Ulbis we Eeliehz ords such as fzziflz, proviffeure, and beliayf, are bruited about rather freely these days. These words are supposed to stop hostile ideologies dead in their tracks. An aura of vagueness surrounds their use, however, for some suppose that, by sucking these words empty of content, they will provoke a greater agreement among men. The result is a faith without conviction, a belief without commitment. e at Calvin have also used these words rather frequently this year. Wle speak of Forward in Fzzillz, United in Faith, fzzillz of ozfrfalherzf. May these phrases never become mere cliches and shibboleths to us. May they ever possess vitality and cogency as we apply them to our Alma Mater, for these phrases nicely describe our living tradition, our binding unity, our future hope. he apostle Paulgives vigor to such words as fzziflz and befify' when he writes, f'The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach, that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be savedf, To make faith and belief live calls for an inti- mate knowledge of the word, commitment of the mind, surrender of the heart to God by his grace, and confession with the lips. Such should be the believing of every one who is or was a Calvin student. Therein we find our unity. his volume of Prism attempts to present the community-unity which should prevail at Calvin. It contends that neither stu- dents or student activities should be completely compartmentized but, rather, that these reflect facets of all of Calvin College and of total student life. Such a proposition has validity only where there exists a binding unity amidst some diversity. At Calvin that unity is supplied by faith, belief, commitment, confession. It is a total surrender of each and all to the word of faith as Paul defined the word. he aim of the college is to give young people an education that is Christian in the larger and deeper sense that all the class work, all the students' intellectual, emotional, and imaginative activ- ities shall be permeated with the spirit and teaching of Chris- tianity.
