Most considered it an unlikely, even foolish, time for anyone to consider new projects requiring financial support. Yet the four men meeting at the doctor's home shared a common concern. There was no Bible school to be found within 500 miles of Kansas City. Missouri. The burden had been the focal point of much prayer for many months. even years. Following considerable discussion, each of the four pro- duced a one dollar bill from his pocket and laid it on the table around which the group sat. The men shared a faith and expectation that God would multiply and bless the investment represented by those four one dollar bills. So began the Kansas City Bible Institute. The quartet consisted of three Kansas Citians -- Dr. Walter L. Wilson. Rev. David B. Bulkley. and Rev. R. Fuller Jaudon - plus Dr. D. J. Rolls of New Zealand. Dr. Wilson was named president and Dr. Rolls was installed as dean of the new school. On Tuesday morning. September 7. 1932, the doors of Kansas City Bible Institute were opened to six full-time day students. But evening studies offered a greater attraction and night school students swelled the total enrollment to 96 that first year. The KCBI campus consisted of a beauti- ful old mansion located at 426 Gladstone Boulevard. 52125 fhg 11111111111 .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. William May accepted the presidency of KCBI, thereby permitting Dr. Wilson to return to his extensive Bible conference ministry. The year 1935 spawned not only a new location. but a new name as well. ln the spring. Institute became College and by August. downtown Kansas City had become cam- pus site number three. The Grand Avenue Temple Building at Ninth Street and Grand Avenue provided office and classroom facilities. Dr. Wilson returned to the presidency of the college in 1938 when Dr. May resigned to answer God's call to a new ministry. The Keith and Perry Building at Ninth and Walnut became home for KCBC in 1939. and it remained the college's home for five years. Then came the decision for the college to go west -- one block. Campus number five was in the Ridge Building at 913 Main Street. But in 1945 the suburban community of Prairie Village, just across the state line in Kansas. offered something downtown Kansas City. Missouri. had failed to provide -- a long-awaited permanent campus. The former site of the Pembroke School for Boys at 75th Street and State Line Road became the sixth campus in the school's brief histo- ry. The four-plus acres with three large buildings. a sunken garden, and huge shade trees was undoubtedly a welcome sight following a decade in downtown office buildings. Bible instruction continued at the State Line location for the next twenty-one years. . I W , I Dr. Nye J. Langmade nyc- ...Af sz.: il 5 ,xr Mrs. Lillabelle Langmade and grandsons Dr. F. William May Dr. F. William May led an active life of ministry for the Lord right up until the last year or two of his sojourn on earth. He is distinguished for minis- try during the first three phases of Calvary's histo- ry: Q11 president of Kansas City Bible College from 1932-38: Q21 co-founder of Midwest Bible and Mis- sionary Institute: and Q31 president emeritus of Calvary Bible College until his death. He was also involved in an extensive preaching and teaching ministry which included Bible conference speak- ing. adult Bible classes. radio preaching. and mis- sionary trips. His varied career always centered on fundamental Christianity. Dr. May's ministry was characterized by humil- ity. consistency. godliness. and devoted expectan- cy of the Lord's imminent return. He began preach- ing in 1905 at the age of 18. He and Glayds Wood- bury became marriage partners on June 22. 1916. L . Mpc Dr. Nye J. Langmade was a founder and first presi- dent of the Midwest Bible and Missionary Institute in 1946. which later became Midwest Bible College. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Calvary Bible College in-1965 following the merger of Midwest and Kansas City Bible College ln 1961.- He had been in the Lord's work for more than 50 years by the time of his death. having held a part-time pastorate in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area while he was operating a chain of grocery stores. He entered the full- time ministry in 1927. Dr. Langmade was one of the founders of Salina Bible Church in 1932 and was its pastor until 1946. He also was president of the lnde- pendent Fundamental Churches of America from 1940 to 1942 and ex- ecutive secretary of the IFCA from 1950 to 1955. Dr. Langmade was promoted to glory on October 4, 1967. at his home in Salina at the age of 75. His ministry to Calvary ls being perpetuated through his sons, Oli- ver and Douglas. as they serve on Calvary's Board of Trustees. Mrs. May died on January 5, 1977. within one year of the unexpected deaths of their two children. Leslie and Martha. Dr. May himself went to be with the Lord within another year and a half on June 12. 1978. 4 The early 1950's blessed the two schools with continued growth. Both had seemingly established firm roots on permanent campus sites. grateful to leave their wandering days behind. The future ap- peared bright. But with the close of the decade came darkening clouds to blanket their individual horizons. Troubled times followed. Declining enrollments and financial pressures produced in the eyes of many a bleak future for both schools. New life. however. dawned with the 60's as God. ever faithful to His Word. began revealing His plan to bring forth prosperity and blessing from tribulation. Officials from both schools met to focus their collec- tive attentions upon a proposed merger. Conversa- tion developed into an established plan of action and the proposal became reality. Kansas City Bible Col- lege and Midwest Bible College frenamed in 19591 merged in May of 1961. The newly formed institution was given a home on the former KCBC campus at 75th and State Line and was given the name Calvary Bible College. Board members from both predecessor schools comprised a new Board of Trustees, which named Rev. Roger J. Andrus, retiring president of Midwest. to head the new school. The union produced a marriage of goals and pur- poses from both of the original schools. This was exemplified in the student body. which numbered 220 for the September 12th opening day of classes. There was a melting pot of ideas, plans, hopes. and Former KCBC Campus - hrs! home for CBC following merger in 1961. traditions from which a common heritage was estab- lished. This common heritage provided strength. character. and direction for the school as a bright future broke through the once-ominous clouds of doubt and turmoil. Five years later in 1966. Calvary's enrollment bal- looned to 298. Outgrowing the Prairie Village loca- tion. the college migrated back to the city and relo- cated on the former campus of Loretto Academy at 1111 West 39th Street in Kansas City. Missouri fsee belowl. The student body continued to spiral in num- bers until enrollment peaked in 1971 at 384. Calva- ry's campus again was taxed for space. The spiral then shifted into reverse. however. and enrollments dropped as the college once again found itself traveling through rough waters with forecasts and fears of doom bubbling to the surface. But God had a future in His plan for the college and in 1974 the previously troubled waters, now stilled by the Master's touch. began reflecting optimism and promise. The Board of Trustees selected Dr. Leslie Madison to serve as president, filling a critical void that had existed for more than two years. By 1978 the 39th Street campus was again full. yet still com- fortable. The succeeding years brought further in- creases in enrollment, with continued evidence of God's rich blessings upon CBC. Academic Dean. and Executive Vice-President. In 1956 he became the president of Midwest and led the col- lege into the merger with Kansas City Bible Col- lege. The merger was effected in the spring of 1961 by Dr. Andrus and Dr. Al Metzger, then interim president of KCBC. Dr. Andrus continued to lead Calvary as President during the move in 1966 to the 39th Street Campus until ill health forced his resignation in the spring of 1973. Dr. Andrus was honored on December 4. 1973. when the Doctor of Divinity degree was conferred upon him during a special convocation in the col- lege chapel. Special recognition was also given him at that time by the IFCA for his many years of faithful service in the cause of Christ. After leaving Calvary he went on to serve with International Missions and then pastored the Com- munity Bible Church in Omaha. Nebraska. until his retirement. Dr. Leslie Madison accepted a unanimous call to Calvary Bible College on July 26. 1974.
