Most buy their class ring during the sophomore year so that they can enjoy it for their remaining years in high school and for the rest of their lives. Even with the continued rising prices of class rings, stu- dents still buy them. Sometimes we wonder why. But when we have that ring and it is our very own, we know the answer. In future years, our class ring will remind us of the fun, laughter, and friendship we had at Cambria Heights Senior High School. 4 When Nora Zumovitch died on November 27, 1974, a terrible shock of grief swept through us all. Looking back now on Nora’s death, we still feel a twinge of sadness when we remember the joy and laughter that were so much a part of Nora. In her lifetime, Nora gave us the Gift of Friendship, a priceless gift that will never end. In Memory of. . . Nora Zumovitch THE GIFT OF FRIENDSHIP Friendship is a priceless gift that cannot be bought or sold, But its value is far greater than a mountain made of gold — For gold is cold and lifeless, it can neither see nor hear, And in the time of trouble it is powerless to cheer — It has no ears to listen, no heart to understand, It cannot bring you comfort or reach out a helping hand — So when you ask God for a GIFT, be thankful if HE sends Not diamonds, pearls or riches, but the love of real true friends 5 Helen Steiner Rice Faculty 6 7 Best of Luck From: Dr. Russell DeFrahn Superintendent of Schools During your studies about our country and society you may have become troubled and concerned. Society appears to have experienced a decline ot old fashioned standards of honesty and integrity. Our society will not survive without these basic ingredients. Our American system can only be threatened when the absence of honor destroys our confidence in one another. Your goal as individuals must be to practice the virtues our free society needs to flourish. Mr Donald Resko Senior High School Principal My sincere congratulations to the Class of 1979. For many of you this will mark the end of your formal elementary and secondary education. We sincerely hope that we have instilled attitudes of good citizen- ship and good work habits which will serve you in the future. A happy and prosperous future awaits those who diligently seek it. With a firm determination to suc- ceed, you cannot fail. Cambria Heights School Board Sitting: Left to Right: Mr. Ronald Marshall. Mrs Regina Klaswick. Dr. Edward Haluska, Mrs. Patricia Kelly. Members of the senior class nominated 11 girls to participate in the Homecoming Court, with one girl, Frannie Lansberry — being chosen as the Ninth Annual Homecoming.Queen. During a pre-game ceremony, Frannie was crowned the 1978 Homecoming Queen by Jayne Lampenfeld, who represented the senior class. Following the game, the Highlander cheerleaders sponsored the Homecoming Dance at the Patton Moose, where members of the court were honored. The Admiral Peary Vo-Tech School covers a variety of fields in order to ready the students for the outside world. Until this year, Cambria Heights attended the Vo-Tech as a whole. Due to the changing in busing situa- tions, there is now both a morning and afternoon session attending the Vo-Tech. This gives the students the opportunity to have their classes together with five other schools at one time. The pictures identifying the various fields are of the afternoon session. Stocked with an abundance of talented and spirited seniors, the High- lander football team became a power in the very rug- ged Mountain Conference. Except for 1st down per- formances against Forest Hills and Bishop Carroll and a tie with Central Cambria, the team would have achieved the ultimate dream — the championship. The exciting season was climaxed by a remarkable performance against the undefeated Colts of Northern Cambria. The Highlanders totally dominated the Colts in a game played before perhaps the largest crowd to ever see the Highlanders play at home. The football team can always savor the satisfaction of depriving their arch-rivals of the championship. The 1978 football players will be remembered as win- ners in every sense of the word as they played hard, spirited, sportsmanlike football that earned the respect of all those who were privileged to see them play. Mr. SHORTENCARRIER'S MESSAGE: “The 1978 football season was a very successful one. Winning seven games was quite an accomplishment, especially because one of those wins was over the undefeated Colts of Northern Cam- bria. As we look back over the season, we would like to replay a couple of the games, but that is impossible. We know of a few times when we didn’t play to our potential, but everyone has days like that. The teams on our schedule compiled a total win-loss record of 52-44-3, which proves to be a pretty good football schedule. Much of this year's success is due in part to the outstanding senior class. Our seniors with the help of some hustling juniors, were able to put together one of the finest teams in a long time at Cambria Heights. Those seniors will provide a winning attitude for other sports throughout the entire school year. We members of the football team would like to thank the cheerleaders, the band, and the student body for their sup- port during the ten game grind. We would hope that more people get involved with football next season. The coaches are always looking for more players, managers, program sellers, or just about anyone who wants to help develop the winning tradition. One last message to that fine group of seniors: No matter what it is you choose to do with your life, remember to “talk the talk and walk the walk and you too will be a winner!” 