With full right the Church promoter letferr, rcience, art, in so far af necerrafgf or helpful to Chriftian education, in addition to her work for salvation of .roulrj founding and maintaining rchoolr and inrtitutionf adapted to every hranch of learning and degree of culture. Piur XI Bishop Rehring helps to save the souls of his flock by promoting education. He does this through his letters to the people and through the schools which he founds and main- tains. Through the efforts of the Bishop the Toledo diocese has many elementary schools and high schools. It was through the Bishop that the Calvert High School building was erected and through him that it is maintained. Because ot him Calvert has its wonderful principal and a well- educated faculty large enough to teach Calvert's growing student body. Although Bishop Rehring has many tasks, he takes time out each Spring to honor Cal- vert's graduation with his presence. The students of Calvert are grateful for the many blessings that come to them from our Most Reverend Bishop George J. Rehring. FACULTY Perfect schools are the result not so much of good methods as of good oooho L i r Vincipazl REV. EDWARD C. DUNN, M.A., S.T.L. But Cbri.rt'.r and his dixciplu' word he .fought to teach, and fmt be followed what be taught These words express the feeling that the students of Calvert have for Father Dunn. Because of 1:ather's way of teaching religion-by example-he has contributed immensely toward making us stronger members of the Catholic iaith. ..6- AJJZJZJWZ Principal A friend and consultant is Father Ringholz. When advice is needed or when a student just wants someone to talk to, Father will be there. Calvert is indeed fortunate to have Father Ringholz because of his unseltishness, his pleasantness, and his sincerity. He helps us plan our proms and cheers for our teams. The seniors and the juniors will always re- member Father's religion classes where he helped us to understand better our Catholic religion. The sophomores and freshmen are looking forward to the years that are coming. Rev. Benedict E. Ringholz, B.A. fBmm' of Firm! Control The students of Calvert, with deepest sincerity, wish to thank Monsignor R. I. Kinnane and Monsignor Richard J. Gabel for having given us so many means to become good mem- bers ot the Mystical Body of Christ. Monsignor Kinnane and Monsignor Gabel have dedicated their lives to giving us every possible opportunity to reach the goal in life which God has set for us. They provided us with Catholic grade schools where we began to develop spiritually, intellectually, and socially. They aided us further by financing part of our tuition at Calvert. They help us also by their prayers. We know that what they have done for us will some day be tully rewarded by God. Right now we can do nothing more than express our appreciation and deep thanks to both Monsignor Kinnane and Monsignor Gabel. Rt. Rev. Msgr. R. I. Kinnane Rt. Rev. Msgr. Richard J. All of these form part ot the students' religious growth and give them additional instructions in religion. This year's retreat opened with Mass on Wednesday, January 22, and lasted till January 24. Each day after Mass the students went to conferences where they were given talks by the retreat masters on the teachings ot the Church. Father Schil1's daily talks to the juniors and seniors were on the importance of sanctitying grace in our lives, obedience, purity, and other virtues. Their un- ceasing hard work and generous giving up of their free time is greatly appreciated by the whole student body, The rest of the seniors on the yearbook staff have contributed their share of hard work, time, thought, and worries to the success cf the Calvertana. But many hours of enjoyment were also de- rived from the making of the book. Years from now, as they look through the pages of their book, the graduates will be able to relive their joys, sorrows, and recall their old friendships. And so, out of all this work comes the finished product, a yearbook full of memories of the happiest years of a person's life. -42- N353 E ,- 'P P22 'S i Anne Wade. During these years Mr. Zalar has done a fine job in turning out good athletes. When he starts with his boys in their freshman year he starts with fundamentals, and through the years he keeps improving them until they are finished products in their senior year. To Zip this finished product need not be a dazzling college prospect, but a young man who has learned to take orders and work with others in a sportsmanlike manner. Whether Zip is rushing the boys out of the fieldhouse tor practice, putting them through a rough practice, or working with them in the classroom or shop, he does it with concern and interest. Those who have known Zip have learned to appreciate him for what he is, a true builder of men. MR. KARL ZALAR Mr. Joseph Kukoy has done a fine job in his first year as head basketball coach, finishing the season with a praiseworthy 11-4 record. Coach Kukoy is a tireless worker for the betterment of his boys. In his coaching he stresses keen ball-handling and often takes to the floor to demonstrate his theories of play. To Joe , an asset to a team is the p1ayer's obedience to the training rules which will result in his top physical condition. Mr. Kukoy's interests are not limited only to the cage game. He still takes a great interest in the football team. Last season he helped Zip with the line and was always ready with a helping hand for the backfield. He will always be remembered by the grid players as the sprint