Working directly with the Student Council, Brother provides for a well organized program of social activities. The success of this year's dances can be attributed to his capable guidance. Guidance is a basic element in man's striving for knowledge. As its objective, guidance both molds and directs the individual to success. It attempts not to induce conformity but to give a keener perception of one's role in the iourney he is about to undertake. Activities compliment guidance in that they broaden the student's perspective through peer group association. To be a complete social as well as intellectual being, one must loin with fellow students in a program of organized social events. In its thirty-second year of publication, the newspaper lives up to the proud tradition of an award-winning iournalistic endeavor. THE HALL, adhering to tradition, garnered a First Place award at the annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association Convention. Leadership has been the key to the paper's success. Under the command of editor-in-chief John Cignatta and page editors John Walsh, Mike Jarosin- ski, Bill Hooper, and Jim Burlas, THE HALL has enioyed a rewarding iournal- istic year. Senior editor-in-chief, Donald Czapski, met the re- sponsibility of directing the hard working staff along with planning and proofing the material. Mr. Carl Pohlner, in his first year as moderator, undertook the task of guiding and advising the editor and 'finalizing material. Symbolizing the steps necessary to the successful completion of the yearbook, the staff has worked long, hard hours in preparing the 1968 CARDINAL AND GOLD. Members of the staff are Jim Whattam, Tom Hokemeyer, Jim Burlas, Steve Murphy, Pete Harker, Tom Stout, Bill Linz, Don Czapski, and Bernie Kotula. 41 background qSteve Murphy and Mr. Carl Pohlner, CARDINAL AND GOLD moderator, review one of several proposed cover designs. Consultation between moderator and staff is essential for a well-composed yearbook. A meaningful and organized year- book depends upon leadership. Pro- viding the necessary planning for this year is editor-in-chief Donald Czapski. ln order to achieve his task, the editor must coordinate the iour- nalistic attempts of the stat'-T mem- bers. StaFf members Jim Whattam, Tom Hokemeyer, and Tom Stout prepare copy for the CARDINAL AND GOLD. The preparation of finalized copy is an important aspect of yearbook development. As Pete Harker discusses a tempor- ary dilemma with the publisher, Bill Linz prepares a timetable for un- derclassmen pictures. Rapport among publisher, administration, and mod- erator enables the CARDINAL AND GOLD to proceed on schedule. Bernie Kotula and Jim Burlas look over pictures to decide which will be employed in the yearbook. Pic- tures dealing with school life are emphasized in this preliminary selec- tion phase. m i ,,,s. , si. Presentation of material that reflects a true experience rather than a false, contrived one is the aim of the Hall's literary maga- zine, VISTA. The school of today is not limited to the confines of a building and neither should the magazine that represents it. Since arriving at this decision, editor-in-chief Mike Jarosinski and associate editors Jerry Fenzel and John Romanski have begun a policy of printing material which deals with people and events. interviews are made forlpatricular stories, those interviewed may not always be part of the campus scene, but are of interest to the student body. Through their emphasis on the quality aspects of writing instead of quantity, the editors feel that the students will become more interested in the literary efforts of the con- tributors. With the emphasis on proper use of in-school study time, the staff must keep the library organized so that students can find the necessary material with little loss of valuable study time. The library serves as the center for the student's intellectual endeav- ors and must be well-maintained for maximum efficiency. Staff members, giving up their free time, keep the library's resources of books, maga- zines, and pamphlets in their pre-destined order. Organization of these resources enables the eru- dite student to find and put to use the material necessary to the successful completion of an aca- demic experience. Along with the expansion of the library came an expansion in the horizons that each student can obtain by proper use of the facilities. IL. The plays have been remark- able hits in the past, and this year's production of Camelot proved to be one of the best ever, due largely to the hard work of Mr. Al Fields. 