NINETFEN I-'iffy-I-'OUR PM The Calverfana TIFF N 01910 to Marian Year Prayer n, if 21 2 'S 2 Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly Beauty, and impelled by thefanxieties of the world, we cast our- selves into your arms, O Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side. Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your Concep- tion until the day on which, after your Assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe. O crystal Fountain of iaith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lilyof all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! O Conqueress ot evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave bf hell! O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart in this year dedicated to you. 'Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the'poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the' attraction of Christian goodness. In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recog' nize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace. r- r i Receive, O Most Sweet Mother, our 'humble supplica- tions, and above all obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which Loday is sung on earth around your altar: You are all beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, lyou are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amen. as-.W 'evra' im Q',if,q,,,g,0,':.c,,'.,, M., gw acrp 4' Aa . Piehring, bishop ot the Toledo diocese, is our spiritual leader. His devotion to his tasks is exemplified in his letters to the diocese. Love of Mary, especially during the Marian Year, is demonstrated by special feast days, special prayers, and special blessings which he recommends. He urges us not to neglect our opportunities to improve our spiritual life. He published lists of all of the indulgences which could be gained during the Marian Year. To the sick he sent a special letter urging them to unite their suffering with those ot Mary. All of us were urged to spend a special day of prayer tor those who, because ot persecution, were unable to give public devotion to Mary. We sincerely hope and pray that the devotion to Mary, being fostered during the Marian Year, will continue under the inspiring leadership of Bishop Rehring. faculty 1 l ! O Virgin Mother of my God, Give me the grace to say, I give mysef to You, my Lordv As you said on your Presentation Day. S Pflllffbdf REV. JOSEPH D. SHENK, M. A., B. S. E. During the last tour years, Father Shenk, our principal, has spent the greater part of his time providing tor the spiritual and educational needs of the Calvert students. Spiritually, Father Shenk has done all in his power to guide the students in the right path- the path ot true Christian living. Temporally, Father has considered every detail of our new school so that all would be in ex- cellent condition when the new building openedg he spent many hours with the regular workers and thus gave this year's graduating class a few weeks in the new Calvert. We realize that teaching, supervising the construction ot the new Calvert, and taking a personal interest in every student at Calvert is a real job, but Father Shenk has gladly given his time and effort in making our school days really worth-while. We wish to thank Father Shenk for truly being a Father to us. 6 Asslkfanf Pfl7lC6Ddf Father Dunn, humorous and sincere, goes about his work very quietly. His personality is such that it a student needs advice on a problem, small or large, he feels free to go to Father. He knows Father is willing to go out of his way to help the students, whether they are freshmen or seniors. Father Dunn's classes in Religion come first, but he still takes an active interest in all the extra-curricular activities. Our assistant principal finds time to take care of each individual person. The students of Calvert are greatly indebted to our assistant principal, Father Dunn, for the aid he has given us in spiritual and temporal affairs. REV. EDWARD C. DUNN, M. A. Board of flf5'Cdf fonfrol Calvert students owe the pastors of St. Mary's and St. .loseph's Parishes a deep debt of gratitude for the interest that they have shown towards our almost-completed Calvert. Not only are our pastors concerned with the structure of the new building, but also they are attentive to the needs of Calvert students, especially their spiritual welfare. Recently Monsignor Kinnane and Father Gabel revealed their personal interest in the build- ing by participating in the inspection of it. Continually requesting financial aid from their parishes, they have been providing the means that kept our high school operating smoothly and made the dream of a new building a reality. We, the students of Calvert, wish to thank our pastors for their continued help and hope that their efforts in our behalf were not in vain. v RT. REV. MSGR. R. I. KININANE REV. RICHARD J. GABEL S. T. One of the oldest traditions at Calvert is that the highest honor that can be won by any girl or boy is that of crowning Our Lady's statue at the May Crowning ceremony. Those who have maintained a B+ average in Religion and character rating for four years are candidates for election to this honor. During this religious ceremony, held in the Italian court,, Louis Crist and Louisa Machaels placed the wreath of roses on Our Lady's head. Naturally, a great