th e campus... Calvin College is the embodiment of your grand- fatheris and my great grandlathens courageous iaith and persistent determination. Faith conceived, deter- mination built. And Calvin College became not a mere collection ol buildings providing teachingflearn- ing facilities lor a stahl ol dictatorial instructors and a regimented student body, but an educational capital erected on the stable Foundation ol truth and governed by the principles of our Reformed heritage, These principles have inlluenced every area ol study and directed all ettorts toward a single objective. That objective is the absorption of man in the gloritication of God. This is basic. But Calvin College represents much more. It is the sum total ol my impressions, experiences, associationsvall unique only because they have hap- pened to me. Transplantation from home surroundings to an academic environment has called lor radical ad- justments, and elastic adaptability. It has involved shouldering new responsibilities, and enduring some emborrossments. But the appeal of gaining advan- tageous lactual lcnowledge and the intellectual stim- ulation ol re-thinking, evaluating, and criticizing others' thoughts have compensated lor periodical discourage- ments. The real value ol mental development is not to be reckoned in dollars and cents but in potential usefulness. Calvin College is this, and more. It is the witness oi the discipline of conflict and the impact ol decision. Cut of the insecurity of loosening home ties grows a healthy sell-reliance, out of exposure to both the novel and the commonplace in life emerges the power ol judicious selection. Competition gives impetus to the vaulting ambitions ol the careerist. The source ol support For our sell-expansion is a group oi sympathetic counselors ahfering encouragement, yet restraining intemperate action. We malce mistalces, sometimes trivial, sometimes serious. Problems may call for special assistance, olten the best remedy for an ottense is discovery. Ultimate personality progression is a vital concern of our school, For it will be an important factor in determining our etlectiveness in the world. 11

The new Commons Building is a symbol of vision and progress. It is the evidence, of the founders vision-a vision stemming from the Reformation, developed by John Calvin, perpetuated by the Christian Reformed Church. It is the material progress of an educational structure, whose cornerstone is Christ and whose chief end is the glory of God. From a modest beginning in a Grand Rapids parsonage our college has grown to a campus of five large buildings. But progress was possible only because of loyalty to the ideals of Christian education. There was the loyalty of the ideal of Christian education. There was the loyalty of our own school, of our individ- ual churches, and of our denomination at large. We gave because we lcnew there was a need. And there was a need because we wanted ade- quate facilities for our expanding college. We gave of our material means in order to reap spirit- ual and cultural benefits. The Commons Building signifies the integration of the various phases of college life. Housing a spa- cious student lounge, club offices, a snaclt bar, and a dining hall, it is the social and recreational center of our bustling life. l-lere we meet old friends and malce new ones. It is here that we reminisce about the memories of the past and project our ideals for the future. At coffee-time we engage in lively chats or in profound discussions. The Commons Building is the expression of stu- dent living, an expression unified, yet diverse. It provides the balance of the collegiate many-sided life. igr ' - j, .X
