The days we have spent at Calumet have been richly blessed. Over the years our halls have echoed with the voices and laughter of many students. Now we are about to leave. Each of us will carry away with him not only the knowledge which he has gleaned. but also the pleasant recollections and memories of happy associations with friends and teachers. As you turn these pages, we hope, you too will capture these precious moments and imprint them on your memory forever. Our first impression of the gigantic halls when we were frightened and bewildered freshmen, the interesting assemblies, the hours of homework- all on the wrong night, of course, those horrible course books, the socials, the election of Sports Queen, the first football game which gave our team real spirit after tying last year's champion, C,V.S., the cheering in the lunchroom, the crowning of the football queen, the A.C.C.L. Assembly to top the drive, the dances given by the Senior Girls Council, the joy given us by our Fighting Indians when they won the Public League Football Championship, the Christmas program, the final examina- tions, the National Honor Society, the friendships made, and of course the trouble we got out of by the skin of our teeth, and finally, the thrill of graduation, and the sorrow of parting. All these memories and many more will always linger with us. MOMENTS TO REMEMBER Page 5 F--Q YM' 'NEW f 'W et? CENTENNIAL - 1856-1956 Within the last one hundred years many changes have taken place in our high schools. We have a broader curriculum, many more activities, a more extensive athletic program, and a closer relationship with our teachers. Many more opportunities are oH'ered to young people today. We have reached the pla- teau toward which we have been climbing during our four wonderful years at Calumet. Vle have progressed from frightened freshmen, suffering sophomores, jubilant juniors to our present senior status. These years have given us treasured friend- ships and memories. School socials and elections, A.C.C.L. Assemblies, Calurama, Football games with our cheering the 1956 Football team to the city championship, will always be vividly recalled by us Calites. Yes, we have arrived-we have reached the plateaun which four short years ago seemed to be the peak. We are grateful to the faculty of Calu- met for aiding us in our climb, and for widening our horizons along the way. As seniors, we recognize yesterday's peak as to- day's plateau, and we can find real meaning in Robert Browning's lines: A man's reach must exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for. vii? In our first year, we experienced a new kind of living. It took some time for us to adjust to our new environment and to learn what such terms as: AGGL, SGG, GAA, and G.O.P meant. The upperclassmen seemed so superior, but, no matter, we lived in a world of our own. It took us until our second year to realize that we hadn't worked hard enough while we were Freshmen. Now we became aware of the things going on about us-school activities, socials, and sports. Suddenly, we were caught up in the web of school life. By the time our third year rolled around, we were wondering how we could have been so lax. Looking IUNE, 1957 ahead, we eagerly anticipated the coming of Senior- hood-that great time when halls are penetrable with or without passes, important committee meetings are held every day, and no homework is given! Alas, our dreams were shattered. Good Heavens! What had we been doing the past three years. No wonder they leave the Senior year until the last-it's the hardest. Now we are approaching an exciting time including Glass Day, the Prom, and Commencement. As we near our departure, we look hopefully forward to college or employment but we also look happily back on the pleasant 'days we have spent in Calumet, our Alma Mater. Where does the student body get its school spirit? Much of it can be traced to Calumet's superior band. The concert band consists of 112 members including librarians and baton twirlers. The band plays at most of our football games, pa- rades, and school assemblies: and it also played at North- western Big Band Day. This year the band took part in the half time activities of a Cardinal Football game. The Band Parents Association has done a lot to help the band. A skating party and bake sales were held to raise money toward new uniforms. The band puts in a lot of hard work for our school, but it has fun too. Picnics and parties, and the fun of just riding the buses to and from special events, help make its task a lighter one. This organization is a group of outstanding 4A girls, under the sponsorship of Miss Ursula Mortimer. Each semester the entire faculty elects the members on the basis of scholarship and char- acter from lists proposed by the session teachers. The officers of the council are elected by the members. The duties these girls perform are serving their school and their community by acting as hostesses, guides, ushers, they also serve as helpers to school executives, teachers, P.T.A. members, civic orga- nizations and other community groups. JUNE SENIOR GIRUS COUNCIL The organization's social activities consist of a dance, a tea for the mothers of all the graduat- ing seniors, and a tea for the mothers of the members of the Senior Girls' Gouncil. The dances this year were called November Nocturne and Breath of Spring. Officers: Mary Jean Forster, Treasurer, Diana Hofstra, Sec- retary, Martha Gray, Vice-President, Mary Chro- nos, President. The group, under the direction of Mrs. Harold Houser, has done much to further the relationship between parent and school. Their business this year began with a successful member- ship drive. Each month the PTA holds an in- formative and interesting program for the members. Wfe at Calumet certainly appreciate the work done by this association. 'R EW 'S- f' FOOTBALL TEAM This year's football team finished with the terrific record of eight wins, two ties, and two losses. Under the able leadership of Mr. Zayner, the Calumet eleven became the hrst Wliite Division team to take the Public League Championship and advance to the hnal game. This inspired play earned them the nickname of 'Cinderella Team . However, those who followed Calumet through the whole schedule of games know that it was no quirk of fate or luck. The dogged determination and lighting spirit, along with the exceptional talent displayed, gave the Indians their most potent team in the school's history. Calumet, continually the underdog, always arose to the occasion, no matter what the odds. Their fabulous record and outstanding play will be a legend, a lasting monument to -Cal's Cinderella team. SCORES Q The boys in this organization realize that they are not going to have the turn-out of people that the major sports have, but they still practice harcl and long for their meets and put just as much into winning as do thc football or basketball teams. Under the able leadership of M1'. Dygert, wrestling coach. the boys receive a thorough and strict training in the art of wrestling, and they show it when they come up against a rough opponent. This not only pleases M1'. Dygert, but the boys themselves as they realize that hard work really cloes pay off after all. Calumet took 2ncl place in thc South Section. These girls in blue and white hold their meetings every Tues- day. With the help of Miss Laura Pearson they plan most of our G.A.A. activities including the posture contest, dances, badminton and ping pong tournaments, and splash parties. The highlight of the year comes when the Sports Queen is crowned at the Christmas assembly. They also sponsor a Play Day where rep- resentatives from other schools come to Cal for a day of fun and games. s uu 5' pu Mn .
