CVO 6 dl. rs. ua Nr er X, . r. . 9 r To have known and observed the class of '38 during these past four years is to havelone's aith renewed both in youth and coun ry. We may look with apprehension on our nation- al and international problems but I be- lieve there is both hope and a way out for that country which annually sup- plies its adult life stream with thou- sands of young people imbued with a purpose to succeed personally and also with an understanding and loy- alty to the institutions of our great country. We believe confidently that our graduates of '38 possess such qualifications and we are very proud of them. ,Q I May you as you enter and leave our halls dedicate yourself to giving your best as a student and citizen. May you train yourselves to recognize the needs of the school, home and so- ciety and with study and clear think- ing meet these needs, that improved conditions may lead to greater hap- piness for all. Recollection Last night when I was all alone, my thoughts fled to that day when we we1'e standing in the sun of afternoon. So gentle a breeze and still a sea and the wind through the rigging sang songs to me. Our words were not very important-neither time nor place -just that we both were there. The smile upon your face was pleasant even though the caustic hne of your lips was grim and skeptical. Some of your words still echo in the deeper vaults of memories -they are strangely bitter and sweet. bitter because they Ached with hopelessness and sweet because you said them and did not mean to hurt. Fred Parsons Advisor .... . Mr. Walter Erickson The Boys' Federation is a new trend in the schooling of high school boys. It is an organization composed of and governed by boys only. The club ob- jectives deal mainly with adapting the boys to present day conditions. The Camas Boys' Federation was organized in 1937 and last year in- cluded among its activities: Patrolling grounds during football games, con- structing field markers, forming welcome committees for other cities, serving on hall duty and selling programs at wrestling matches. The money for selling programs will be used for the 332.50 annual dues and other such assessments. A conference of all such organizations in Southwest Washington is held each year, with four 01' more delegates, at least two of which must be Jun- iors, representing each school. Last year George Repman officiated in the absence of the President, Marvin Lethlean. The meeting, during which a constitution was drawn up, was held at Centralia. Next year the meeting will be held at Chehalis. The name chosen for the consolidated organizations in Southwest Washington is The Southwestern Washington Boys Club. The theme for this year is to create new ideals, better understanding, and to improve their citizenship in the future. LEE BEAMAN Dramatics The initial production which gave impetus to our successful year was Louisa M. Alcott's immortal, Little Women. Sedate Daley was an excellent Jo, Janet Blake and Ruth Brown play- ing the parts of Meg' and Amy, respectively, was most convincing. Edith Griffith played a most lovely and appealing Beth. Marie Mathis as Mar- mee was played excellently. Aunt March was a most delightfully eccentric and evoked much applause with her bizarre costume and mannerisms. War- ren McNett as Laurie was delightful, as also was Lee Beaman as John Brooks. Arthur lleynolds playing Professor Bhaer was also excellent and .lim Newquist did very well as the devoted father. This play was given December 15 and worked splendidly with the pre-Christmas spirit. The lovely Victorian costumes added much to the play's success. The second production, the proceeds of which went toward the financing of Our Annual was Remember the Day. Most of us who had the op- portunity to witness this delightful production will remember the philos- ohpy and theme for many a day. Remember the Day unfolds the story of Dewey Roberts played superb- ly by Lester Storms, a typical schoolboy, absorbed in athletics and not so interested in arithmetic until he fell in love with his teacher, the pretty Nora Trinell, Mary Sterr. lt was Miss Trinell's descent from a line of sturdy shipbuilders that first won Dewey to her. He loved ships, he was inces- santly whittling models of the picturesque square riggers. Dewey was hurt when he discovered that Miss Trinell was in love with Dan Hopkins, a handsome athletic director, Marvin Lethlean. It came as a shock to him and brought his boyish dreams tumbling about him. He goes away to school. In the epilogue Dewey returns, a power in the shipping world, meets his ag- ing teacher in a Washington hotel lobby. Dan Hopkins had gone to war and been killed. Dewey's boyhood calls out to be nice to her, but a telegram calls him away to an important conference. Before leaving, however, he sent her a bunch of violets. The climax to our successful year was the Senior class production, Sev- en lieys to Baldpate, given April 19, before a most appreciative audience. lt is an excellent mystery thriller. Warren McNett carried the heaviest part of the play on his shoulders and did an outstanding piece of dramatic wo1'k, he was indeed superb as Magee the novelist, who came to Baldpate to write a novel and got more than he had bargained for. Mary MacDonald as Mrs. Quimby, the wife of the caretaker, was very good, and Richard Johnson was a convincing caretaker. The first key to open the lnn door was Mary Nor- ton, played by Eileen Millard and her companion Anna Reilly. The excite- ment continues with the arrival of Bland, Lee Beaman. who came to hide the money in the