That first year is an important one because if you get off on the wrong foot and don’t do the things you really want to do and enjoy your- self, when graduation comes around, it’s too late. So make the best of it and make your high school years something you don’t want to forget. 86 • • |., VK' 1 IN I'M Mil 10 V | v 1.1-w IS 1« 11 llUKlVVH II u. The walls of Cambria Heights Senior High are only four years old, but in that four years they have seen many changes, and perhaps the biggest change was in the students who started here four years ago. The giggles and the sighs of that first freshman class have mel- lowed into the voices of the seniors of ’74. Modular scheduling has developed from a dream into a workable reality. Those members of the student body whose interests lie in technical fields have been afforded the opportunity to advance their skills at the Admiral Peary Vo-Tech. The initiation of the Air Force Junior ROTC program has also added to the expanding curriculum at CH. The sports program has grown no less with the addition of girls’ basketball, baseball, and swimming. Highlanders with an interest in drama and music now have the opportunity to do their thing” in the ever successful spring musical productions of the past few years. The program is designed to acquaint students with the aerospace age, to develop informed citizens, to strengthen character and to promote an understanding of the military role in a demo- cratic society. Students who enroll receive academic credit in Aeros- pace Education. Included in the program is the study of aviation, space vehicles and the aerospace environment, as well as the elements and requirements for national defense. Students also participate in co-curricular social and educational activities which are planned, coordinated, directed and controlled by an organized cadet corps. Lead- ership and management experience gained in corps activi- ties supplemented by classroom study of leadership and management. While students do not incur a military obligation by taking the course, they are informed on career opportuni- ties. Students who complete the ROTC program may enter military service at one or two pay grades above the recruit level. ROTC college scholarships arc available. At least one four year scholarship is awarded each year to a qualified student applicant in the unit. Up to one year of college ROTC may be waived for students who complete Junior ROTC. Students wear the Air Force uniform one day a week and participate in drill and ceremonies. The uniform is issued free of charge by the Air Force. During the first year enrollment was limited to boys. Girls will be included next year. 94 Receiving Leadership Awards from Col. For those of us who have been on the Girls’ Basketball team since its inception at Cambria Heights, this year was something special. There was a spirit of competition and togetherness radiated among the team members which allowed us to remain a close-knit squad whether we won or lost. Losing was hard for everyone, but it taught us to realize our mistakes and weak points and strive for improvements. Memories of victories and defeats, bus rides, practices, stopping at Burger King,” lectures, and friendships will remain with us in the years ahead, and it is these that have made all the work and time worthwhile. In the first, the Penn- sylvania American Legion Parade in Pittsburgh on July 21, the band took second place honors. At the Ebcnsburg Firemen’s Convention Parade on August 3, the Highlanders captured first place honors while in competition with many area marching units. Their work was only beginning, however. With the com- ing of Band Camp, the Highlanders took to the field to prepare the football halftime shows. The termi- nation of twelve weeks of hard work and practice was the Cambria Heights-Northern Cambria football game. At the end of football season looms another test of the band’s talents — the Annual Spring Con- cert. Once again, hours of practice and individual satisfaction will prove that the Cambria Heights High- lander Band is No. 1 on stage as well as on the field. 120 Highlander Band ROW 1: Lori Garay, Joyce Legros, Jamie Cattoi, Marcia Nagel, Kathy Adams, Ann Vcscovi, Sharon Cantelope. A visitor to C.H. at almost any time of day, except during lunch periods, will find silent figures sitting in the commons area. These students are not participating in a Science Department experiment in suspended animation, nor arc they models for aspiring student artists. They are members of the Chess Club who spend their free time developing mental concentration through a quick, or lengthy, game of chess. Experts arc given the opportunity to outwit skillful opponents in competitive tournaments. 139 Library ROW 1: Cheryl Julick, Marilyn McMullen, Beth Holtz, Mary Yuknavich, Peggy Churella, Barb Gooderham, Bernadette Bobby, Mary Paranich, Linda Golmicz, Russ Conklin. Any student knows how much more pleasant it is to listen to a tape than it is to sit in free center. Both faculty and students can thank the A-V Club for making the educa- tive process more enjoyable. The members of this organization, and their advisor, Mr. Cicero, arc responsible for the delivery and smooth operation of materials and equipment in the classroom and the library. 142 PI-AID TALK STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT: Eileen Gill, Connie Mikitko, Judy Novak, Mary Lou Smithbower, Karen Trinkley, Cheryl Kapello, Francis Gobris, Robert Schoppert, Patrick Malloy, Advisor John Voytko, Jeff Mulligan, Jim Haluska, Allen Gregory, Sandy Cordell, Editor Margaret Strittmatter, Vaughn Sunseri, Alice Thomas.
