St Angela Mencz Founder of the Ursuline Order FOREWORD This year marks the four hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Ursuline Order by Saint Angela Merici at Bresicia ltaly in l535. The Ursuline Order was the first religious order of women devoted to teach- ing. St. Angela by founding this order set a precedent for the many other teaching orders who followed the example of the Ursuline Order. To Saint Angela thousands of children owe a debt of gratitude for in four centuries the Ursuline Order has been a great factor in the practical and spiritual education ot young people throughout the world. As the Ursuline nuns have played a large part in the existence of Calvert High School and in the graduation of the class of 1935, the members of this class have selected, as a theme for this volume of the Calvertana, the scope of the work of the Ursuline Order. The seniors feel very fortunate in having such an appropriate theme to use in recording a chronicle of the hCIpDY Years they have spent at Calvert High School. 45? .IJ35 I .IJ
