A M ssage T The Students Education is known to affect the appetite, eyes, and muscle tone. lt is essentially lonely and essentially un- comfortable, and it is the twentieth century's best bet. Against the glut of materialism, against hipsters and herd- sters who would cheerfully clutter us with commodities, commercialize our taste, and dictate our creeds, the honest homeliness of education takes on a new attractiveness. But education is not enough. We must have commitment as well, and the mid-l960's offer splendid eX0rfIPleS of the combination. Young people are involved in voter registration projects, in the Peace Corps, and in demonstra- tions and debates which determine main policy decisions in their schools and in their nations. Even in entertain- ment, the personal and traditional appeals of folk music are making strong inroads upon commercial music manufac- tured mechanically for an unthinking and orgiastic audience, and young people are responsible for the change. Taken together, education and commitment will bring discomfort, for there will always be more questions than time for answers, and more proiects than time for service. A conscientious person must be bothered by both diffi- culties. Even so the combination of education and commitment will endow our existence with meaning, purpose, and humility. We could do worse. Very truly yours, ' w. -gg' .-C. A-X ff , Greg Co wan 2 Professor of English, Clark College
