CALVARY .... WHERE LIFE BEGINS CALVARY I Iis Earthly Ministry . . IN THOSE DAYS John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness of Judea. It seemed that all Jerusalem came out to hear him. All those who longed for the Messiah were strangely moved by the preaching of this rough, conscience- clisturbing desert preacher Then cometh Jesus from Galilee down to the Jordon river. Mingling through the crowds Jesus finally came face to face with the prophet dressed in cameI's hair with Ieathern girdle about his loins. After listening to the l3aptist's message, the Saviour presents himself along with the others as a candidate for the baptism of repentance, even though He knew no sin. As Christ walked down into the water of the Jordan -river the preacher of repentance drew back with wonder! Did he recognize the Pure and Spotless One? Whether John was told this was the Christ we do not know but Jesus quickly put him at ease and said, Suffer it to be so now: tor thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness . And Jesus was baptised that day with all the rest of the people identify- ing Himself with sinful humanity. His baptism however was unusual for when He emerged from the water He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove. and Iighting upon him, and also the voice of God was heard saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased . Let us remember that before we can begin our life of service for our Master, we too, must humble ourselves and receive our seal of recognition which is the baptism of power for service. Christ was not only baptised with the water of repentance but by the Holy Spirit of God. If God attested his approval of Christ's ministry by the Holy Ghost can we not also have his approval on our ministry? Forgetting not the injunction of St. Paul let us therefore Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth . God's approval on the Christian ministry today is the need of the hour. May we ponder over these words of St. Paul to Timothy, and also the memorable scene at the Jordan river when Christ began his earthly ministry, that we too might have God's approval and seal upon our lives. -Carl E. Hatch
