An unusual situation has generated a unique set of problems. A year of campus transition has become a year of separation-a separation which induced an enigma which is now often an enigma repressed. We consciously think ,OLLE J , CL H' about the other campus only in o -moments unless we have classes there or entertainment there. Four residential miles have become a barrier to organizational unity and have high- lighted problems of individual development.

Whether repressed, accepted, or forgotten, the problems involved in this transition re- main. On one campus Tradition Wavers, con- fused and hurt-confused as to the direction to be taken, hurt as to the steps already en- acted. Realization of the promise of new strength for the whole and concern for the eff ect on the individual combine with a poign- ancy which is heightened by the nostalgia for a familiar place which is soon to be abandoned. Here generations have lingered, loved, and learned. Yet here is the necessity for expan- sion and toleration for the faction Innovation. What an enormous magnifier is tradition! How a thing grows in the human memory and in the human imagination, when love, worship, and all that lies in the human heart, is there to encourage it. CARLYLE 4
