Not Pictured: Gina Dela Torre, Tara De Vries, Jim Lawson. Often, a large percentage of Calvin students have a fuzzy perception of Student Senate. This is because our goals tend to be abstract. For, above all, we seek to be an avenue for growth, and measuring growth is difficult. Also, it is difficult to see evidence of Senate working toward growth when we struggle with what might at first seem to be small matters. Through even the small matters, however, we - this year's elected representatives - tried to be dedicated, energetic, and sincere in working to facilitate growth on Calvin's campus. The Finance Committee, in the capable hands of its chairman Dave Schaap, provided Senate with clear budget proposals for funding the twenty- three student organizations that Senate is proud to be able to help function ef- fectively. Dave, who finishes his second year as Finance Chairman this year, has steadily and conscientiously improved the budget processes, which will aid Senate for many years to come. Bill Vander Meulen worked not only to fill the approximate 125 committee positions on campus, but also formulated a proposal which cast into stone deadlines for the completion of the committee selection process, ensuring that the process will run more smoothly and efficiently in the future. He also worked to introduce a class in Christian Leadership to Calvin's curriculum. One distinction of this year's Senators was their constant pushing to upgrade Senate's contact with the student body. Joel Zuidema tried to im- prove Senate's contact with dorm leadership by being available for the Presi- dent's Council meetings. Senate also worked with dorm presidents to bring together all faculty, administrators, and full-time employees of Calvin in a candlelight Christmas Carol Sing on the Commons Lawn. The Public Rela- tions Committee, chaired by Tara DeVries, strove to tap into the potential of our community by working to bring faculty and students to open avenues for growth. All of these activities, and more, show evidence of an energetic, ag- gressive, and sensitive group of Christians seeking to make Calvin a better place. Within the last year, Harambe Jahard has become more than merely an organization by the minority for the minority. lt also seeks to improve attitudes and relations between minority students and the majority--who at Calvin are Christian Reformed students of Dutch heritage. The Steering Committee of the Calvin Association for Political Awareness dedicated itself to heightening the level of political cognizance and concern at Calvin this past year. Don't laugh- 1984f85 was decidedly a year of increased political activity at Calvin. CAPA was pleased to find itself working alongside others, especially a vigorous Chimes staff, in such an atmosphere. Central American concerns in particular seemed to spark student response, thus reflecting a growing national feeling of anxiety about that lively region. Reassuring to CAPA was the fact that students from both sides of the political arena participated in this debate, thus proving that ldespite all appearancesl the campus is not in the grip of one monolithic political mindset. CAPA, of course, does not promote a particular ideology or party, but seeks merely to stimulate general political dialogue. lts members, however, may have some opinions of their own if they wish. 13,-fi V' I 76 l XXX QNX Q S N YQ .4 N35 . nu Thespians ii? Chimes this year was run by a large editorial staff with diverse interests. This was no accident. The goal of this year's Chimes was to broaden coverage of events in the Calvin community with features on faculty research and coverage of a variety of on-campus lec- tures. We reported on some issues in the larger Christian Reformed community with ar- ticles on Synod, apartheid, and the role of women in the church. We brought in other ar- ticles of general interest-reviews of movies, books, music, and plays, as well as world news reports, which provided a synopsis of current events and covered press conferences and visits of prominent persons to Grand Rapids. And all this without the aid of refreshments. Chimes . We're in it for the pizza. The Trouble with Dialogue The trouble with Dialogue is that it isn't Chimes and it isn't Prism land thank goodness, it isn't WCALl. Dialogue is supposed to function, so says the Communication Board's Constitution, as Ha forum for discussion of important issues and a medium of artistic bers of the Calvin community. Not an easy task. But it had its day when it was staffed by brilliant student editors and had a student and a faculty editor for each of four divisions : Fine Arts Division, College Community Affairs Division, World-at-Large Division, and Academic Arena Division.fWho should wonder such divisions are no more?l With functioning faculty and student editors in each of these areas, Dialogue was blessed with a defined role and a defined audience. lt could print articles on dorm life and the 4-1-4 semester schedule and historiography that would be expression available to all mem valuable and would be read. Apparently, this structure soon faltered and fell. Four faculty editors and five student editors were no doubt hard to come by, as hard as one student editor is now. ln its current condition, Dialogue wavers between being a journal which attempts to mimic literary journals with a wider audience. This year's Dialogue no doubt did too much of the latter. Admittedly, Dialogue's present equivocation of roles is not without its benefits. For one thing, it gives the single student editor considerable freeuom, as well as resposibility. But in its present state, Dialogue's position between Chimes and Prism is ambiguous. Faculty members no longer use Dialogue to express inter-departmental or administrative concerns. So Dialogue has become almost fully a student literary magazine, occassionally featuring articles by faculty. Like this, Dialogue is still valuable. And