safe of Baldpate Inn. A rather weird character both in dress and character is Peters, the llermit, Art Reynolds. The next to turn their key in the Baldpate door are Mayor Cargan and Lou Max, Alfred Chasse and Harry llietze. The president of the Reuton railroad, Francis Monaghan, brings the sixth. Magee accused them of murdering a woman, a blackmailer played by Marie Mathis. After much confusion, calling the police and having several arrested, the seventh key turns in the , lock and the owner of Baldpate, who is none other than Bob Williams, walks in. These individuals who have been mas- quarading as crooks, etc., are a stock company from the neighboring town hired to put on this act for the benefit of Magee. Magee, however, wins his bet and writes his novel. A major part of the honor for all those productions goes to Miss Ann Leslie, drama director of Camas lligh School. who, through her never ceasing efforts, unfailing interest and encouragement of her youthful thespians. has been in- strumental in bringing success to this ambitious and suc- cessful drama venture this year. ILICNE J1'N ' Girls League President . Eileen Millard Vice-President . Leona Dunn Secretary-Treasurer Joan Palmer Advisor . . Mrs. Maclay The council members are: Bernice Steele, Marie Mathis, Joan Beidleman, Constance Grace, Doris Lorenz and Kathryn Sample. As a project this year the Girls' League chose hobbies. and divided into three groups according to their interest in doing things. making things. or acquiring things. Of the money earned by selling candy in the past years, S50 was contributed to the new auditorium and S25 to the motion picture machine which is being purchased for the schools. In the spring another S10 was voted for the purchase of a picture for the Home Economics Department and a very lovely silver tea service was presented to the high school. The officers and one delegate, Annie Griffith, were sent to the fall conference at Shel- ton. Anna Sterr and Janet Blake attended the Spring Conference in Raymond accom- panied by the President, Eileen Millard, and Irene Junge, Secretary of the Southwest VVashington Girls' League. A wage scale for girls working in homes was compiled and published in the Camas Post in order to establish a definite standard for students doing this type of work. This has been indeed a most valuable and profitable year in League activities. HOXV.-XRD OLSEN Baseball When the curtain for the 1938 baseball season was rung up, Coach Walt Erickson was enthusiastically greeted by a veteran infield and outfield ac- companied by many up-and-coming prospects. The pitching staff proved to be unusually stalwart, consisting of Captain Harry Rietze, curveball a1'tist, Clifford Woodman, three-year veteran southpaw hurler and Ray Orteig, whose specialty was the fast ball. These mainstays were reinforced by Ol- son, Darker, Nolan, Ilenry and Colladay, a promising group of pitching stars. In the infield, Rietze competently handled first base when not on the mound and second base was held down by diminutive Don Gigler, playing his third sensational year. The position of shortstop was the scene of a battle being waged by Jim Newquist and Bill Whitmore. Ray Orteig, the best stick-wielder on the team, rendered invaluable service on third base. The important receiving honors were divided between Kirkpatrick and Rep- man. The outfield was adequately covered by a trio picked from Dick New- comb, Cameron Mcliakin, Sid Ilorrigan and Ray O'de1l, whose batting is about at an even par. Camas opened the season by splitting a double-header with the Grant Generals. The Papermakers dropped the first by a close margin but came back in the second game to win 15 to 2. In a two game series with Washougal, Camas dominated the field by bombarding Wiggs Kaiser for many hits in both games and taking them in easy stride. Woodman pitched two-hit ball against Union High of Mill Plain to com- pletely baffle them but numerous errors gave the Mill Plain boys four runs to make the final tally 7 to M1 with Camas on the big end of the score. The Papermakers dropped their first league contest in a heart-b1'eaker with Cathlamet in which the visitors came from behind in the last inning to win 3 to 1. The only Camas run was scored by Ortelg on a long home run. In a non-league game, Battle Ground, last 5'ear's state champions, eked out a narrow victory over the Red and lilack team by the margin of 3 to 2. Lack of funds inspired the baseball team to sponsor a benefit dance and basketball game, from which enough money was raised to carry the squad through the season. SID IIORRIGAN and TED TRACY Wrestling Coach Ward Foster's grapplers, led by Emmett Scott, had the most suc cessful year in the history of wrestling in the Camas High School. There were eight matches won and three lost. In the eight won, there were foul championship teams and one runner-up that our team beat. The third Pacific Northwest lligh School tournament was held in Camas There were 135 boys from Oregon and Washington that competed in the tournament. Hill Military Academy took the Bruce E. Thurber trophy, a three year cup, home with three wins and Camas came in second with two wins. Three of this years nine lettermen are Seniors. Captain Emmett Scott Arthur Reynolds and Clyde Harris. The other lettermen are Omar Rhodes Ray Eggebraaten, Milton Knode, Wayne Smith, Lester Storms and Dick Mulleneaux. Others who turned out for wrestling a1'e Frank DeTemple Ifrecl Parsons, Walter Jensen, George Dailey, lion Martin, Gordon Gray Stanley Ports and Paul Whitmore. Camas-10 to 9-Manley Center.
