ll . . ll . . . The Son of the Living God. lt was a tense, heart-searching moment tor those twelve disciples. Their be- loved leader ot those past two years had asked a most pointed question. Will ye also go away? Big, sturdy fellows they were, tanned by living in the open, but a pallor came to the face of each as the full signiticance of these words struclc them. Will ye also go away? There was the crowd departing. Some calling Jesus a fool and a blas- phemer. Others questioning. Still others, heads together, discussing the matter. In general, however, a refusal to accept his declaration, I am the living bread which came down from heaven . lnstinctively, they turned to their general spokesman, Peter. Let him answer first. Peter's mind was racing. The experiences of these past two years with Jesus passed before him in swift review. Men with loathsome diseases had been re- stored to health and joy. Others with sin-sick souls, discouraged, sad and cynical, found faith and hope by the ministration ot this wonderful Companion and Friend. He could never forget how in the very beginning Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up tor to read. And there was delivered unto him the book ot the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 'The spirit ot the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poorf he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering ot sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year ot the Lord' . . . And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture tultilled in your ears. Then again scenes of another memorable day came before Peter's vision. While in prison, John had heard of the works of Jesus and sent two of his disciples to him. And when -the men were come unto him, they said, 'John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we tor another?' And in that same hour he lclesusj cured many ot their intirmities and plagues, and ot evil spirits: and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, 'Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard: how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, who- soever shall not be ottended in me.' Ah, now Peter had his answer! Eyes shining, heart burning, he turned to Jesus and said, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. What a challenge this question of Jesus presents to the world today! Will we turn away trom Jesus, or believe Peter's testimony that Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God ? May we say, Lord, l believe . -Grace Ayers

ls -lhere A Solution ..... He was seen walking hurriedly through the mass ot humanity in the downtown area ot Los Angeles. In appearance he was no ditterent trom the other thousands who crowded the streets every evening at a tew minutes past tive. Although his pro- gress was hurried, it could not be said that he stepped lively, tor he walked as though his teet were lead, seemingly having to torce them to move. I-Iis expression was that ot every one else on the street: tired, a little anxious and quite worried. I-Ie seemed impatient it some one stepped in his path as he threaded his way toward the satety zone. Presently he would be holding on to a strap, shoving and being shoved by the thousands who were now beginning to seek their homes in the suburbs ot the great city. Yes, the metropolitan area was being emptied ot its sea ot humanity as tast as transportation could untangle itselt trom the congested avenues. Continuing to tollowu our triend we 'notice that he seems a bit preoccupied, and a little too much so, tor as he steps trom the curb he is greeted by the shriek ot brakes and the blast ot an automobile horn. No, it isn't a tragedy but it might have been. Stepping back up on the curb and looking around he tinds to his surprise that he had tried to enter the line ot trattic against a red light. Turning to a stranger standing beside him he is heard to remark that it sure was a close one and, I haven't the slightest idea why I was in such a hurry: I have no place to go in particular and nothing to do when I get there . Then, as the light changes to green, he hurries Ott into the iostling crowd and is again lost amid his worry and anxiety. Could this scene have possibly taken place in a nation such as ours, a nation that claims to be at peace? Yes, such scenes as this are enacted around us every day, It surely must be a mistaken idea that ours is a peacetul nation. Peaceful on the outside yes, and to other nations, but inside, the people themselves who make up so great a country are in a great unrest. They are dissatistied with lite, with social conditions. with positions: all seem to have a complaint to make. But need such a condition exist? ls there not some remedy tor a tired, worn and upset world? We hear many such questions as this, and how glad we are that we can answer in the words ot the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the I-Iebrews: There remoineth there- tore 0 rest to the people ot God . A rest where we can lay aside all the cares ot the world, where we can cease from everything and enter into that rest ot taith and trust in God. A rest in which all anxiety tor the perplexing problems ot the modern world will ever be in the background. For he thot is entered into his rest hcrth ceased trom his own works, cfs God did trom His. -Harry F. Pickens

-l-hree Ministries of the Holy Spirit . As the world today rushes madly on its way with its disquieted spirit and groping in blindness, how sweet to the heart of the believer are the words of the Lord Jesus set down by the pen of St. John, the beloved, Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you: but if I depart, I will send Him unto you. And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment .... Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of Himself: but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. , Could there be any greater sorrow overtake one than having the person nearest and dearest to their heart taken away from them? We say no , for this seems to be the ordinary, reactive course of human nature. Here, in this sixteenth chapter of John, we find this picture. The disciples' hearts are filled with sorrow because their Lord has told them of his departure from them. It seemed almost incredible to them that their Lord, whom they had forsaken all for and learned to love so ardently, should be taken from them: yet it must be true. How fitting that Jesus said I will send the Comforter to you . Comfort was what they needed at this time and the Lord knowing this gave them the promise of the Holy Spirit as the Comforter. True as these words are and blessed to receive, in the very next verse our Lord reveals the fact that he shall not only be the Comforter but the Reprover. Ah! here we find the thorn on the stem of the rose. How we love to nestle the rose as we inhale its fragrance, but how quickly we forget the beauty and essence of its being when the thorn pricks us. So it is with the Holy Spirit: all too soon is his comfort forgotten in the pain of reproof. Strange as it may seem this leads us into the revelation of the third work of the Holy Spirit as found in this chapter. Where there is no reproof there is no cor- rection. Where there is correction, there is guidance. He will guide you into all truth. Just as parents are guides to their children in reproving them for the wrong things and leading them into the right: so the Holy Spirit reproves us of sin, righteous- ness, and judgment and guides us into all truth. What is the all truth that we shall be guided into? Jesus himself said I am the way, the truth, and the life . John I4-:6. Here we find that which is absolute and brings us to the consumation of the Holy Spirit as our guide. For he shall not speak of himself: but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak. For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink: but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. -Dorothy L. Lewis.
