who attended. The High School Commons was creatively decorated with cupids and hearts adding to the Valentine spirit. Later, as the night progressed the King and Queen were selected. Gary DeSalvo and Janet Drzal were chosen as Sweetheart King and Queen. Both were crowned by senior Class Pres- ident, Ron Beunier. While sitting on the Royal Throne, an array of red and white balloons fell surround- ing the King and Queen. The night ended with a romantic slow dance in which everyone participated. 136 A Valentine’s Treat King and Queen for an evening Here at last! 137 Twosomes dance to a Fantasy Airlift beat Speaking Out This year the CH Forensic Team benefited from the addition of Mr. Gormish as assistant coach. While Mr. Schirf took care of the Informative, Persuasive, and Extemporaneous speakers, Mr. Gormish patiently coached the categories of Drama, Poetry and Prose. Although the team was lacking in Girl's Extem- poraneous, CH still managed to take second place as a team in every meet, through the cooperation of voluntary extemporaneous speakers. The accomplishments of the team were remarkable. Many outstanding students were: Debbie McGlynn, Bob Etchells, Mike Rozdilski, Dan Kelly, Emily Churella, Laurie Thomas and Maria Born who all advanced to district semi- finals at Saint Francis. This is the most that have advanced this far for many years. Many experiences prove to be a memory to those who participated, such as our picnic lunches, singing (?) on the bus, and nickels, nickels everywhere! There were many times we would like to forget, but on the other hand, there was also that moment of joy when they called your name for a ribbon. Writing, grammar, and typing skills are all important and highly developed in putting together an issue of Plaid Talk. Art and lay- out techniques also play an important role. This year Plaid Talk tried to use a different heading for each issue. There is much hard work involved and the reporters learn the responsibility for punctuality, accuracy, and trying to meet deadlines. There is a lot of time spent proofreading articles, and assist- ant editors Margaret Baran and Mary Miller are to thank for this. Diane Miller and Karen Domalik put in many tedious hours typing articles. Lastly, the staff appreciated the opportunity, provided by the Board of Edu- cation, to have a school newspaper. The Air Force Jr ROTC program at Cambria Heights was established in 1973. At this time boys were only per- mitted to join, but during the 1974-75 school term girls were also permitted to enroll. This year makes the 7th year that students have had the opportu- nity to partake in the program Cam- bria Heights is only one of twelve schools in the PA. area that have the Jr. ROTC program available for stu- dents In the program cadets learn the study of space vehicles, aviation, and the areospace life along with the ele- ments of national defense They also receive a better knowledge of military drill and discipline. The Jr. ROTC pro- gram gives the students the opportu- nity to strengthen their character in the military role of society This year was a year of learning for the ROTC cadets. The Freshman learned what it’s like to be at the bot- tom. even though they didn't really need any lessons in that. The Sopho- more cadets received their first les- sons in command Juniors were groomed for the positions of responsi- bility that they would have next year And the Seniors learned to accept the responsibilities of their decisions For the first time the cadets held a bake sale which proved to be a suc- cessful fund raiser Much of the money went to the fulfillment of the cadet s dream — purchase of a flight simulator to be permanently stationed in the ROTC Room, for the use of the cadets An intimate discussion1 T e a m 147 A I P h a F I i g h t B r a v 0 F 1 i g h t V w 1 •{ s ' « I ■« t 1 I t r !' • f - 1 - • ' «1 • ♦f Row 1: Mike Rozdilski, Crystal Trexler.
