our president To the students of Calvin, greetingsl You will have observed from your studies in the classroom and Without that King Chaos sits enthroned above the World today. He is swaying a ruthless sceptre over the lives of men. Men are searching feverishly for something that may give them a sense of stability. They have become distrustful of all intellectual, moral, and spiritual judgments. They are aptly depicted by St. Paul as having no hope and Without God in the World. I trust that, in spite of all the deficiencies of your training at Calvin, you may have been directed toward a pattern of thought that will enable you to travel the road of security. lt is the inner chaos of the mind that you may find to be the most disconcerting. And it is at this point that the Calvinistic philosophy may render the most Welcome succor. Woven into this pattern there will be a prominent place for the concept of the divine sovereignty. ln fact, it will color every other thought in your mind. It Will bring about a reassuring integration. It will bring some sense into the crazy quilt of human reaction in this world. It Will put peoples in their proper places. Another characteristic design in your pattern of thought Will be the insignifi- cance of man. The foolishness of human reactions Will not seem foreign at all because it Will appear to be of one piece with the conception of man as being exceedingly sinful. lt will teach us to look for the basic cause for the reign of Chaos in the realm of sin. And it readily suggests a major remedy for the ailments of the World. In this pattern there Willbe a place for the conception of the freedom of man. Let us realize that We shall have to pay for it, and to pay heavily. Let us not sell it for greater efficiency, as the Germans have done, nor for the promise of greater physical Well-being, as the Russians are doing. After all, it is the Truth that can make men free and keep them so. Again, it is the Truth that can lead men in this World of disintegration to an understanding of things as they are and to a sense of security for Which men are striving. Sincerely yours,
