it is never an easy thing to express gratitude-words are so futile when measured by the deeds they seek to honor. particularly this is true when we attempt to show our appreciation for a career which has extended for more years than some of us have lived, and than any of us have been permitted to share here at calvin. ours is an op- portunity to recognize the service which, for the past twenty-two years, has been given to calvin college by Dr. Richard Drostg we undertake to do so with humility, but encouraged by the knowledge that he will be as sympathetic with our present failings as he has been with them in the past. as professor of history, as a sponsor of campus organizations, as director of chapel activities, and perhaps more than any of these, as a friend and personal advisor whose sincerity and warmth were immediately and constantly apparent, Dr. Drost has well merited the affection with which this year's prism is dedicated to him. 18

for over a quarter of a century Albert H. Muyskens has given unstintingly, un- selfishly of his time, his knowledge, his abilities, in a word, of himself, for calvin col- lege, and for us as her students. we should like to make one installment towards re- paying our debt of gratitude-a debt which is all the greater because payment has never been, and would never be, demanded-by dedicating this book to him. a dedication is at best a feeble means of expressing gratitude, the stiffness of language and the formalism of rhetoric cannot begin to manifest the love, the admiration, the respect which Mr. Muyskens has engendered in our hearts, and in the hearts of twenty-five generations of calvin students who have gone before. knowing that what- ever we do is not enough, we can only say to this kindly, humble, intensely human scholar: thank you, Mr. Muyskens. 20
