CALLED TO THE COLORS We cannot help but pause in the midst of the busyness of school lite to think ol our classmates. friends, sweethearts, and husbands who have left our college halls to serve in the ranks of the armed services of our country. Those who have been called to iight that the tree world might not be destroyed. We think of those in far oft Korea: of those in training camps: of those who have been responsibly stationed in the United States: we think of the many who are yet to be called to the colors. It is the sincere and prayer- iul hope oi this 1952 Prism that our Heavenly Father will watch over them, and that His protecting angle may keep them. Dedication It is with deep respect and sincere appre- ciation that we dedicate this 1952 PRISM to Dr. William Spoelhof. Dr. Spoelhol had been with us as a professor for tive years. During that time we knew him as a pros lessor, as a good professor, a master in his field. We came to admire him for his tire- less energy, in school and in the com- munity. Now he is our president. Taking his job seriously, he has thrown himself with all of his boundless energy into his new position. Looking back over his first year. we can only say, He's done a swell job. We, the students, have come to respect him deeply for his honesty, fair- ness, and justige. We sincerely appreciate his sympathetic and personal interest in our problems. Although he is always busy. he is always lriendly and ready to understand.. . To Dr. William Spoelhol, our President. our friend: May God richly bless a career successfully begun as President of Calvin College.

FOREWORD The year 1951 witnessed the closing of an era of Calvin's history. This year, the year following the Diamond fubilee, we look forward with renewed hope and courage to the future. We cannot stop to congratulate ourselves on our initial progress, but we must strive to make the coming years even more successful. We cannot rest upon the laurels of the past and allow the future to deteriorate. God has given to us unlimited belssings: our college and seminary stand firmly and steadfastly in the principles of Christian higher education established by our forefathers, our ccfmpus has grown, we have been favored with a God-fearing faculty and a vigorous student body. Now we face the future, and we must ever remember to use these blessings to the honor and glory of His name. In the midst of the busyness of planning for the future we would pause to remember those who have left Calvin College to join the ranks of the armed forces. We pray that God will protect and guide them as they so gallantly serve our country in order to provide for us a world of peace and freedom in which we must and will serve our heavenly Father with the tools which we have gained here at Calvin. We, the Prism staff of l952, hope that this yearbook, like a prism, will reflect the true colors of the spectrum of life at Calvin College and Seminary -that it will give a glimpse of our college to those who do not know it, and that it will serve as a fond remembrance to those who are a part of it. 5
