THE TIME IS NOW Shortly before Amistice Day last year Mr. Worst received the following letter: For the past three years when Armistice Day is drawing near, I think more and more of my son whom I used to drop off, at Cal on my way to work each morning. No, I don't think of him as an honor student, or even as an exceptional student in any class at Cal. I do think of him as a good son and as a student of Cal that learned from your teachers to always boost the other fellows that he worked with. Here is what makes me say the above. In the personal belongings of my son who was killed over Berlin, March 6, 1944, as Engineer on a B-17 Bomber, I find in his own handwriting a scribbled poem still boosting the other fellow. Oh, We're braver than hell, On the ground all is well, In the air it's a different story: We sweat out our track Through fighters and flak, We're willing to split up the glory. Well, they didn't reject us, So Heaven protect us, And until all the shooting abates, A Give us courage to fight 'em. Oh, yes, one more item: An escort of P-38's. P. S. As I said before: This was scribbled. It really looked original. But whether original or not, it makes his pop feel good to think he was all for the men in those P-38's. And I really believe he got that kind of teaching at Cal. Please excuse the ink. I should have used blue because that's how lfeel. ' I .- .- A , , ' No, 'I won-Vt'sign it. But I do hope you get some consolation out of it for your lf a Q teachers. .. The Englishman looked at the questioner a moment, and then answered, l arn doing everything I can to make it better. What are you doing? MR C PRINCIPAL I believe the way you answer this question, today and in the days to come, will determine what you are doing for the betterment of your fellow men. We cannot all play important parts in the world, but we all have a part, big or small, and that part we must play to the best of our ability. We hope you will feel, as the years go by, that the training and inspiration you received during your four years at Calumet have helped you adapt yourself to your new responsi- bilities. Take those responsibilities, handle them in the very best way you can, and then we shall know that our 'graduates are doing their part to build a better world. ,7 .- fn ff 2 I . ,X if ff A I!! gr. 4 ff'ff Meet Mister Daly, Cal's own and newly-appointed assistant principal. Each member is required to ride at least once a week with an authorized group from Calumet. Sponsored by Mr. Elwood H. Smith, who is an accomplished rider himself, this club tries to promote equestrian perfection and sets an example of spirit and good sports- manship for the school. A breakfast ride is the main social event of the semester sponsored by the Eques- trian Club. The members rise in the wee hours of the morning and go for a brisk canter followed by a luscious breakfast in a nearby restaurant. The club, now completing its tenth se- mester, is one of the most popular clubs at school with a membership of over one hundred. Their monthly meetings have been centered around the theme Parent Counseling, and many outstanding speakers were invited to take part. The highlight ot the varied and numerous activities ot the P. T. A. this past year was the student performance Cal Cavalcadef' the proceeds of which were contributed toward a new curtain tor the stage and many scholarship funds. The members of the association, who are ever ready to co-operate with students and faculty in any project which would benefit the school, have been of great service to all. LOCAL OFFICERS MRS. P. C. Oh yes, there is. No, there isn't. Yep, there is. The winner is usually the one who can shout the loudest and usually it's Miss Lillian Sattler over a crestfallen editor. Of course Miss Sattler has been the Director of the Temulac three years and should win, but the poor ed can try. The office, 137, bursts with noise when the staff enters. They automatically look on the bulletin board for assignments and then race to the picture files to identify new pictures and fight for a souve- nir of the unusable ones. Then when a hectic day reaches its peak, someone calls time and a pause is taken for a satisfying candy bar. Work is resumed peace- fully when someone remembers he has to call the photographer. He dashes madly out of the room to 140 for the phone, knocking only a few victims down. The bell rings and the staff silently and slowly pass out CH Out of all the wretchedness and fun comes some hoarse voices, a few more knowledgeable people, and the Temulac. Tracing the path of this toil-worn soul, We reach 210. Here, the door swings open to emit a congestion ol' noise and laughter that is practically deafening. This is the Crier Office Where under the confusion there is really a singleness of purpose that enables the staff to turn out a really fine weekly paper. These guys and gals work hard and are aided and abetted by Mrs. Gwen Hultenschmidt, who joins in the fun as Well as the trials and tribulations of the fourth estate. Though there are moments the stories aren't in on time or the pictures don't print, etc. when an editor begins to tear his hair, these Calites like their Work. Ask the hungry students and they will say that the high spot in Cal's menu is the roast beet dinner with mashed potatoes: vegetables, salad, rolls, butter and milk. And how are these mountains ot food prepared? The largest kettle holds thirty gallons, and is used for fresh meat. Potatoes are bought in one-hundred pound sacks. Pota- toes tor French tries are peeled in a special machine about tour feet high, then put through a slicer, after which they are tried in large wire baskets. Doss, who along with the equally capable and inspiring leadership of the student offic- ers, have helped make the Cal- umet unit one of the best in the city. They have been responsible for the winning of some of the most coveted R. O. T. C. honors and awards in the South Sec- tion and in Chicago. Through diligent