leader, and for his famous words of just one more! ,1 MR. JOSEPH KUKOY Assisting head coach Zalar in football and coach Kukoy in basketball was Mr. Paul Miletti, who joined the coaching staff this year. In football Mr. Miletti coached the backfield and turned out a fine running team. In basketball he taught the reserves and did a tremendous job by building one of the best teams in years. In only one year, through his willingness to help and his understanding of boys, Mr. Miletti has won the respect and con- fidence of all those whom he has taught. To you, coach, we say thanks for doing your part toward training us to be better men in the future. MR. PAUL MILETTI 49 Members of Calvert's 1957 football squad are: First Row: .lames Omlor, Iames Croy, Iames France, Thomas Shultz, Michael Felter, Iames Nllright, David Leahy, David Kuntz, .Iames Terry, Kenneth Colatruglio, Iohn Kirian, Michael Hart. GRID 551450 OF '57 From the viewpoint of local grid stand- ings, the 1957 record of our Calvert Senecas may not be as impressive as those of former yearsy however, we believe that the de- velopment of team loyalty, cooperation, and the spirit of never-say-die was shown by our 1957 football team. Records are made and records are broken, but of this year's team it can be said that they were victorious in achieving team spirit and the will to give their best. As the season came to an end, the record was three wins and five losses. Wins were over Fremont St. Joseph, Holland, and Nor- walk St. Paul. Heartbreakers were lost to Sandusky St. Mary's, Delphos St. John, Crestline, Bucyrus, and Toledo St. Francis. Although there were eight seniors on the team, only five were on the first team. McCrory, Seislove, and Farley were three year lettermen. Ring and McNulty were two year lettermen. The seniors receiving letters this year were Schoen, O'Connell, and Theis. James Ding-Dong Ring was a rough and ready man playing hard in the front lines for the Fenecas. James Mac McNulty, the other tackle. was one of the biggest men on the team and did a great job at his posiilon. Eugene Killer Schoen did a fine iob of filling in on defense in the front lines for Calvert. David Pixie Seislove was a tuff deter- mined guard who always gave everything he had right up to the final gun. Gilman Had Farley, a six foot end, did a tremendous job of catching passes and stopping end runs. Timothy Dutch O'Connell never gave up his desire to get in there and score for the Senecas. William Bill Theis was always willing to get in on defense and tight hard. Michael Turk McCrory was a hard- fighting and hard-hitting fullback for the Senecas. Under classmen receiving letters this year were: juniors, James Saad, Robert Altwies, Daniel McGowan, John Sauber, Michael Huffmon, and Frank Mangiolal sophomores, David Masella, James Wright, Ronald Dandurand, Ronald Mathias, and James Gillig. With these eleven men, the next years' seasons look promising. mn Q, . x X Xxx ' 5 X X' Q5 xv ww Q , we xv. V' -N ,... R X! 'xx . Buzz has been a member of the varsity since his junior year. During the '57-'58 season he was on the starting tive and chalked up a total of 79 points. Gil Farley, center, proved to be quite an asset to the squad. Gill could sink hook shots with either hand and could sink hooks shots from either corner ot the court. Ou Dr Richard Leahy Mrs. Richard Wagner Mary Ellen Meier Alariirii H i cgbli ,glam The annual Alumni Day took place Sunday, June 2, 1957. As has been the custom in the past, the day started with a High Mass offered for all living and deceased members of the Alumni and their families. Alumni officers attended the Mass, after which a reunion was held for members of the Alumni and their families. Retiring president Thomas Fleck spoke briefly to the group and announced the new officers as follows, Dr. Richard Leahy, presi- dent, Mrs. Richard Wagner, vice-president, James Boehler, treasurer, and Mary Ellen Meier, secretary. That evening members of the Class of 1932 were honored at a dinner in the school cafe- teria honoring their 25th anniversary. Traditional Dance School Days was the theme used for the Alumni Dance, a traditional event which took place over the Labor Day weekend. Held on Saturday evening, August 31, 1957, at Meadow- brook Ballroom, this dance, the most successful one yet, was attended by approximately 500 alumni members and their guests. Special guests of the evening were the Rev. Edward C. Dunn and the Rev. Benedict Ringholz. Alumni Projerts In the past some financial assistance has been offered to the school, provided by the limited income from the annual dues and dance profits. This money was used to purchase books, fixtures, files, and other necessary equipment for the library. This year, besides the financial assistance given to the library and Sister Charlotte, we were asked to help defray the expense of additional folding bleachers in the gym. In order to build a fund for this and for other future purposes, we abolished dues and established a yearly alumni contribution. The bleacher project was the goal of the 1958 Alumni Fund. Career Day Highlighting the 1957-58 year was the Career Day held March 2, 1958, at Calvert. The program, consisted of 15 representatives of various businesses and professions who gave in- formative speeches to the students interested in the speakers' subjects. Father Dunn and the Alumni worked together to make this program the success that it was. The officers wish to thank Father Dunn for his generous assistance with our projects dur- ing the year.
