These are especially important to us because they will be the basis for the nostalgic memories which we will form in later years. From the outset, we were affected by the academic program which is created and conducted by the administration. Because of this program, everyone is given the oppor- tunity to gain knowledge while renewing and forming friendships with members of the other classes. Throughout the year, we looked forward to the various activities. In keeping with custom, our class picked its favorites. With the support of the student body, seniors provided impetus to the diversified athletic programs and participated in band and chorus. Seniors initiated the Sadie Hawkins dance and helped in the Christmas program. Members of the class upheld the Mardi Gras and class play traditions while others strove to make organizations such as the newspaper successful. The '64 Highlander is a showcase for these sundry phases of our last high school year. It is a written and pictorial record of the accomplishments of the. entire body of students with a special accent placed on the role played by seniors. Therefore, the class of 1964 presents this yearbook to the students of Cambria Heights in the hopes that they will march along with us through our year.” 3 We, the seniors, wish to dedicate the 1964 edition of the HIGH- LANDER to our senior high school principal, Mr. John I. Barnard. All of the students of Cambria Heights, especially the seniors, are grateful to him for the help, friendship, and guidance he has offered the student body when it was needed and welcomed most. Mr. Barnard received his college degrees at Grove City College and the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career in this area, Patton, in 1928. The subjects he taught were chemistry and physics. Before this, he had taught at Meyersdale, Tarantum, and Ellsworth, where he held the position of principal for two years. As we proceed along the path of life, I am sure that we, as have many others before us, will remember this dedicated man, Mr. Barnard. 4 SWW S CucatcM FIRST ROW. left to right: Earl Stoltz, Vice-President; Mrs. Florence Zalisnock, Dr. Edward Haluska, President; Damian Holtz, Non-member Secretary; Germaine Niebauer. The senior class extends its thanks to the members of the joint school board, whose forward thinking and constant planning have made our years at Cambria Heights more productive. The board is responsible for the efficiency with which our joint school district is managed, and the class takes this opportunity to express our appreciation. Your formal elementary and secondary education will end with graduation in May. Our task is com- pleted; we have attempted to instill in you those attributes of citizenship which will serve you in the future. Congratulations. We leave you with this thought; You have each been given a bag of tools, A formless rock and a book of rules, And each must make ere life has flown, A stumbling-block or a stepping-stone.” s4 ti4t4Utt Sufrenuutitty “Ptittcifial In the fourth year of the sixth decade of this exciting century, you become graduates of Cambria Heights Senior High School. This is an honor that carries with it a responsibility to do the most you can to promote the ideals of our beloved country and to practice the religious principles taught you by your parents and spiritual advisors. A happy and prosperous future awaits those who diligently seek it. With a firm determination to succeed and with God s help, you cannot fail. ScAoot 'P'UKCifctU I wish to compliment the members of the class of 1964 on your scholastic achievement, your development through your school activities, your good school citizenship, and for your plans to equip yourselves for a life of service, proficiency, leadership and a decency of purpose. I know you will ever strive to attain the ideals of honor and faith we inherit from our forefathers with the courage and humility to surmount your barriers in a manner that is a credit to yourself, your school, and to those of us who have been privileged to work with vou. oyvyt ccaJL (J$ STEPHEN P. COACH BAKAJZA In the 1963-64 football season, the Highlanders made their presence felt in every contest in which they engaged. Senior players Gerald Baker, Paul Baker, George Born, Thomas Cicero, Peter Cossitor, Edward Fogle, Gary Noel, Barry Pellas, Daniel Pompa, James Ross, Roger Spanella, William Yeckley, James Zurenko and managers William Marshall, Lawrence Shutty, and Patrick Lechene provided the driving force needed by any good team. Under Head Coach Stephen Bakajza and Assistant Coaches John Nevins and Donald Resko, all the players demonstrated good, clean, hard-nosed football in every contest. The High- landers proved that long hard hours of practice pay off. We are proud of the accomplishments achieved by the players this year. Through hard work, patience, and effort on the part of the players, the team compiled a fine record of ten wins and eight losses. Although all the players put forth great effort, the team was especially aided by the labours of four boys: Thomas Cicero, Peter Cossitor, Edward Fogle, and Robert