4 King Pelinore, played by Thomas Kuhl, warns the evil Mordred, portrayed by Bob Cecil, against the underhanded carrying out of any of his schemes planned for King Arthur's demise. Pat Nolan sings her opening number concerning her reluctance to live in Camelot. Later, Lancelot is introduced as a tierce warrior by his unknowing defeat of Arthur in Battle. Part of the Men's Chorus' image is the aban- doning of the Glee Club's red vests to more greatly associate the Chorus with the develop- ment of the fine arts instead of an extra- curricular activity and its outht. By blending harmonies for melodious tones, the Men's Chorus, through the universal enioyment of music, serves as a goodwill ambassador at social functions not associated with the school. In seeking this goal, the band not only provided the opportunity for musical development of its own members but also instilled a measure of school pride in the student body at the Hall. Due to these etftorts of the band, the public, already aware of Calvert HalI's educational excellence, is becoming acquainted with its cultural superiority. Eyeing his music, a band member goes through movements and keeps in step to the tune of Born Free. John O'Laughlen, one of the most ardent in the group, visits Johns Hopkins University once a week to tutor a slow learner. Club members also visit Montebello Hospital four nights a week to cheer up its residents. Tutoring at Strawbridge is another function of this year's club. The tutoring is done on a one-to-one basis with many inner city children benefiting from their instruction. Though these proiects last throughout the year, Community Action planned various activities of a shorter nature typified by the highly successful Christmas drive. Though these functions greatly benefit those people for whom the programs were designed, the members of Community Action are also taught lessons in respect and regard for other people, as well as being filled with a feeling of deep self-satisfaction. Per- mission to try new innovations is frequently utilized. The Folk Mass, Communion under both species, con- gregation gathered around the altar, the priest actu- ally conferring with the congregation, and concele- bration are iust some examples. Members of the Religion Department often discuss plans to initiate changes. One of their goals is to bring about more of a person-to-person relationship with Religion and God. Days of Recollection held in previous years have been discontinued. Emphasis has been placed on the closed three day retreat made by the seniors. 1 Miss Morris and Tim Murray work on the arrangement of a new folk hymn. Individual and team trophies were presented to champions in the maior sports. A point system was introduced by which overall champions for the year could be determined. All club members were required to remain active as either officials, scorers or statisticians. Judging from its initial success, it appears that the Intramural Club will become a fixture at the Hall. Although it lacked a height advantage over most opponents, the team hustled their way to many victories. The squad employed a UCLA- type press to force their op- ponents into numerous mis- takes. The fast-breaking Car- dinals turned many of these turnovers into baskets. Led by the scoring of Gordy Bengal and the playmaking of Phil Popovec, the team finished first in their division. But with their eyes fixed on the division crown they lost to Southern, and the team's hopes were smashed, and they finished with an improved T2-6 log. Pitching was a strong point, and with aces Mike Gill and .lerry Fenzel returning again this year, the mound staff should remain strong. Although the absence of Rick Sterba, Mike Baier, and Tim Williams weakens the lineup somewhat, returnees Scott Williams, Ray Byrne, Mike Pivec, and .lim Fallon will anchor it once more. Ray Byrne slams another hit into right field. Ray has proven time and time again to be a clutch hitter. qTim Williams races for first base. Tim, Card third baseman, was a consistent performer in both batting and fielding for last year's team. Card center fielder Jim Fallon displays his batting form in a challenging game against Patterson. X. A GREAT AMERICAN PASTlME I, 1 ,. - , ,z 1 1 1 1'1- 1 111 1 , 1 11 11 - ,,,,, ,,,,,, . He graduated from Calvert Hall in 192.7 after starring on the school's soccer team and pitching on the baseball team. Nlr. Groom had a brief career in professional baseball. In his years at the school Mr. Groom pro- duced over six championship teams and had several of his players on All-American teams. After soccer season Mr. Groom 'gave much of his time to working with the baseball, team. The esteem in which he was' placed was noted when the Maryland House of Delegates passed a resolu- tion expressing its regrets at his passing. One section stated, ln his passing the City of Baltimore, Calvert Hall,'and sports enthusiasts through- out the state have lost an outstanding figure.
