A train leaves from Califomia, from New Jersey a car, from Florida a plane . . . On them are those who in a yearly ritual seek a place in a city in the north. Those who for the first time make the journey confer in uncertain phrases about There , Those who have gone before are easy in their talk of going back. Shaping their expectations with the memories of a year just lived they go There to make a beginning in the ending of the year. Now I had to make a transition from an abstract description of Calvin College to a consideration of the student body. I turned to my notes- - Fix'e ertractahle phrases to preface the sections of the book. AFive categories. the whole college, cut, dried, and placed in picas Though their ambitions differ and their commitments vary in strength and object nevertheless they form a student body. Sensing the inadequacy of what I had written I continued- Because they are alive they want to communicate, to identify. Having no hope of knowing everyone. they divide themselves into groups to know some better. I looked back at my notes. From groups I had to proceed to Cliques . But the need for a more satisfying communication results in the selection of three, or perhaps four who receive a special atten- tion. With them are shared quiet and happy. sad and boisterous moments. The notes demanded a consideration of the relationships formed between two people. Friendships defined in twenty-five words or less. Prizes will be awarded. . . They join in doing workg common tasks introduce the abilities of one to another. Enjoyment shared brings appreciation and some- times appreciation becomes love. Desirint' to be finished I followed the notes to individuals . And quietly comes a new realization of the complexity, before unseen. of themselves the individuals. It was incomplete and I knew. The five paragraphs could 1101 tell of antici- pation and reward, of failure and effort. Only the usual was there and the cotizmonplaee. With a sigh I sell! the copy to the editor. k evertheless a student body
