The Senecas held the No. I spot in Region I0 Class A with 86.25 com- puter points and were slated to play Region I2 Class A winners, Coving- ton High School Buccaneers. Lima Shawnee High School was the sight for the showdown. Even though the Senecas were the visit- ing team, they occupied the home side of the field, due to the abun- dance of Calvert fans. Calvert supporters gathered at the high school to give their team a royal sendoff to Lima and the Class A football playoffs. The Senecas spent the night in Lima in order to avoid a rush or add to the tension already present. Kickoff time finally came at 7:30 p.m. on November I6 with the Buccs kicking off. Covington scored the first two times it had possession, while the Senecas managed just one first down in its first two possessions. A 37-yard strike from Dave To- bias to .loe Schmidt jolted the Sen- ecas on the Buccs' third play scrim- mage. With Tobias and Schmidt sharing the load on the ground, the Buccs moved to the Calvert five, where Tobias dropped back and found Schmidt's younger brother. Rick. open for the game's first score to cap a 67 yard drive in eight plays. Tobias' extra point boot was short and wide with 5:56 showing. but Covington had all the points it really needed at 6-O. Calvert picked up its first down following the kickoff when Grant Heminger clicked on an I8-yard pass play to Tim Logsdon, who made a leaping catch. But that proved to be the stron- gest offensive challenge of the first period for Calvert, which moments later was forced to punt. The punt, which carried just I6 yards, provided the Buccs with good field position at the Covington 33 58 Football Sticking with their duo of Schmidt and Tobias, the Buccs sur- prisingly continued to march on the Calvert defense, which had entered the game with a string of five straight shutouts. A I9-yard pickup by Joe Schmidt around the left side and a IO-yard gallop by brother Rick on the first two plays got the Buccs moving. Tobias kept the Calvert defense honest with a I6-yard pass to Rick Schmidt during the 67-yard, IO-play drive. Six more points went up on the Covington side of the board on a one-yard dive by Joe Schmidt three plays into the second period with IQSI left. The try for two by Covington through the air failed and the Buccs held a I2-O advantage. Covington had still another drive in gear before a clipping penalty stalled the effort. Taking over on their own 36, the Senecas put together their only scoring threat of the game as He- minger began to find a weak link in the Covington secondary. With two straight strikes to Chuck Ritzler and Dan Schriner, the Senecas found themselves at the Covington 29. Heminger dropped back for a third straight pass play and hit Larry Ritzler at the nine. Ritzler fell to the turf and had the ball knocked from his grasp. Cov- ington quickly fell on the ball and the official on the play failed to in- dicate a completion or a fumble. After a quick discussion with an- other official. who came from the other side of the field, the play was ruled a fumble and Covington took over at the nine. A Calvert never threatened again. In fact, the Senecas never crossed midfield the second half. The Buccs picked up their final score of the night following an in- terception. After earning a first down on their first possession of the second half, the Senecas looked on as 5-5, I2O pound defensive back Rob Gir- ouard stepped in front of a He- minger aerial and returned it to the Calvert 23 with 6:34 remaining in the third period. Five plays later. Tobias danced his way I7 yards past the Calvert defenders to the endzone. He then hit Rick Schmidt with the two-point conversion, despite being decked by an onrush of Senecas, to end the scoring at 20-O. John Kuhn led the Senecas with 40 yards in I3 carries to just miss the LOW yard plateau for the season by only ll yards. Calvert managed only seven first downs, five of which came through the air on six of I6 completions by Heminger. JU IOR VARSITY FOOTB LL lv QN. . I sf' ,yu-f, ..-.r-'. .v-KW' -, -4 . - .. Coach Paul Miletti, The Seneca golf team was pla- gued with inexperience this year as they had no returning Seniors, but they did have returning underclass- men with a lot of potential. The Sen- ecas also gained some very talented freshmen this season. Coaching the squad was Mr. Paul Clutch Miletti. The team posted a 7-I2 overall and 2-IO S.B.C. record for the sea- son. Opening the season against Hopewell-Loudon, the Senecas were downed I89-l73. The golfers then went on to be defeated by three S.B.C. foes, before coming back and defeating Old Fort l63-I96. Visiting Fremont St. Joe found the Senecas to be having a good night when they were beaten i69- l82. Victory, however, was not to stay with the Senecas as they went on to lose two more matches against Huron and Sandusky St. Mary's. A rematch between the Chief- tians and the Senecas left the Sen- ecas to be the victors. Fostoria High left the Senecas with one more de- feat as they downed them l78-l72. Old Fort and Bettsville brought back some momentum to the team as they were each defeated by mar- gins of approximately 40 strokes apiece. Perkins and Huron returned once again to show the Senecas defeat as once before. Margaretta and Fos- toria, however, were teams that ad- ded to the Seneca win column, and the last two of the regular season. Fremont St. Joe, Sandusky St. Mary's. and Clyde were just three more teams to defeat the Senecas. but the Senecas will be sure to be looking for revenge next season. And who plans the pep rallies, deco- rate: players' houses and school locker rooms? Recognition for these iobs well done sometimes goes unnoticed, but the credit belongs to the Calvert cheerleaders. Cheerleading is just like any other sport. It requires dedication, determination. team- work and countless hours of practice. Varsi- ty and reserve squads begin their season practicing in the summer for up to 2M hours a day. Freshman cheerleaders are chosen in the fall and practice after school. Highlights of the varsity squad's season include cheering at the football state playoff game at Lima, and the basketball district fin- als at Ashland. The cheerleaders raise money for their causes by having bake sales and car washes. The one goal that all the squads have in common is to unite the proud fans in cheer- ing for the Calvert Senecas. F . 1 i 5.5, P Following the tradition of last year's seniors, the Class of '80 cruised to the Bahamas for their Senior Class Trip. Wednesday, April 30. sixty members of the Senior Class chartered two Greyhound buses to Detroit Airport. From there they flew to Atlanta. switched planes and flew nonstop to Orlando, Florida. While in Orlando. they spent a fun-filled day at Disney World with Space Mountain being their main attraction. Friday was a day of travel for the touring seniors. After a four hour bus ride to Miami. they boarded the ship Flavia and set sail at 4 p.m. for Nassau. The remainder of the day was free to investigate the ship, with a delicious meal in the early evening. Saturday it rained, but that didn't spoil the fun for the seniors. They spent the day bargaining with natives at the straw market and visiting one another on the ship. That evening the passengers were greeted by the Captain before being seated at a formal dinner. The last day in Nassau, Sunday, was a day of leisure, Most of the seniors went to lovely Paradise Beach and enjoyed a day in the hot. tropical sun. A crazy dinner party that evening included hats. noise makers and waiters carrying our flaming baked Alaska. The Flavia set sail for Miami earlier that day around 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 5, the Class of l98O was up early and ready to travel home. After catching two buses and a plane ride, the seniors arrived at Calvert at about 6:30 p.m. The Senior Class Trip to Nassau will always be a great memory for the Class of '80.
