RTANA Pabhkhea' by The Sembr dass Calvert liqgfh School Tlfhh, Ohlb fo ewo a' Being freshmen is one of the most difficult positions we will ever have in life. It's the first really big step we must take in our lives, we enter a different school, meet different people, make adjustments to a schedule, new subjects and teachers, and prepare ourselves for our vocation in life. Just as the first year as a student at Calvert was difficult for us, so it is for a teacher. When our class of 1956 faced that first year there was also a teacher, who, in a way, had to make the same step. Having this in common with our class, besides being our Religion instructor for three of our four years at Calvert, he became our friend, sticking by us in our difficulties and sharing in our activities. Our prom, class parties, play, and operetta were all ex- amples of the many events he helped us with, not iust with supervision, but by doing more than his share. This past school year, when we've all had worries and problems concerning our future, we again went to him for help. This year, when everyone is paying tribute to Pope Pius XII on the occasion of his eightieth birthday and the seven- teenth anniversary of his coronation as Pope, we wish to pay our tribute to another representative of Christ. At Cal- vert, we look upon him as the Catholics of the world look upon the Pope-as a true friend and counsellor whose shin- ing example greatly influences our spiritual lives. We, the class of 1956, wish to express our sincere thanks to Father Dunn, our assistant principal, by praying for him and by dedicating to him this volume of the Calvertana. pfdlkdflon 'fem ,wx Vi y' A iw .. D. By being present at the Commencement exercises, and presenting the diplomas to the honored seniors, His Excellency, the Most Reverend George J. Rehring, D.D., Bishop ot Toledo, displays a sincere interest in the students of Calvert. Moreover, to the student plac- ing highest in a competitive Religion test, he awards the Bishop's Cross. He expresses by these actions, and also through his letters to the faithful, his interest in them and his concern tor their welfare. Because we realize how busy he is, and because we are grateful for his concern for us, the students oi Calvert take this opportunity to thank our Bishop for all he is doing and has done for Calvert and its students. ..4- acuity 1 1 :' Fi 3, Q. 5 :L , . Helping students with homework problems, selecting subjects best suited to a student's ability, directing girls and boys to a right vocation, all are part of a busy day in Father Shenk's lite at Calvert. Father is an ardent supporter ot school actitivites such as the prom, play, operetta, Cal- vert News, Calvertana, Band, athletics and the school clubs. His main interest lies, however, in the students' spiritual lite. Some ot the ways that Father increases devotion to Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin, and the saints are by providing the students with an annually conducted three-day retreat, by re-arranging the schedule so that students can attend Mass and receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays, and by personally helping them with any problem, no matter how small, they may have. The reason behind Father's great interest in the students' spiritual welfare is Father's deep devotion to the Catholic faith. The students all thank Father for his sincere interest and help. - 6 - flsslktanr Pflllflpdf Assisting Father Shenk is the difficult task ot running a school is our assistant principal, Father Dunn. Besides the regular positions of senior Re- ligion instructor and director of the penalty period, Father also served as one of the direc- tors of the operetta and the senior play, and aided the different classes with their mission parties. One might think he wouldn't have any time left, but never a day passes when he isn't with a student, either helping him, discussing his problems, or listening to the latest news con- cerning extracurricular activities. A. ed 'O Father Dum- Board of Ffkcal fonfrol From the earliest days of our childhood we have always been taken into the friendship of our pastors, who baptized us, heard our first confession, and gave us our first Holy Communion. Monsignor Kinnane and Monsignor Gabel have provided us with fine elementary schools and now with a brand new high school. Realizing the problems that both pastors face be- cause of their own building program makes us more than ever grateful for the financial assistance given the Calvert students. When we realize that our parishes provide the larger portion of the tuition for each of us, we can see that our pastors wish to give us the finest Catholic education. The students ot Calvert High School wish to express to Monsignor Kinnane and Monsig- nor Gabel their sincere thanks tor the guidance and interest that they have always shown from our earliest years. HERINGHAUS Wee Club Dkecror With the greatest happiness, Calvert welcomed back Fathei Heringhaus to direct the Glee Club this year. But it must have been with even more joy to the fortunate alumni, who sang to the move- ment ot his baton tor 17 years, to see the present student body again under his direc- tion. Father's kindness and gener- osity brought him all the dist- ance from North Auburn, where he was pastor, and later from Momineetown to direct the operetta, Babes in Toyland. W i t h tew experienced voices, Father Heringhaus, worked many hours training tor the production. Without his capable leadership and the confidence the students have in him, the operetta would not have been such a success. Through patience and hard work, the co-editors have produced a yearbook that will live forever in the hearts of every member of the senior class. The Cal- vertana holds the memories of all the happy events that will always remain the storehouse of treasures for the graduating class. 