It was a season of hope and joy; it was a time of fear and sorrow. It was a time for looking to the promise of the future, for dreaming dreams and building the courage to reach those dreams. It was a time for looking back nostal- gically to an earlier age — the 50’s — for a simplicity and innocence that our age could not offer. It was a period of laughter, excitement, thrills, tears, and wonder. It was 1973. Internationally, 1973 was a most beautiful year. It brought PEACE. The Vietnam War ended on January 27 giving us in high school our first real taste of peace ever. Warmer relations with both China and the Soviet Union give us hope that this newly found peace may continue for a genera- tion. Yet, the joy of peace also reminds us of the sadness of loss suffered by so many during the war. Nationally, 1973 was a year of many faces. It brought the re-election of President Nixon and gave some of us the privilege of participating in our first election because the voting age was lowered to eighteen. 1973 then brought the deaths of two great presidents, Truman and Johnson, leaving the United States with no former presidents for the first time in a century. The electronic wonder of television allowed us to intimately share the reunion of the prisoners of war with their families, to sense the emotions of men who had never seen their seven year old sons, to feel the love and courage maintained by men and women through horribly long and cruel separations. 1973 also ended the draft, easing the apprehension of all young men who approached the draft lottery hoping not to win. But 1973 had its bad moments, too. Crime and drugs continued to eat away at the moral fiber of our nation, leaving good citizens living in fear. A U. S. Senator, John Stennis, was shot by young muggers on a quiet street for no reason. We felt our parents quietly struggle against ever increasing prices and listened as they wondered how long things could go on this way. Locally, 1 973 offered something for everybody. For the sports fan 1 973 was unforgettable. The Pirates came within 1 wild pitch of making the World Series while the Steelers for the first time ever won a division championship and took one giant step towards the Super Bowl on Franco Harris’ miracle reception. Then, on December 31 the sports world caved in. First, the Steelers lost to the Dolphins; then Roberto Clemente tragically died on his way to help earthquake victims. The work scene was better as the mines and mills that are the backbone of the income in our area provided steady work for our fathers. Finally, the year brought another election to the Cambria Heights area with Arnold Miller, a disabled miner, challenging and defeating Tony Boyle for the leadership of the powerful miners union. Still, our concerns in 1973 were more with personal matters than international or even local problems. 1973 was a year of decision. First we had to decide our form of education, whether to continue with traditional education or to attend the new Vo-Tech school. Then as graduation approached, we had to make decisions that could affect us for a lifetime — to look for a job (what kind of job?), to attend college (despite warnings that there were too many college gradu- ates?), to get married? to travel and put our heads together? 1973 was a year of personal growth too. Faced with the reality of losing the security of school, we realized why 1 8 year olds are now considered adults. Still, no growth is made without mistakes and personal embarrass- ments which seemed so tragic at the time but now can be looked at with laughter. But most of all 1 973 was a time to build memories — memories of Yaba Daba Doo, hit songs quickly forgotten, special dates, flunked tests, term papers that seemed impossible to complete, demanding but con- cerned teachers, and friendships that will lighten our lives forever. This was the school year 1 973. A 71 UE OF LEARNING • . . A TIME OF LONELINESS . . . A Tt UE OF TOOErWERNESG . . . A TIME. OF HAPPINESS . . . A TIME OF QmJGGLB . . . 1973 WAC A TT WE OF . . . IN MEMORWM LBON RD BUCK S 36 U ORfG iV I i jMi SENfORG AT SEVEN SPRINGS At 8:30 A. M. on February 16, 1973, 121 members of the senior class boarded three blue and white buses destined to Seven Springs Resort for a day full of great times and precious moments. The bus trip proved to be an experience in itself, full of jokes, poker games, singing. Thumper, and assorted other games intended to entertain. Upon arriving at the lodge, the seniors made their plans for the day, whether it was skiing, snowmobiling, golfing, swimming, bowling, or just having fun in general. The chaperones, Mr. Gresko, Mr. Crowell, Mr. Olewiler, and Mrs. Gooderham, then turned the class loose on Seven Springs. Many chose to hit” the slopes, some hit pretty hard, while others showed a natural talent for the sport. Some decided to rent snowmobiles for an hour-long ride around the area. The boys had their own brand of snowmobiling, only they gave people a trip in the snow without the snowmobile. Others just preferred to stay in the lodge and participate in the fun and games the resort provided like some mean games of ping pong, some wild bowling, and some exciting pool games. Whatever the form of entertain- ment everyone was really sad to see five o'clock come and the time to head for home, but we each took back with us a new found feeling of togetherness and friendship that makes the class of '73 so special. Remember posing for this one, Clem? Listening to a “good joke. Paul Bunyon. 