A Message 'From Our President Greetings, fellow students: Your Prism is a record of college days. lt depicts the major influences making up a college education, fn so far as these can be presented pictorially. ln your first reading of this record, you will undoubtedly, overlook many of these influences -initially attracted, as you are, only to the account of your own performance. As you return to these memoirs in following years, they will assume an increasing significance. Time will filter out the inconsequential, and the dominant elements alone Will remain. Your Prism will remind you of friends - real friends -those you cannot forget, friends who have made your life more meaningful and upon whom you also have exercised an educative force. Your Prism will remind you of books - good books - which have patterned your thinking, formed your cultural perspectives, and molded your interests. lt will remind you of your professors who have guided your thinking, made meaningful for you the Christian commitment, and given you a sense of mission in life, You will remember those devotional exercises which aided in provoking a sense of dedication, and in enhancing your spirit of devotion. You will not forget your hours of leisure, of entertainment, of conviviality, which gave you social awareness and taught you social deportment. The Prism will also remind you of the hours of hard work, of drudgery, at times, which evoked a sense of stern duty and discipline. These influences, you must acknowledge, are not separable in a Calvin College education. All are fused together by a unifying rationale. This fact may, possibly, escape you in consulting a pictorial record. This unifying rationale makes Calvin College Calvinistic. Scriptually it is stated thus: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto every good work, ln keeping with this purpose of Christian education, your professors leave with you the admonition of the great Apostle Paul to his star student, Timothy: Guard that which is committed unto thee, turning away from the profane babblings and oppositions of knowledge which is falsely so called, which some professing have erred concerning the faith.