4l M...,...f The 6a ve and The work on the Calvertana began back in January when the seniors solicited patrons to support it. The enthusiastic group, eager for the best yearbook ever, collected enough money for a padded cover, the first one in eight years. When the patron drive ended, the co-operation didn't cease, tor many gave up study halls and time outside school for the mounting of pictures, writing articles and captions, do- ing the art work and planning the pages. This is all rewarded when the 1956 volume of the Calvertana comes out, different from other years in its pastel blue cover, to remind them not only of the work put into it, but also of the good times known at Calvert as students. Business Managers B u s i n e s s Managers, Patricia S t o f e r and Thomas Shook, put in many hours keeping a record of the money and pasting down the cards with the signatures of the patrons. KARL ZALAR MR. JOSEPH KUKOY enecas' Coaches Mr. Zalar has now been head coach at Calvert for seven years. In both sports he has com- piled an excellent record. His basketball and football records are both well over the sow mark in games won. He has certainly done his best to give Calvert a high rating in the Athletic Department. Zip',' never misses the opportunity to congratulate the team, if the boys have come through with a fine performance. Even if the team went down to defeat, but still tried hard and gave the opposing team a rough battle, Zip would always give the team a good word. In 1953, by far the best season in athletics in the history of Calvert, Mr. Zalar's team compiled amazing records in both sports. The football squad had an excellent 8-1 record, while its most noticeable victory was its 53-6 win over Columbian in the City Championship. The basketball squad had a great 17-3 mark. The boys who have played under Coach Zalar have always looked up to him for guid- ance on and off the football field and basketball court. He will always listen to them and try to straighten out their difficulties. Zip will long be remembered by his players for the great work he has done to help them develop strong characters. The Senecas' head coach, Karl Zalar, was assisted in basketball and football by .lo Kukoy. This year, Mr. Kukoy will complete his third year as the Reserve coach on the court and backfield coach on the gridiron. The Reserves, under Mr. Kukoy's care and guidance, stacked up a 4 7 record How their losses were usually by a few points. The reason for their fine display of fight drilled into them by Mr. Kukoy's two important views of a good team that is, determine and stamina. This was true in football as well as basketball. As backfield coach Mr Kukoy tu out a fine running backfield by steady training and untiring effort in keeping the moving. Kukoy, who was always willing to give up his time for the betterment of his athl should be congratulated for his fine efforts in both sports. During his time at Calvert, Joe has ,successfully won the admiration of all those came under his coaching. - 50 1 FOURTH ROW: Daniel Fullerton, Daniel Leahy, Anthony San Gregory, Michael Wagner, David Stevenson, Roger Welter, Eugene Stetanclli, Iames Poignon, Iohn Leahy, THIRD ROW: Coach Karl Zalar, George Houck, Thomas Huss, David Seislove, Richard Dcmdurand, Iohn Gattori, Iames Ring, Paul Boes, Assistant Coach Ioseph Kukoy. The Senecas' 155 WM Record At the start of the season Zip Zalar and Joe Kukoy were faced with the problem ot building a team tor the Senecas from seven returning lettermen. From these, tive were linemen and two were backtield, men whose roles were mostly defensive. From this supposedly weak ottensive team came these surprising totals. Calvert out- scored its opponents 129-102 points. Only once were the Senecas held scoreless, while the Zalarmen kept two opponents from crossing the final white stripe, and allowed only one team to cross it more than three times. Calvert's wins were over Delphos St. John 7-0, Holland 29-6, and Mount Blanchard 61-O. Its losses were to Bucyrus 19-O, Sandusky St. Mary's 20-16, Port Clinton 13-7, and Fre- mont St. .loseph's 26-6. Calvert dropped the city championship game to Columbian in a tight heartbreaking 18-13 setback. The senior lettermen were Anthony San Gregory, David Stevenson, Eugene Stet- anelli, James Poignon, Roger Welter, and Michael Wagner. San Gregory a haltback, showed great determination in hitting the line and digging out that extra yardage. Stevenson, at end, was always downtield to spring a backtield man loose with a vicious block, or snag that long pass. Showing great speed, Stetanelli ground out yardage by hitting the line, and sweep- ing the ends for long gains. Most valuable award went to Michael XIVBQHSI, who displayed outstanding work at linebacker, and starred at center on offense. Co-captain awards were given to James Poignon and Roger Welter. Poignon a fullback, showed a great stamina by pounding the line tor extra yard- age, and dropping opposing backs with smashing tackles. 