1 , r A Professor Thedford Dirkse listens for falling glass in his Chemistry 20l lab. The pursuit of knowledge: pedantic or prcicticcil? Clearly, one should not attempt to answer a question without establishing first that the question is important. Similarly, one can hardly embark blithely on the task of a lifetime with- out making certain that the task is worth doing. Injunctions such as these do not have the binding force of an absolute, of course, but they are cer- tainly worth considering whenever questions and tasks whose relevance is not very evident are proposed. In par- ticular, the task of the college professor and the questions which he answers should be established as important prior to actually doing or answering them. Yet, students wonder if professors have seriously thought about the value of their teaching. That some professors might not question their own assump- tions is easy to understand since pro- spective professors must all go through the educational process themselves.