application of training and instruction principles, our unit has been able to place first in City Rifle Team Competition and thus has dethroned Bowen, which has led in this field for three years. The Calumet Picked Platoon also won honors in South Section by placing third. This not only reflects the good training of the men, but also their school spirit. To arouse more interest, de- velop initiative, and increase the competitive spirit among the men, an Honor Company Award was instituted by the Reserve Officers' Association in the schools of Chicago. The winning Company was to be decided by the merits it re- ceived on the whole during its weekly inspections, the scho- lastic average of the cadets in the company, and their individ- ual abilities taken collectively. A company of the Calumet unit won this award after a hotly contested battle of points. Dressed in red, green, and white they co-operated with the A Cap- pella in the annual Christmas program, as they have each year. You may hear this said almost any day by a Tem representative with a buy it or else gleam in his or her eye. If it were not for these trusty colleagues of the Tem staff, it would be mighty hard to get a Temulac out. MATH CLUB Under the supervision of Miss Rowe, Miss Mc- Enroe, and Miss Wernicke, these wizards of figures have four discussion groups each week at which the difficult and perplexing problems of mathematics are discussed and solved. Oc- casionally the groups meet to develop their skill for the annual Wilson Tournament. LATIN CLUB Working for a way of visualizing the high points of the romantic language, the Latin club of Cal has Well achieved its goal. Under the interested sponsorship of Miss Edith Boyd the E and S students direct the activities of the reg- ular classes. GERMAN CLUB Der Deutscher Verein, sponsored by Miss losephine Martin, is open to any person inter- ested in German dialogue. Sketches, conversa- tions, and plays, in the foreign language, are a few of the activities that take place at this c1ub's meetings. GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club under the direction of Miss Ruby Fremont does much in helping to beautify the school. Among its many interesting activi- ties is the research project with the Horticultural Society. Every week beautiful flowers and plants are placed around the school to promote cheerfulness. SPANISH CLUB Once a week the language of Cervantes and Cortez issues from the lips of Cal's students. It's Los Amigos Pan-Americanos in session. The members of this active club promote the Good Neighbor Policy by trips to the Mexican shops, theaters, and restaurants of Chicago. Mrs. Marjorie Murray is their sponsor, and Diane Holmquist holds the rank of President. SAFETY COUNCIL Safety First , is the motto of this group, while their goal is fewer broken bones . . from auto- mobile accidents, slippery pavements, or need- less running in crowded halls. This club also does a fine job of checking all bicycles and automobiles, and distributes pamphlets and posters. FILM AND REEL CLUB Every day is a busy day for the hard working group of boys who comprise the Film and Reel Club. Under the direction of Mr. Raymond Griffin, they perform an invaluable service to the school by keeping all the films, projectors, sound systems, etc. in perfect working order. Only A Cappella Knows une eniom Here are the Seniors of Iune 1948! Four years ago they entered Calumet with Graduation Day their only goal. Now as this day draws near, their minds are set on their future. High School days are rapidly diminishing. What now? College? Career? Do they face the future with confidence? Yes, they do, be- cause they know they have a background that no one can ever take away from them . . . their educa- tion. Everything the patient teachers have tried to drive home will be used in later life,-if not directly, then through the mental training which the work en- tailed. On all this their future will be built. All they make of themselves will come of the mental disci- pline Calumet gave them. lf they only could know how differently many of them would plan their lives. Now their ambitions dif- fer widely. All of them have a goal, of course, of per- sonal success, but all of them have been taught to feel that there is nothing incompatible between a goal of personal success and a general one of world betterment. While the Tribe managed to win only one ot nine games, they succeeded in tying two contests, while their lone victory was a thumping Sl to 6 rout of Hyde Park on October 9, Propelled by the power and passing ot Fullback loe Schultz, a four-year veteran, and the rocket-like speed ot Haltback Mel Chenier, the lndian backfield made a valiant ei-tort to overcome a decided weight handicap fthe backs averaging only l45 pounds a manl by su- perior speed and deception. Chenier led the Calumet scorers with 30 points, while Schultz was runner-up with lil tallies plus one touch- down toss. Larry Winters, an allecity guard, was the strong boy in the line, but he was ably surrounded by such de- pendable players as center Kent Buikema, guard lohn Wright, tackles Paul Clock and Ernie Goodman, and al- ways capable end and captain ot the team, Ken Her- manson. After losing the opening game of the season to Englewood, the seniors won seven straight games and it looked as if they might take south section before they suffered defeat at the hands of Parker and South Shore. Thus they ended the season with an 8-and-3 record to place them third in the section. ln the city play-offs the lndians were de- feated by Lane 47 to 45. Outstanding in individual play wereTBm Bondy, Bill Thomas, Don Wells, Bill Chris- tiansen, Perry Grant, and Willard Ken- nedy. Bondy scored 38 points against Cor- liss, tying a school record. The only blow the first team will suffer from graduation is the loss of Bill Bondy, which means that Coach lvers should have another topenotch team next season. JOHN IVERS, Coach Keep Your Eyes . . .