tradition lies thick enough that Dialogue will not soon disappear. But perhaps Dialogue could benefit by a return to ways forgotten, Besides, Calvin's student organizations have a fetish for constitutions. Dialogue's only existing constitution from 1968 demands the presence of the four divisions and the nine editors. Perhaps, this once, we should be strictly constitutional. When we began working on this year's Prism , we had ideas of working together, forging strong relationships tempered by the fire of hard labor in- to the wee hours of the morning, and learning firsthand the glories and rewards of leadership, decisiveness, and well-scheduled time. Well, that was ten months ago...and we're all older and greyer and balder and thinner and just a little wiser. We can't say we're sad the Prism is done. tWell, we could say it, but it wouldn't be truel, And there certainly aren't too many times when we'd want to stay up till 6530 AM working on layout when we could be writing a Religion 301 paper. But we are pleased with our yearbook las we hope you are pleased with your yearbookl, and we are proud of the way this year will be represented for ever and ever, amen. The absence of a group shot on this page has not been as oversight land is not, contrary to vicious rumor, due to lack of organization on our partl. In fact, we thought it quite appropriate not to have one. This Prism is the result of a number of people who did not work together, but pooled their individual talents to produce this thing we call a yearbook. The term is over, the holiday begun. With the issue, Prism mourns the passing of the Hippies on campus. This group, which was once characterized by student protest, scathing editorials, and stimulating classroom debates, has now dwindled to a negligible size. What was once a vibrant, integralvoice on this campus has become a mer whisper, to be cannonized by Chimes, Gordon Spykman, first floor Bolt, and now the Prism. Not obvious at first sight-though usually mentioned in every yuppie conversa- tion-is the yuppie G.P.A. Since yuppies have no respect for anyone who makes less than 530,000 a year, and since a high G.P.A. is necessary to gain entrance into law school, the yuppie guards his G.P.A. jealously. lf he receives a B in a core class midterm, he drops the class. The G.P.A. must not suffer. It takes presidence over boyfriend, girlfriend, movies, Trivial Pursuit games, and aerobic exercise-unless the aerobics is required for a core P.E. course. A yuppie with a low 13.74 or belowl G.P.A. is not a yuppie, Yuppies can be spotted en masse at their weekly meetings whose purpose is to aid the Calvin yuppie in finding a suitable, like-minded mate. One half-hour a week is allocated to this enterprise. The meetings are held on Calvin's campus, in order not to waste precious study time travelling to rural churches. For a mobile date, the Calvin yuppie will take his date to the Gerald Ford Museum, the lobby of the Amway Grand, or Arnies. The yuppies' devotion to the G.P.A., mate-finding, and conformity of mind have won them disparaging remarks from Chimes , Gordon Spykman, and First Floor Bolt. Not only will you achieve fame, fortune and prestige, but your office will double nicely as a bedroom. Solution B: The cloakroom located in the basement of the Commons Extension makes a lovely habitat for the student who likes to get away from it all. You're not likely to be discovered there-even by security, And being the only place where WCAL gets clear reception proves to be a bonus , as does ample closet space. Prism's Solution' to the On-Campus Housing Problem ln the Fall of this year, the Housing Department had to squeeze an additional 80 students into Calvin's already over- crowded dorms and apartments. Prism decided to help the Hous- ing department by finding alternative habitations for students who wanted to lived on campus. Solution C: The elevator in the Commons Extension provides a charming home for the student on the go. Of course, since the elevator moves slowly, you'll have plenty time to prepare for those rare occasions when someone actually wants to use it. 1 vm , A i, . f fl 9 i G Solution D: What better place to integrate life and learning than in your very own library carrel. There's no question that most people sleep there anyway, so why not make it official? IL Life in the Dorms ,JS F..- 'J E HULTZE ALWPWQQM r-1:60 I9 on UUTY ,, llCllEllE L , 441- ' qs I ,,,,. 5- Zi! I have never been one to break with tradition. The list of those who deserve to be thanked is immense. There were those that actually helped with the mechanics of the book and those who gave encouraging words and sympathetic hugs. Bob Talsma was indispensable. His extreme patience with, shall we say, an inexperienced editor was greatly appreciated. The dedicated and not so dedicated staff members, who pulled through in the crunch but unfortunately not before, also desrve honourable mention. My roommates, especially Arlene, deserve special mention. Not only did they bear the burden of living with me this year, but they came out full force the night of the deadline to get things finished. l'm sure they didn't realize that living with the editor meant they were on staff. For the errors and oversights in this book, we apologize. The overlooked organizations, the unbecoming senoir portrait, and the unpictured event were unintentional mistakes. lt would be a lie to say that putting together this yearbook was smooth-going. Yet we worked hard, had fun, and we hope that this book reflects that odd mixture of intense, exhausting work and equally intense play that is part of the life of a student. Special thanks to James Korf for supplying the Thespian photos, to Karen Sterk and Q Ellen Van t Hoff for dance concert photos and to the P E department for the team pictures. i 200 I i l l i i : I I 1 3 z 91 1 11 151,115.1-12 1 ,11 .11 1'1' , 1 '1-1.13 A 1- 1 1. i111 1 1V -', 4:11 1W4kA.l.1' 11111.
