Our mothers heard our first words, taught us our first prayers, saw us leave for our first day of school, and helped us when our homework seemed too difficult. Our fathers earned the money for our first pair of shoes, carried us on their shoulders, were pleased at our good report cards, and helped us grow into good Catholics and good citizens. Although we cannot repay their time or material sacrifices, we hope that we can be the kind of young men and women that our parents wish us to be, and in such a way insure them that their efforts have not been in vain, but that they have co-operated with God to increase the population of our future eternal Home. Exemplifying our Heavenly Father and our Blessed Mother, our parents have been our best helpers, our most valued counselors, and our most cherished friends throughout childhood, grade school, and high school years. f il- w , , ,- . 6 -s o gferg. REHRING, D.D. Though the students at Calvert are a small part ot Bishop Rehring's tlock, they feel very happy that he honors them with his presence at their Graduation Exercises. They know that a Bishop has many duties and responsibilities and so they greatly appreciate the kind- ness ot their own Bishop in following a precedent begun by Cardinal Stritch. Even though the boys and girls ot Calvert know their Bishop mainly through his letters to his people, they see in these letters a follower of Our Lord- a kind, considerate, ever watchful shepherd, a true lover ot souls. As a shepherd guards his sheep, so Bishop Rehring guards his people. The Calvert students pledge themselves to be true and loyal to their Bishop and sincerely thank him for his spiritual guidance. 4 Fava fy fm Emma zygw egg- XNXYXNNNXQQN WXX NWXWWXXNWlKXkWWQEk0SNkXWkW CQaam,Zm.nA49 L9 'Mama I W S, fx !ZZ v WD 1 . Although burdened with the many duties of running a school, Father Shenk can always find time to help individual students with their personal problems. It doesn't take him long, in the beginning of each school year, to learn the name of each freshman. Always available, Father Shenk is deeply concerned with each person's welfare, and provides a sate shelter in the storms of school life. Though the students' days are from 8200 a.m. until 3200 p.rn., Father's work isn't quite so short. Tackling the problems that are always present to beset a principal, he works from early until late. Nor do his labors cease with the advent of summer. Although the classrooms are silent during the vacation, Father's office is humming with activity. He must use this time to make out a schedule for each student for the coming year. Perhaps his tasks have been a little pleasanter this year, since they were carried out in a bright new school. Remembering the many sacrifices Father has made and the countless hours he has spent to make their high school days happy and profitable ones, the student body will be forever grateful to their principal, Father Shenk. 6 Assistant Pnhcjval There is someone at Calvert who is every student's friend. He has a knack for ironing out complications and can be counted on to listen enthusiastically to everything from the latest parties to the newest problems. At a cheer rally, the student body seems to catch some of his pep and boundless Calvert Spirit. Although in penalty period he is firm about correcting students' faults, and making them realize the necessity of co-operation and obedience, afterwards you often find him the center of a group of laughing, chattering students. Calvert students feel that he is just like one of them. This is Father Dunn, our assistant l principal. REV. EDWARD C. DUNN, M.A. Board of Fllvcal Control In the completed unit of Calvert High School, Monsignor Raphael I. Kinnane, pastor of St. Mary's and Monsignor Richard J. Gabel, pastor of St. .loseph's, behold the goal of their tireless effort and unflinching self-sacrifice. We, the students, too, see the fruit of their labors and daily enjoy its benefits. If it were not for these priests and their generous parishioners, our priceless school would yet be nothing but a fantasy on paper. To the pastors of our respective parishes we, the recipients of their good works, extend our sincerest appreciation and thanks for the opportunity to attend Calvert and to continue a Catholic education. Both Monsignor Kinnane and Monsignor Gabel have a very personal interest in every student of Calvert. Each one is an individual with a soul destined for heaven. Their ambition and their desire is to develop each soul into a perfect mirror of Christ. We are grateful to Msgr. Kinnane and Msgr. Gabel not only for their assistance in our trials and tribulations, but also for their kind encouragement. we Xe!! 'ns RT. REV. MSGR. R. I, KINNANE RT. REV. MSGR. R. J. GABEL S.T.D., V.G., P.A. Calvert's first win came over Holland with an impressive 25-7 victory. The other victory was over Lima St. Roseg it was a rugged game which the Senecas won 14-7. The decisions the Senecas dropped were: Toledo Clay 34-14, Kenton 20-14, Columbian 27-7, Fremont 34-20, Port Clinton 26-19, and Sandusky 20-19. Philip Falter received the Most Valuable Player award for his outstanding defensive work. On offense he showed his terrific speed both on the line and in the backfield. Co-Captain awards went to Joseph Migliori and Robert Leahy. Although Migliori missed the last two games, the previous ones showed his ability as a fullback. Robert Leahy won his award by his constant ruggedness at the tackle position. Daniel Moran, Daniel Fullerton, David Stevenson, and Edward Ferstler were the main underclass players. Because ot Gene's great jumping ability tor rebounds, he was nicknamed Kangaroo . His great shots oft his hips and his sportsmanship on and oft the hardcourt will always be remembered by the squad. Gene finished the season with a 7 point average per game. Mig , our 6 foot guard, led the scoring column in the '54-'55 season with a grand total of 218 points. With his accurate shots from mid-floor, Joe was always there to raise that score. Here's a lad Calvert will never forget in the many years to come. Sometimes known as Teabags , Mike was an asset to the team. His good humor and team spirit never tailed when the team needed a boost. In the eyes ot the cagers and the students, Mike Maiberger was a great morale builder. Crash , the name given to him by his teammates, is the Irish lad who gave spark to the team. When the spirits were down, he always raised their hopes and boosted them on. When the crowd gave out with that Take it! take it away! he was there to oblige. Known to most ot the students as Red , with his hard running and his fast-dribbling, Phil did his part on the hardcourt. His ability to dump the ball when the ball needed dump- ing will always be remembered by the Senecas' fans. Ending the season, Phil had a total of 206 points. The Mass was offered for the living and deceased members of the Alumni Association. Father Shenk also presided at Benediction in the afternoon. Members of the classes of 1927 and 1947 renewed old memories with a picnic at Hedges Boyer Park and a dance at the Bel-Aire Club. OFFICERS ELECTED Alumni officers elected at the annual reunion were Patrick Dell, president, Mrs. Edmund Kuebler, vice-president, Gene Phillips, treasurer, and Margaret Mary Kramer, secretary. ALUMNI ACTIVITIES The Alumni inaugurated as a permanent project for the association, the contributing annually of a sum of money to the school to be used as a library fund. During the past year, the association also made an additional fund available for items to be selected by Father Shenk. On the occasion of the elevation of Calvert's first principal, Father Gallagher, to the rank of Domestic Prelate, a spiritual bouquet and a bugia were presented to Msgr. Gallagher, on behalf of the alumni who attended Calvert during those years he spent building the reputa- tion the school is so fortunate to possess today. SUMMER DANCE Charles Hasser and his orchestra provided the music for over 300 alumni and their guests at the traditional summer dance at Meadowbrook Ballroom, September 4, 1954.
