cvsciencew U 0 CD 3 C CD U . 0 inSCISI'ICSCD The scientist at Calvin goes about his worlt with a special purpose, lnhisstudiesand researches he is not satisfied merely to learn causes and effects and a number of semi-related facts. l-le is seelcing rather to fit the data of science into a meaningful pattern: he is working to build a truly Christian philosophy of science. The universe is to him a wonderfully vast, intricate, and fascinating system, one whose laws are distinctly meaningful as part of the revelation of God, l le applies himself diligently to the task of dis- covering and interpreting those laws. l-le observes the stars and learns the forces which govern their steadily circling galaxies. l-le counts the ingredients of the sun and finds its elements repeated on earth, he talces them into the laboratory and refines and compounds them, he probes the invisible structures of the atom and measures the vast energies hidden there. l-le watches a speclc of life creeping doggedly across a glass slide, and he observes while small green dots join water, air, and sunshine by their own secret process. l-le studies all this and more, seelting out the fundamental rules of nature. These principles are not the end of the Christianis inquiry, how- ever, Knowledge ofthe universe is only a means to a nobler end: the glorification of God. lo the scientist who is a Christian, the orderliness, the rich variety, and the ultimate mystery of nature are reflections of the wisdom and power and majesty of God. 25

This year it was We'll see you again at homecomingf' It all started long before the spider caught the fly and left him hanging midway between the first and second floors. We'd spent weeks in preparation. Lets see, there was 50 cents for crepe paper and ten for nailsgand after many hours of hard work our displays were ready. Student Council nominations for the Homecoming Hostess were posted on the main floor, and when the returns were in we found we'd chosen lovely Dot Reus as our Hostess and Lenore Anderson, Marge De Nooyer, jessica Beets, and Carol Homan as her four sparlcling attendants. Dot and her attendants were presented to the student body by Stu Sisco, one of our first string men, at the pep rally in the audi- torium, Monday afternoon. Monday evening-the big game, and though we spiders didn't catch the Wheaton fly on the basketball floor we had a marvelous time. Alumni, students, and friends returned to school for coffee after the game. A student committee served coffee in the Commons Building which was open for the occasion, though it was not yet com- pleted. The Main Building was open to all who wished to see the displays and posters put up by the various clubs. Thus we remember our second annual Homecoming.
