Most professors earn the wholehearted respect of youthful, exu- berant students,' some few professors capture their hearts, for as students come to know the man behind the podium, their respect grows into a species of honor sometimes called love. Professor of English, .lohn J. Timmerman, Ph.D., is a man who inspires love. Une cannot be a student of Professor Timmerman without coming to lznow and love the man. The professor and the man are one. He is filled with a great sympathy. After a semester of The Canter- bury Tales, the lecturer, Dr. Timmerman, becomes Geoffrey Chau- cer himself in the mind of his students. At the beginning of another semester, his face wrinlzles beyond recognition, and his body shalzes with the laughter of Samuel Clemens, and at the end of the same semester, he identifes himself with T. S. Eliot. He matches Eliot with his own sharp moral insight and criticism-he has awakened every conscience to the sin of coffee spoon sloth,' and who dares to graduate without having worn-out at least one dictionary? But he is not only sympathetic to his subjects. He is just as sympathetic to students as he is to the artists, poets, and characters of literature. The problems of his students become his own problems, and in his dealings with students, even his attempts at severity often succumb to an unabashed sentimentality. Sownynge in moral vertu was his speche, And gladly wolde he lerne and gladly teche. 26
