These young tradesmen are developing the ability to patch holes, straighten frames, pull out dents, and paint cars. BUILDING AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE The goal of this class is to teach students general upkeep and maintenance of buildings and their surroundings. 50 CARPENTRY C08MET0L0GY Future carpenters learn almost everything dealing with modern-day house framing and construction. A trade of beauty, cosmetology involves many facets: hair cutting and styling, facials, manicures, makeup, and pedicures. DATA PROCESSING As computers become more essential in today’s world, computer programming, keypunch, coding, and filing are important steps in a growing field. si DRAFTING Blueprint interpretation, architecture, mechanical drawing, and design are some of the techniques acquired in this area. ELECTRICITY Electrical students learn the intricate trade of wiring and electricity. DISTRIBUTIVE ED Distributive education discovers the various areas of business: managing, selling, display, advertising, marketing, and merchandising. 52 HEALTH SERVICE Personal care, blood typing, basic first aid, oral care, TRP, and CPR are abilities acquired to aid the physician and comfort the patient. HORTICULTURE Making special occasions more beautiful or average days brighter are the objectives of these students who arrange flowers and work in greenhouses and nurseries. 53 MASONRY Placing stone or brick in a sturdy and attractive pattern is a difficult but rewarding trade. PLUMBING Many types of piping and their uses are learned, as well as the installation of bathroom, kitchen, and heating fixtures. QUALITY FOODS Quantity production of food, as in cafeterias and restaurants, prepared with quality and distributed with congeniality, is the aim of these students. 54 A TYPE OF MILITARY Flights A, B, C, and D have been in competition all year for honor flight. Honor Flight is determined by the least number of demerits. Demerits are received during an inspection for not wearing the uniform, wrong combination, neatness of the uniform and the person, and the condition of the shoes. The pledge in the morning is alternated between the flights, and also counts toward honor flight. An original staff of over 35 students dwindled to less than 10, but those who stuck it out” were dedicated to producing a truly fine yearbook, and we feel we have succeeded fairly well. Members included Deb Yarko, Deb Gooderham, Debbie Ault, Nancy Shero, Lisa Dillon, Georgine Baran, Donna Williams, and Sue Baron. Others who assisted in various capacities were Eileen Thomas, Karen Snyder, Darlene Semelsber- ger, and Sharon Marshall. To these students and to the many others who helped in the production of the '78 Highlander, we offer our hearty thanks. Do I look busy? 60 Seated: Nancy Shero, Georgine Baran, Lisa Dillon. It is the Highlanders’ way of keeping up with the activities at Cambria Heights. Under the supervision of Mr. Anna and Vicki Lipnic, students work many hours writing and typing articles and preparing The Voice of the Highlanders. The news- paper is published six times a year and it represents an effort that the entire student body can be proud of. 62 ADVISOR: Mr. Dennis Anna ART AND LAYOUT EDITOR: Debbie Ault TYPISTS: Pat Shaffer, Diane Gresko, Aimee Garay, Patty Farabaugh. However, enthusiasm among its members runs high, for in the Appalachia IU8 Speech League, “Cambria Heights is a much-respected team, and always a sharp contender at meets. This year has been no different. The Highlanders placed in all three sea- sonal tournaments, capturing a first place, and two seconds. Many speakers advanced to the District Meet, Semi-finals, and Finals. Suzanne Chernisky contended at States, and Vicki Lipnic won second place in Statewide Boy’s Fiadio Announcing compe- tition. The club certainly has a bright future, and CH can look forward to many more honors earned by the Forensics team. MAJORETTES This year the Cambria Heights Band boasted a corps of ten hard working majorettes. These high steppers have many entertaining routines for each performance; not always baton, but often dance or pom pom routines which are choreographed by the girls themselves. They are seen not only at football games, but also at basketball games, pep rallies, and parades. The Majorettes are an added attraction to all in which they take part, and should be commended for their effort and fine work. Their Captain is Karen Bearer. Coach Felix Catalano built a superb team that finished the season with a fine 14-8 record. The Highlanders worked on game strategy this year, coming through with good defensive plays which were often their key to victory. CH gave up an average of only 47 points per game, which was the second best defensive tally in the county. Fans witnessed Bill Vescovi break the Cambria Heights scoring record, and also obtain his 1000th point. The climax of the season was also its finale: the Richland game. Revenge was never sweeter, as the Highlanders redeemed their name and knocked Rich- land out of the Tri-county Championship. The 77-78 team was truly memorable, but the group of students that backed it was no less outstanding. A special round of applause goes to Section 1, for supporting the High- lander cagers as no group of fans has ever done before. SENIORS 114 115 BASEBALL TEAM This year the Highlander baseball team enjoyed their finest season under the management of Wil- liam Schirf. Coach Schirf's “power cycle” paid off for the Highlanders as they ended their season 7-3 and headed for a playoff berth. This year’s team was led by six returning lettermen: seniors Cliff Waksmunski, Jon Milanesi and Doug Dietrich and juniors Chris Kibler, Ryan Bills and Craig McMullen. Pitcher Ryan Bills set a new Highlander record for games won by posting a 5-3 chart. Juniors Chris Kibler and Craig McMullen fell one hit short of tying the Highlander hit record for a single season. With an overflow of fine talent coming back for next sea- son, the Highlanders appear ready to give their opposition headaches once again.