'VVelter, at quarterback, showed excellent field leadership in calling plays or throwing long passes, while his hard tackling stood out on defense. Calvert's future shines brightly, tor a total of 18 lettermen are returning tor what looks like a very strong season. Ot these thirteen are juniors and tive are sophomores. . ' ' V, ,::. Basketball Rewkw The final results of Calvert's '55-'56 basketball season were not too impressive, but the tabulations will not reveal the fight, determination, and work of these green Senecas. As only one letterman returned for basketball, '55-'56 was a year of rebuilding. Calvert took only one game in eleven out ings. The lone win was over Mt. Zion. The total over-all points that the opponents made were 912 to the Senecas' 6355 they averaged 82 points a game to the Zalarmen's 53. Shooting from the foul line, the opponents netted 194 points, while Calvert swished the nets for 139. Drawing Port Clinton as the first game in the Class A Tournament, the Senecas were defeated 72-60. At the half time of the tournament game, the Zalarmen trailed by only one po by foul shots. Top scoring honors went to junior forward Daniel Moran, who tallied 152 points, while his teammate, Gilman Farley, sophomore center, netted 132 markers. Roger Welter, senior guard, also hit the three figures column with 114 points. int as the score stood 38-37. But in the closing seconds of the game, Calvert was outscored Varsity fa e Record Nov. Sembr Cagers Although lacking height, Roger Welter, senior guard, made up for it by his speed and his ability to shoot from out. Rog, a member of the varsity since his sophomore year, was a good scrapper on defense. He could constantly steal the ball from the opponents, when they were dribbling down the floor. Rog was also noted for being third high scorer on the team with 114 points. By his fine play, Bog certainly was a valuable man on the starting five. Bill Black, senior forward and a member of the first five, with his speed, shooting ability, and rebounding was a real asset to the team. VVhen the going was tough, he would never give up. Bill was also noted tor his driving in ability. He would sometimes get the ball and dribble all the way down the floor and lay it in. Bill was fourth leading scorer on the team with 97 points. The members ot the team thought enough ot Bill to elect him captain of this year's Most Valuable Elected most valuable player ot Calvert's basketball squad was junior forward, Dan Moran. He was not only high scorer for the Senecas this year, but also tops in the rebound department. Dan could do anything on the hardcourt. l-le could take the ball down the floor, play the torward position, and was sometimes used in the pivot. The day began with the Alumni officers attending High Mass celebrated by the Rev. Joseph D. Shenk, principal, in the Ursuline Chapel. This Mass was offered for the living and deceased members of the Alumni As- sociation. During the afternoon many members of the Alumni and their families attended the annual reunion, held in Calvert's new build- ing. The afternoon was spent informally and was highlighted by the presence of Msgr. Anthony J. Gallagher who presided at Bene- diction. Members of the Class of 1930 renewed old memories at dinner held in the school cafe- teria on Sunday evening. OFFICERS ELECTED Officers elected at the annual reunion, al- ways held the first Sunday after graduation, were Dr. Paul J. France, president, Miss Kathleen Warnement, vice-president, Miss Mary Tomecek, secretary, and Mr. Robert Burger, treasurer. SUMMER DANCE Blue and white decorated Meadowbrook Ballroom September 3, 1955, for one of the most successful Alumni dances ever held. Well over 250 members and their guests at- tended this traditional affair always held the Friday before Labor Day. Father Shenk, Father Dunn, and Father Dobmeyer were special gusets. ALUMNI CERTIFICATES A permanent Alumni certificate or card signifying membership in the Calvert Alumni Association has been inaugurated and printed. At present, these will be signed and presented to the members of each graduating class. CLASS SECRETARIES Selection and appointment of class secre- taries has been accomplished during the past year. The purpose of such action is to improve the efficiency of the Alumni officers in carrying out their duties in an ever- enlarging group. The Calvert Alumni As- sociation as of June, 1956, totals 1854. LIBRARY BENEFITS The Alumni Association has continued to aid financially its permanent project, the Calvert Library Fund.