106 Wrestling Team Row 1- Dan Link Bryan Cordell, Ron Davis, Marly Link, Joe Konior, Mark Weakland. Dan Cordell Finishing 8-5 the Highlanders lost 4 out of their first 5 matches. But the C.H. squad, under new coaches, Rick Terza and Rick Bishop, came roaring back to win 7 out of the last 8 bouts, one of those a 25-24 upset over Cen- tral Cambria. The Highlanders participated in two Christmas Tournaments, a first at C.H. and had strong showings in both, fin- ishing second at the Central Cambria Tourney and third at Bellwood. In both Holiday matches, C.H. crowned seven champions. In all, nine of the 12 varsity wrestlers received awards. The four seniors on this years squad will be missed greatly. They compiled a record of 61-5-2. To have four wrestlers lose a total of five matches all season is quite an accomplish- ment. Hats off to Dan Cordell, Don Inzana, Ron Inzana, and Marty Yahner for their final lead- ership, alert attitude and a job well done! The Comeback Season After going through a poor 1977 season and beginning the 1978 season with four straight losses, the girls basketball team turned matters around to finish with a very successful 9-9 record. The girls team earned a great deal of respect from its opponents and fans as the season progressed. Most of the team attended the UPJ Summer Camp which brought out the individual skills of each girl and inspired them to work hard to make up for the lack of team depth. Leading the team was senior Mary Ann Bearer, who was selected for the Central B Western Girls’ Conference All- Star Team, Many of the girls had outstanding statistics for the season. Mary Ann Bearer poured in 289 points, Joanne Stoltz led the team in rebounds with 311 and also in blocked shots, 44. Carol Lantzy stole the ball 68 times while Arlene Wes- trick had a 66% foul shooting average. The team will always value the winning attitude they developed. They will also chuckle when they remember the “time out called with only one second left in the quarter. JUNIOR VARSITY: Row 1: Captain. Rita Panaro, Donna Ceschini, Robbi Lockett, captain. Under the command and guidance of new head mentor Ed Pion, the varsity finished with a fair 8-14 record. Although the team's record was below par, the players did not lose their poise or enthusi- asm and continued to work hard all season. The 78-79 season included such antics as . . Curt Holtz’s sound machine at Windber, Ryan Bill's two left shoes at Somerset, the unleashing of Ken The Hulk” Vescovi on opponents, and Doug Joker Thomas bringing the home uniform for an away game. Elias. Mr. Elias has led the band to three consecutive State Legion titles. Hard work and determination play a major part during football season, and throughout the year. To the mem- bers of the band, football season means: working from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with only a half-hour for lunch, sunburn the first day out . . . giving up your last two weeks of freedom . . . practice; in all types of weather . . . doing half-time shows again and again until it’s PERFECT . . . watching the freshmen goof-up . . . finding that your uniform no longer fits since the last parade and hoping that Mr. Elias won’t change the show again. But Band does not end with football season. Next on the agenda is the Christmas Concert, followed by seem- ingly endless practices to prepare for the annual Spring Concert, trip, and Memorial Day activities. This leads us once again to summer when the band busily prepares for the State Legion parade, proving that band is truly a four season activity providing meaningful experience, enjoyment, and self-satisfaction for all its dedicated participants. 126 Yearbook EDITORS Seated: Mary Lou Kopera. Theresa Passanita Standing: Janet Drzal. Nancy Noel. Val Gelermmo. For the staff members of the 1979 Highlander, creating a yearbook that would capture the essence of the 1978-79 school year has been a hec- tic challenge Early in the year the staff decided to publish a spring book so that all students could receive the Highlander before the school year ended In order to accommodate spring activities and graduation a sup- plement would later be added Then, because for all members of the staff working on a yearbook has been a new experience, first mysteries of croppers, lay-outs, and quad pack forms had to be mastered Finally, each member under the guidance of the editorial staff of Mary Lou Kopera. Nancy Noel. Theresa Passanita. The production of the paper is practi- cal experience for the members of the staff. They learn to take part in group work; as it takes several small divisions of people to make the paper a whole. They also begin to realize the importance of time deadlines and the need for factual information. The reporters have done a terrific job and they should be com- mended for their hard work.