deal of hard work goes into this high school album. The seniors have sacrificed precious time for the writing ot sports and features and in the mounting of the pictures. Two students who have proved themselves more than worthy of the co-editorship are Aleta Grillot and Leo Depinet. They have had a difficult task directing the writing of the yearbook. but they always found the time and found it gladly. The top team in the patron drive for the Calvertana, Ann Ferrall and Audrey Lavoe, are proudly making returns to the business managers, Mary Jo Schlachter and Ted Singleton. Ann and Audrey have solictcd 59550. This year Zip gave Calvert a football and basketball team to be proud of. With 11 letter- men he shaped out a rugged football team that walked oft with 8 wins and only 1 defeat, while in basketball he led his squad to a 17-3 record. Assisting Mr. Zalar as backtield coach and reserve squad basketball coach is Mr. Joseph Kukoy, a new man on the staff. Joe's fine personality made him liked by everyone and many of the athletes came to him for advice on how to better themselves. As it looks, Joe has a fine coaching career ahead of him. Mr. Steve Ecos was again at Calvert to assist Mr. Zalar in handling the chores of shaping up the line in football. And that he did, as Calvert had one of the strongest and fastest lines in a long time. ffzeerleaders At every game it's the, Go, Team, yell of the cheerleaders that puts Vim and vigor into the specta- tors as well as the team. All this year, Calvert's four cheerleaders could be heard leading yells even long after the games were over. Besides the large percentage ot wins, the gridders entered some of the most impressive scores in the school's history. After failing to break the jinx of the preview game, the Senecas picked themselves up by scalping Galion 27-0. The only black mark on the record was the 14-0 loss to Toledo Clay, which now has a win streak of 30 games. After this defeat, the Senecas settled down for the rest of the season with wins over Sandusky St. Mary's 33-6, Port Clinton 40-7, Fostoria St. Wendelin's 39-6, Fremont St. Joe's 14-O, Lima St. Rose 14-O, Kenton 23-0, and, as a final touch, a city-championship win over Tiffin Columbian 53-6. Only through teamwork could such achievements as these be made. Even though Denny Bridinger, the over 200 pound fullback, was chcsen by the players the most valuable player, the whole team worked like a well-made machine. Each man was extremely valuable as is evident by the election of all the seniors as co-captains. The senior co-captains are Jim Meier, Dave Dow, Bill Rohrbach, Dick Sullivan, Bobby Amlin, Dick Theis, Bill Dell, Louie Crist, Bud Phillips, Tom Felter, Dave Omlor, Jim Rochester, and Denny Bridinger. Adding depth to the squad were the underclassmen who proved to be an asset to the team. Although there were only two underclassmen, Bob Leahy and Tom Zahn, on the starting 11, all ot them received valuable experience. Despite the loss of 14 lettermen, the team next year should be hard to beat. Underclass lettermen include Butch Distel, .lim Masella, Jim Fullerton, Joe Migliori, Phil Falter, Bob Leahy, Tom Zahn, Joe Scherger, and John Lutz, all juniors. The team had another valuable man who never got into the game, except in spirit, or never got his name in the paper. This man is manager Terry Hiester. Always on the spot whenever he was needed, Terry proved a real asset to the team. 51 44 cf? ff tt who HG evil W v xo V+ KA ,,.! 3,fp , RRS , ago fs' C11 6 'Q NA ex 4' xzgjkqi 6? -H-H+'+ -0 if 9Pfix1'P'N U Q' , H J ,,.,., --,: A x y F 5, A i Lx. : W ' QA A , E, cf-fucx ,, v ,, Bun' V lf N U TE. Basketball Playing a high scoring, fast break type of ball, the '53-'54 Seneca cagers turned in the best sea- son record in the history of Calvert by winning 17 and losing but 3. This year's team also was the first Calvert team ever to play in its own gymnasiumj it well deserved this honor as the team won all 9 of its home court games. The Senecas proved they had what it takes when they went to the Sandusky Tournament and knocked off kingpin Bellevue and 2nd seeded Sandusky. But it was a rough Fremont Ross who defeated the Senecas in the finals of the sectional tournament. A well-rounded scoring punch kept the Z-Men in all the way, as Coach Zalar had five good shooters who could score almost at will. Racking up a season's total ot 1517 points to their opponents' 1208, the Senecas averaged 76 points per game with 60 scored against them. This year's 17 wins and 3 losses is the record for the future Calvert teams to beat. Seneca Cagers Among the greatest of the great belongs Bill Rohrbach 6'6 . A three year letterman, most valuable player in his junior and senior years, 1st team all-tournament, and 1st team All-Ohio are the honors Bill has earned. In Bob Amlin Calvert loses an All' around good sport. His tour years of hard work make him one to be remembered, not so much as a basketball flash, but as a spark for the team. Dick Sullivan 6' was elected Captain by his teammates. His 253 points made him second high scorer on the team. Dick was voted on the all tourney 1st team and was second highest in the tournament with 59 points. Denny Bridinger 6'1 was one of the most spirited men on the squad. His great ability to rebound helped to control the backboardg he will be a hard man to replace next year.