'Yon Ike and Ken have a lean and hungry look. They think too much. Such men are dangerous. A long ride home. The Vo-Tech School offered and continues to offer Cambria Heights students the opportu- nity to learn a valuable trade or technical skill while still in high school. Among the many things that made Vo-Tech memorable in '73 was the way it began. Since the new school was not completed for the fall, classes were taught in buildings that must have been scheduled for renovation. Then, when classes were moved to the new building, not all of the work was completed and disruptions continued. Still, because the school tried to duplicate a real life working situation in its shops and offices, the students learned. Vo-Tech was a unique experience in other ways, too. First, its atmosphere provided a great contrast to Cambria Heights. Also, it gave Cambria Heights students the chance to meet other students from area school districts and to form broadened friendships. Finally, Vo-Tech enriched the lives of its students by providing each with his own set of memories and a special skill that will provide for him for a lifetime. 96 4 REVLOC SCHOOL COLVER SCHOOL AUTO MECHANICS — John Weoklond, Dennis Hodden, Ken Hite, ELECTRONICS — Jeff Dillon, Rodney Davis Paul Covel FLORICULTURE — Magaret McConnell, Diane Lallemand, Joyce Yeck- WELDING — Ron Bender, Barry Bender, Rocky Myers ley 97 HEALTH SERVICES — Betty Noren, Diane Davidson, Flossie Blake, Gloria Knarr, Patrice Haluska 98 a i i PERSONAL SERVICE — Mary Bills, Joan Davis, Karen Hite, Sue Woodley, Terry Banik, Yvonne Gobris WELDING — Dave Jones WELDING — Mark Wharton, Tom Hilyer, Rocky Myers, Bill Bernard MECHANICS — Dave Angert, Richard Farabaugh, Eugene Fedor 100 DATA PROCESSING — Kathy Inzana, John Lechene MACHINISTS — Larry Sever, Tom Doughty, Jerry Karlheim, Al Petrunyak ELECTRICITY — Brian Everett, Al Thomas, Kevin Hite, Pat Bur- key, Rick Hugill, Mark Shevock, Anthony Fasoli 101 Sports '73 was . . . intense competition . . . many, many hours of dedicated practice . . losing and winning with pride . . . developing a personal competitive spirit that will mold charae ter for the future . . . heartbreaking losses by both the Girls' Basketball Team and the wrestlers ir their last competitions of the season that ruined perfect records ... a brilliant season for the cross country runners who finally earned the recognition they deserve ... the wrestlers gaininc statewide recognition by extending the wrestling string to 43 straight wins . . . frustrating injurie; that kept the basketball team from ever fielding its best squad . . . CONFERENCE 19 OWPfONO 72 INDIVIDUAL TROPHIES 133 In the Cambria Heights scope of activities and organizations, there is something for everybody. A large proportion of the student body takes advantage of the opportunity to pursue their inter- ests and further their abilities in more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. The largest single interest is in music. The Cambria Heights marching band has become known in the Cambria County area for the polish of its drills and sound of its music. During the concert season the band proved that it can do more than fancy footwork. Not to be outdone by the instrumentalists, the vocalists in the form of the mixed chorus and glee club also produced memo- rable music. Then, the Spring Musical ‘‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” found both groups pooling their efforts for professional performances. For students with literary interests Cambria Heights offers a student newspaper. Plaid Talk, and a yearbook. The Highlander. Students working on either publication spent untold hours writing, photographing, laying out material, and muttering to themselves in an effort to communicate what they saw and felt. Two new organizations also took Cambria Heights by storm in '73. Chess found its way to Cambria Heights by way of Iceland as students daily during free centers locked minds in mental battles rivaling the Fischer-Spasky World Championship matches. The Chess Club even ran its own tournament to determine Cambria Heights' own threat to Bobby Fischer. Also a science club was begun to further scientific interest in our school. While these activities and organizations are just some of the opportunities found at Cambria Heights in '73, every CH student could find something to interest him. 134 CAMBRIA :J HlGHl CAMBRIA WEIGHTS MARCHING- BAND The 114 member Cambria Heights Highlander Varsity Marching Band, which included 78 playing