My :Q WHY WE PCINT WITH PRIDE We are proud of the line courses ot study which are offered to each Calite- every subject designed to educate the student for life. We are proud of the healthy feeling ol sportsmanship-the joys and sorrows of a team working together to Win. The -social functions which relieve a burdened mind of its troubles make us proud, too. The hearty hello's in the halls, the friendly way the teachers work with us- these make us proud-proud to belong to Calumet and proud to point with pride! A captivatina and colortiii carnival Caiurarnam- the hidhiiaht ot our schooi year took piace on Wednesday, November Z, 1955. Thousands throncied into the dayiy decorated school It seemed hke Mardi-Gras timer- booths, txaiiies, retreshments everything needed tor a niaht ot tun and excitement. There were water baiiets, bas- ics-tbaii and wrestlina exhibitions, a hilarious Frantic Fashion Farce show, a Mtreakn show, movies, skits, and a variety show staaed by Cai's own talent. The climax ot the evenina was the crownina ot Miss Caiurania, Virainia Stathos, by the noted disc iocizey, Howard Miller. Cahirama was a areat success, thanks to the hard work ot the teachers ot Calumet, the student body, rind the PTA, and, ot course, those who attended it 'i'ri1lx', -'iii enioyable time 'was had by ali. Class of '57 Page 33 Class Cfficers LLOYD HUMPHREYS President NALD ELLERBECK ice President Class History - January, 1956 Ianuary, 1952 was a momentous occasion for one hundred forty- nine bewildered Freshmen. We wandered through the halls of Calumet High School that first semester, all of us anticipating the four wonderful years ahead with no thought given to future ambitions. Little did we realize that these years would literally fly by. We en- countered and coped with many new problems in this first year of our new adventure, such as programing ourselves for the oncoming semester. The next big steps were our Sophomore and Iunior years. They were composed of memorable times, and it was then we realized that along with social life came responsibilities. Attending school socials and voting in A.C.C.L. elections became familiar customs. Upon entering this, our Senior year, the ultimate of education for some of us, we soon learned the real meaning and value of final grades, trait ratings, and a successful future. Of course, we enjoyed many wonderful experiences during this time also, our Iune Prom at the Knickerbocker being the most rnernorable. Almost too quickly these four years have elapsed, and after tonight, our final commence- ment, we shall begin another adventure, each on a separate path, and each wondering what life will bring. And so, Calumet, in Ianu- ary, 1956 we thank you-and to you we say-Farewell. Class Officers Leonard Lotz President Kay Dyer Vice President Class History - June, 1956 TIME: September, l952Elune, 1956 PLACE: Calumet High School CHARACTERS: 357 Teen-agers and Faculty As the curtain goes up, we see a new crowd of terrified Freshies, feeling very small, as they enter Calumet for the first time. Mr. Worst and the faculty make them more sure of themselves very shortly. While the plot thickens, they become interested in the activities the school has to offer. Sports seem to be a main attraction during the second scene, along with clubs, socials, and other interesting events. This is when Mr. Neal Duncan enters their lives as the chief executive of the school. In our third scene, the Iuniors are ordering their class rings for which they patiently have been waiting. To continue with the play, new events are taking place. Miss Eleanor Fitzgerald is the new principal, and Calurama is underway. The actors are now Seniors, and no doubt, the last part of this year will be the most memorable for all. With eagerness they work on the election of class officers, Senior Girls' Council dance, prom, Class Day, and Com- mencement. ln no time at all, some students become members of the National Honor Society. This brings us to the close of our play as the curtain talls. On graduation night, those who participated in the pro- duction took their final bows. On behalf of the cast, we wish to thank the teachers who have been more to us than just directors these past four years. Their friend- ship and guidance will long be remembered as we leave Calumet, only to return as Alumni. Arlene Toepfer Secretary Iudy Stafford Treasurer C inf -when YQ' iw .id .,,. On December 2, 1926 the CALNUZ became the CALUMET CRIER and a weekly newspaper. These are a few facts making up the history of our school paper. Besides facts, hard-working students make up the history and the future of the CRIEB: the editors work- ing and worrying over their page plans, the reporters not starting til the day before and showing up Wed- nesday pleading for one more day. Finally when the stories are in, the galleys back, the heads written and the proof corrected, the CBIEB comes out during ses- sion on Friday, The staff members are always thankful to their editorial adviser, Mr. Charles Baker and the circula- tion staff head, Miss Virginia Moran. These young