St Angela Mencz Founder of the Ursuline Order FOREWORD This year marks the four hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Ursuline Order by Saint Angela Merici at Bresicia ltaly in l535. The Ursuline Order was the first religious order of women devoted to teach- ing. St. Angela by founding this order set a precedent for the many other teaching orders who followed the example of the Ursuline Order. To Saint Angela thousands of children owe a debt of gratitude for in four centuries the Ursuline Order has been a great factor in the practical and spiritual education ot young people throughout the world. As the Ursuline nuns have played a large part in the existence of Calvert High School and in the graduation of the class of 1935, the members of this class have selected, as a theme for this volume of the Calvertana, the scope of the work of the Ursuline Order. The seniors feel very fortunate in having such an appropriate theme to use in recording a chronicle of the hCIpDY Years they have spent at Calvert High School. 45? .IJ35 I .IJ 1525 I ,IJ-11 St Angela We Thank You Q Arc-eta J' C1 , er st r rd ft nrnared fears aero Cohcerwed a to art o J e the so 15 t chrtdrer and e many more 'T' C tsut ea t er arae r et Q1 rn las u 4 t rhost at then ot e ertots tha truth Ana h pe D U Down tn ear ano corr. rs o hrs oraer s In every and The trrst re tg us Q Cer tor teachmg that a efer known The trrst to sa r trce rsett tor love ot God :notre And heaven s reward To the wer d s tar una porrtts desprtf u Just de rees Europe Arrer a, Ch ra Alaska rn ever one of these It spread and grew Ana thrs rrhroortal str.1C ure aesprte he Jage ot trme A 33 rc: Q L 'vc tn f f- eratess ,r Ana thrs sarn order nas taught hs Cdrfert nearly ar' e Now we rn st ao C ard tace a world o oeaseless Noe IZIHJVCIWCD or Udo As we qo our hearts are staunch though we know not what s rn store Be rt traqea or haop ness St Ang-eta e tharl' xou for T e Ursgh tes XPP v ' , ' ' I 1 O I 't. 13 Meri ', fr 'rwhfli' tar :nf tnxr 1 1. Looking over the copy for Eileen Burkes Points On Etiquette we noticed an answer to a question asking how many people should be in the receiving line at a wedding re- ception for Marcella Buchman and an English Lord. Entering the next office we found Will Banks sports editor rushing in with the news that Gilbert Bihn had broken the hundred yard dash record set by Joseph Tomecek last year. Everyone in the room was wildly excited over th fact that Mary Alice Clapper had swum the English Channel and that Fritz Scheiber had won the heavyweight championship of the world. We learned that Charles Letterhos with l'is teammates Siebenaller and Kurtzman were playing with the New York Pink Socks managed by Francis Main. Banks announced that Corleen Thome would defend her tennis title against Anna Kerkhoff the next day at the Fairmont Country Club where two weeks ago Mildred Swope had defeated the English Golf Champion. In the 'News From Nearby Towns department we found an article stating that Paul Bumschlag and Wade Stein were about to start on a cross-country tour selling Sure-Cure Corn Pads. From the Trenton Times we read that loanno Dariano was about to publish Photographic Facts for Ama- teurs. Irene Smith had recently opened an antique shop in Brooklyn. And finally we visited the Ad Department. We glanced at the galley ana saw that Frankart and Fiegilist florists were open for business. At the top appeared a large ad Sacksteder and Krupp High Class Veterinarians Dogs a Specialty. No cows horses pigs Of OICli!'1C1IY CIf1iI1'1C1lS CIllOWGd- With our minds filled with facts about our former classmates, we left the office of the Hysterical Hoboken Herald , realizing that a newspaper office is the best place to hear news. 4425 L l I 1 I 'I 1 Q 1 1 . 1 Q 1 -V - 1 . . . . . 11 . 11 . 1 , 1 1 . 1 - 1 11 . . 1 1 1 1 1 , , . .
