IQZ3. and having the benefit of Right Reverend Bishop Stritch's beautiful address. and hearing with pleasure his great praise of the work done in Ursuline Academy might conclude that he had in view a project which he considered far greater than the work done in the past sixty years of its existence. So it was. For some time the need in Tiffin of a Catholic high school for boys had been urgent. One proposition after another had been suggested and discarded as inadequate to meet the demand. A centralized high school seemed to adapt itself best to the situation. With this end in view plans were proposed early in the summer of 1923 by the Right Reverend Bishop to Reverend Francis Hultgen, pastor of St. Joseph's church Reverend James I-Iigginbotham pastor of St lVlary's church and the Ursuline Sisters A decision in favor of the centralization plan was reached the Sisters having agreed to close future registration for their academy and on July I9 the Right Reverend Bishop and the authorities of the proposed school met at the convent to make plans Preparations for the opening matured rapidly On August I2 a course of study was approved by Reverend Francis .I Macelwane diocesan superintendent of schools and on September IO forty two girls and thirty two boys were xteltomed as the iirst class The following chapters will disclose part of the contents of the four xolumes in which have been recorded the development of the new enterprise and the experiences of this pioneer class the lights the shadows as they fell CHAPTER I Opening That first day' Will we ever forget lt? We assisted at Holy Mass which was Sald for the success of our work and arrived as freshmen do on schedule time From the start we Were marked for honors at least so thought each one of that nondescript crowd To be sure some did bear a tinge of verdancy and some wore that lonesome home longing look that follows the young from the paternal shelter And behind all there was that anxious frame of mind which only those know who have blazed the trail Fears and doubts were dispelled however by the welcome of the Sisters and the encouraging words of Father Hultgen and Father Higginbotham who called on the opening morning Lonely But Happy Although the onlv class we freshmen of l923 were fortunate in not hav ing to run the gauntlet of Jeering upperclassmen I-Iazing was a thing of the The Old Order Changeth On October I2 we moved to the renox ated rooms in the east wing Classes had been conducted in the Academy building heretofore With the autumn future U 77 Q Dffsbff' 0 , . We Have An Election The greatest honor which can be accorded to a senior, that of representing the classes in paying their tribute to our Blessed Mother at the May Crowning. was decided by vote of the student body. Louis W. Huffman and Gertrude Peabody were chosen. Senior Honors Of the important decisions left to the senior class, undoubtedly the most vital was that of choosing from the list of pupils having an average of 3A's during their junior and senior years, the boy and girl who would represent the class at Commencement. Five qualifications were to influence the vote: the student's promise of being an honor to the school, stage appearance, speaking ability, service rendered to the school in the past, and scholarship. On the first ballot for either a boy or a girl, Louis W. Huffman was selected valedictorian, and on the second ballot Marie Steinmetz received the honor of salutatorian. GENESIAN CLUB One day toward the end of September. Doctor Gallagher announced that candidates might apply for admission to a dramatic club, the first in the high school. ln response the juniors and seniors flocked fifty strong to Room 3. to enter their names on the list. A more enthusiastic crowd could not have been anticipated and when, a week later, a play was in progress for the feast of St. Ursula Oct. 21 the students entered into the practice whole-heartedly. FI he club was represented at programs on the feast of St Cecelia at Christ mas and on Mother s Day The senlor class play A Lucky Break also drew from the Cienesians for its cast The club is named after St Genesius a comedian in the time of the emperor Dioclesian The latter on coming to Rome was received with great rejoicing Among many entertainments planned for him was a comedy in which the ceremonies of Christian baptism were to be represented in a ludicrous manner St Genesius then a pagan was one of the actors He lay on a couch on the stage and pretending that he was sick called for a priest Then a player acting as priest entered and asked Why he had been summoned Here Genesius sud denly converted by divine inspiration asked to be baptised The whole cere mony was then performed by the other players mimically After this Cuenesius arose and professed that he had received the divine light of the true faith The emperor highly enraged at these words ordered him to be put to death H died a Christian martyr and is honored by the Church as patron or actors ML-J' iw ff bw. .f RQJPB J Wx 71 af 5 ff .Z I- X rfb 'J Page O Q icq oy DZQAD OT J Q U: 'S 1 x 5 eos , , ..