Fourth-estaters will always remember the hard work, fun, and merriment of room 318, Page ' x no - . X qu' fs , , t T 1 sf QQQ, , f -? Ef- fav 3-9 Syd! O.T.C., LEADING CITIZENS OF TOMORROW The Reserve Qlficers' Training Corps was established in IW? in accordance with the National Defense Act of IQZU, this program was further established and strengthened by the Na- tional Defense Act of IQ47. The training of the cadets teaches them good citizenship and patriotism, together with a solid basic knowledge of military life, especially the Infantry, The corps is supervised by Master Sergeant Richard T, Flynn. He. with the aid of several capable battalion officers and non- commissioned officers, teaches the cadets many military tech- niques and skills such as first aid and personal hygiene that are beneficial to civilians as well as soldiers. The Calumet ROTC. has several special organizations that draw their members from the corps as a whole, The rifle team is constantly practicing and competing to improve the marksmanship of its members. The picked platoon is made up of the students that show the most proficiency in leadership and drill and serves to teach them better leadership practices. The drill team comes from this platoon. The above functions and others have kept the Calumet ROTC. well above the city aver- age with promise of even greater achievements in the days to come, PICKED PLATOON COLOR GUARD Woodruff, Novak, Wibcra Row 1: Martin, Reichow, Lanlz, Sgt Flynn, McNair, Buchanan Row 2: Ahern, Oswald, Hauser, Turner, North, Novak, Findley, Maitland, Row 3: Novak, Sherman, Turner Haucher, Zoulek, Murray, Blackman. Many of us, however, dc not realize how much the PTA. really contributes to Calumet, vaguely associating it with community betf terment. Some of its specific functions are: assisting with the freshmen health examination, sponsoring Open- House Night, and providing for the individual pictures in the Temulac by doing the work of picture-taking, distribution, and collection, and donating all profits to the Temulac fund. The team looked great, going into the first stages of the i955 campaign by beating Gage Park 12-O and Kelly 19-U. lt looked as if the Cal lndians would go all the way to an unbeaten championship in the White Division of South Section, but due to several injuries and the surprising comeback of the other teams in the section, Cal was set back in three consecutive defeats by Hirsch, DuSable, and Dunbar. Our Homecoming game with Hirsch was the most disappointing game because of the poor score. Richard Moloney, Calumet guard, was elected to the All-Chicago Area team. BASKETBALL With traditional tight and spirit the Calumet Indians took second in South Section to gain a place in the City play-ottsi The team looked great at the beginning ot the season and became better after the turn of the semester because the mid-season graduation did not deplete the squad, except for the loss of one guard, Lloyd Humphreys. Although there were only two returning Lettermen, the squad had a number of experienced members who were back tor their second year on the team. Directed by Coach lohnny Ivers and with the help of cofcaptains Roy Beiltuss and lim Pavlotos, the Indians did a terrific job. Roy Beil- tuss was third in all city scoring and with this accomplishment, we should give him a hand ot praise. FROSH-SOPH BASEBALL Iohn lvers' Indians show promise for the com' ing l956 baseball season. The Indians feel cer- tain of retaining or improving their standing of third place, set by the '55 squad. Their hitting is a little weak, but with hard work, practice, and in- struction from Coach lvers, he is certain it will meet with any competition the South Section has to offer. Coach lvers feels that the most difficult to defeat this year will be Fenger, Bowen, and C.V,S., who took first, second, and fourth places in last year's competition. Along with returning Lettermen Bob Pucel, Gordy Iohnson, Bod Moe, and the other starting players, Ierry Heard, Iohn Ochsenfeld, Al Lind- horst, Bon Kraponicki, Bob Hageman, and Walter Bollinger, it is a well-rounded team. i 'Sw BASEBALL Row l: Mcguire. It is under the guidance ot Mr. Ted Zayner. The club maintains a Stu- dent Police Force to keep order in Cal's lunchroorn, and club mem- bers also serve as Fire Marshalls- To receive a maroon letter is one ot the highest achievements a girl can attain, much to the amazement of some skeptics. Hours ol hard work and energy are behind this honor, and it is with a sigh of relief that a winner steps up to receive her prize. In order to obtain her letter, she must be an all-around girl, Sports are the major portion ot her thousand points, but posture, scholarship, and service also enter into the winning. Outside activities constitute a large percentage of her points also. Truly, the airl with a letter deserves great credit for her hard work and a vote ol thanks tor service ren- dered to her school. Pa xlt GlRL'S OWLING CLUB The Girls Bowling Club, under the able coaching ot Mr. It Free- strom, came up with some imf pressive scores this season.