Swisher. These boys are seniors and have played their last Highlander basketball. Probably the best reason that can be given for the team's success is coaching. Through the excellent coaching of Mr. Solomon, the talents of the players are developed and a fine sense of sportsmanship is instilled in each boy. We, the departing class of '64, wish to share the memories of the band and chorus with you. We have worked hard but have enjoyed these activities, for they are part of the wonderful memories we made during our year at Cambria Heights High School. Under the patient and able supervision of Mr. Getz and Mr. Karolchik, our music department is one of which we all can be proud. The Christmas program was once again a huge success, with the high point of the evening being Mr. Boes’s singing of O Holy Night. ■ The seniors in band received the long-awaited sweaters and letters on January 9, 1964, at the Annual Awards Concert. A number of band members participated in the school's dance band which was formed for the purpose of playing at various school activities. Arlene Easly, Mariannne Haluska, Mary Frances Senita, and Paul Gill won the distinction of representing our school at District Chorus. Those representing Cambria Heights in County Chorus were Alice Lantzy, Leslie Maher, Robert Rennie, Gregory Drahuschak, Rita Haluska, Robert Lapenna, and John McCloskey. Barry Collins, Gregory Drahuschak, Robert Lapenna, and 'James Nalisnick participated in Dis- trict Band. Barry Collins and James Nalisnick earned seats in State Band. Those representing our school in County Band were John Fitzpatrick, Joyce Hnatkovich, Theresa McConnell, Rosemary- Sherry, George Hughes, Paul Tobie, Charles Horn, Jean Ann Lapenna, and Jo Ann Lapenna. The student council is an organization of the student body which attempts to bring the administration, faculty, and students together and which is designed to promote new activities. This organization is headed by Mr. Karolchik who initiates and executes all undertakings and devotes much time to making it worthwhile. He is responsible for introducing many innovations which our school had never had. Mr. Karolchik has made the student council something of which Cambria Heights students can be proud. This organization is composed of representatives from each homeroom who attend weekly meetings. It is the duty of these members to inform the students on the latest happenings. The success of all the undertakings depends upon how well they present the ideas to the students. These members are given a responsibility which, they must fulfill. One of the main projects undertaken by the student council is the newspaper—Plaid Talk. This newspaper gives the students a chance to express their views and voice their complaints. Future projects include printing a student handbook and initiating a Cambria Heights Alumni Association. The student council is a student organization whose purpose is to better the school and serve the student body. 84 Student (2 u tctC s4etcuttie6 BULLETIN BOARD CHRISTMAS TREE Janet Kalenish, John McCloskey. The 1963-64 school year saw a Highlander innovation in the form of Plaid Talk, our school newspaper. It is a bright and welcomed addition to the school scene! This paper provides information and encourages a healthier relationship between student body and faculty. Once again, seniors took a leading role in starting this medium. Here too, underclass- men worked hard and prepared to carry on in the years to come. Each month in the paper, these students generalized about Cambria Heights and then went into details about the school’s activities. The staffers included features ranging from puzzles to poems, messages to menus, and calenders to comics. They also provided a special column in which outstanding students are honored. Along with the well-written articles, these newsmen furnished their readers with a copious supply of interesting photographs pertaining to school events. Thus, Plaid Talk and its staff were valuable assets to our senior class. 86 FIRST ROW, left to right: William Mitchell. Robert Barnes, Robert Swisher. James Nalisnick. Now we are ready to organize our futures. We can evaluate whether or not we have made full and adequate use of the academic program offered to each of us. Our senior year has been filled with various activities. Now the athletic games are over. Gone is the excitement and anxiety. The band no longer marches. Our chorus is silenced. But the fond memories we have can never be forgotten. The Sadie Hawkins dance, Christmas program, Mardi Gras, class play, the musical—all of these wonderful moments live in our hearts. We are anticipating the magic moments of the Junior-Senior Prom and the thrill of graduation. Our senior year in high school is kept intact in the 64 Highlander. In it we can relive the wonderful moments of our senior year, see the entire student body as we left, and cherish forever our Alma Mater. Though the hills are green on which we gaze. Or white with winter’s snow, Here we long have seen such happy days, This is our home we know. Though we journey to a distant shore. We’ll remain your own for ever more.