pieces, 8 major- ettes and a 24 member all-girl colorguard displayed great form and precision throughout the 1972 football season. This unit, under the direction of Mr. John Elias, earned and received wide acclaim for its outstanding performances. The first show presented was a Spiritual Show which included such selections as Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Joshua and “When the Saints Come Marching In. The next presentation was “Mr. Touchdown U.S.A. which was a unique salute to football, complete with a plastic football dummy and rousing football fight songs. All 4 branches of the United States Armed Forces were highlighted in A Salute to the Services. The fourth and final production of the season was Spanish Show. Played were such fine selections as El Cum- bonchero and Hernando's Hideaway.” Whenever the hare-working, highstepping Highlander Band strutted onto the.field no fans left the stands for pop- corn because the entertainment — Highlander style — was superb. The results of the long and tiring practices were cheered by thousands. 136 HEIGHTS NDER $, Row 1: Joyce Legros, Cindy Bailey, Sharon Baker, Janice Garay, Denise Cordell, Terri Trexler, Paula Bakajza, Ann Vescovi, Joan Bearer, Cathy Adams. SENIORS The Highlander Majorettes, with Co-Captains Paula Bakajza and Janice Garay, had a very good season. The majorettes started practice in June when four of the seniors went to Clarion Majorette Clinic. Their days were spent getting new ideas, learning routines, and going to lectures. At the end of summer the majorettes, along with the Band and Color Guard, spent two weeks in band camp. The hours of hard work proved rewarding after knowing they put on a good half-time show. One of the special attractions this year was when the majorettes twirled fire. Although it was the first experience for all of them, it was nicely executed. Another special attraction was a modern dance rou- tine to El Cumbonchero. The majorettes worked vary hard to provide good half-time shows, as well as routines for the pep ral- lies. A message from the staff: To capture found memories and vis- ually represent them is almost an impossibility. Most memories lie only within and never can actually be pho- tographed by anything but the mind. Still, we, the Highlander Staff, have made a dedicated effort to present Cambria Heights with a collection of the names, faces, and memories of 73. The job of assembling and organiz- ing a year’s worth of memories is not an easy task. We will be the first to admit that there have been some tense times. We don’t claim to have captured every moment, but we hope we have captured enough memories to keep 1973 alive for a lifetime. 145 PLA1DTAUC EDITORIAL STAFF: Mr. John Voytko Row Amy Sharbaugh, Patty Bakale, Debbie Kimack, Debbie Kost, Mag Strittmatter. Among the largest and busiest groups at Cambria Heights are the corale groups - the mixed chorus and men’s glee club. Through the years the Cambria Heights area has come to expect a high degree of excellence from the singers, and this year’s group has even exceeded expectations. Standing out among many good singers was Mary Anne Kibler who attained Regional Chorus honors. The chorus and glee club annually present two major concerts at Christmas and in the spring. For Christmas this year the chorus, along with singing traditional Christmas music, performed a contempo- rary work entitled “Where Shall I Find the Christ Child which combines music with choral reading. This particular performance was loudly applauded. Yet, besides that faint feeling as the curtain opens on concert night, what the singers may most remem- ber are the practice sessions with Mr. Olewiler play- ing the piano, singers gasping in unison for air, and sopranos getting carried away as they heighten the tempo. The memories of our chorale groups will leave a song in our hearts for a lifetime. This year’s production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying may be the most memorable of a long line of highly acclaimed C.H. musicals. Under the direction of Mr. William Olweiler and Mr. John Elias, the cast and stage crew produced a play worthy of Broadway. With Mary Anne Kibler and Jim Urbain who play the leading characters, Rosemary and Finch, being supported by Bob Brown (Frump), Ron Farabaugh (J. B. Biggley), and a host of other actors, the ‘73 musical was one of the most ambitious productions yet attempted by Cambria Heights. Because of a number of complicated setting switches, the technical crew had to solve many headaches. Also, many dance scenes, choreographed by Mr. Terry Huber, still have the actors wondering how they did it. The reason for the smooth performances was the continual rehearsing from the first of January to the end of March. Yet, it was during these long winter practices that the cast developed the warm spirit of an acting family that they will remember long after the audience's applause for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying performances stopped echoing.
