Always has it been said that in their eager young hands lay the golden opportunity of making the future world the right kind of place-the kind of world in which each individual may live in peace and harmony with his fellow man, with a fair and just chance for everyone. To the graduating class of nineteen hundred and forty-six, this same mes- sage holds more meaning than ever before in world his . The young people who are going out to yt ceptl e responsibilities of the new world have training of the very best. Having lived through these past turbulent, history-filled years, they have attained a clarity of thinking, a strong courage to overcome seemingly unsurmountable obstacles, a firmness of purpose and a fair, tolerant, humane at- titude which will make the great ideal of the good neighbor policy become a reality instead of empty, idle words. The class will have a great need of all their courage and resourcetulness to meet the op- portunities and problems awaiting them in this new atomic era of peace. Holding their high ideals aloft, and with confidence and fearlessness in their hearts, they will triumphantly march forward, ready and willing to meet the challenges of the future! I hope the Words will be significant so that they will not be new to you when you re-read them years from now. They will not be cleverly new, tor Garnaliel probably took leave of his disciples ot old and .doubtless had the same heart-wrenching that I now have. I am sure, too, that he said, Congratulations and high hopes, as en- thusiastically as I do to you, No, there is nothing new in your situation and mine and the regard and confidence which is in- herent in it. lt is one of the eternal Verities, and makes my final words come naturally when I look into my heart: u Our hearts, our hopes are all with thee, Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears, , Our faith triumphant o'er our fears, Are all with thee,-are all with thee! The class of February, 1946, the first peace-time grad- uating class since 1941, was one of the smallest in the history of Calumet. Its small size accounted for the warm friendships and atfability which characterized its four years here. No one can ever forget those first bewildering days at Cal, or those last glorious ones before graduation. Then, as the last strains of the recessional faded away, nostalgia and sadness swept over the graduates, tor though their years here had been War years, they had been happy ones. The graduates had many memories to take with them, some joyful, others sad. But all these remembrances went to make up their high school years. The class carried honors with it, leaving the succeeding one an enviable record to uphold. The teachers and students will not soon forget the .class of February, 1946. The All Calumet Civic League, just as the letters A.C.C.l... imply, is the one school club to which nearly everyone in the student body belongs. lt is the hub of all school ac- tivities: taking charge of all of the charity drives or other drives for public improvement, many assemblies, the clean-up campaign, after-school social activities and runs elections of major importance to the students. The club has always been ready to carry through any improvements made in the school and to give financial aid when necessary. Mr. Edmund B. Daly, this year's sponsor, is ably assisted by Bob Goebel as president of the organization, Ed Sobol, Vice- president, Donna Shanahan, secretary, and Ruth Abell, treasurer. Other members of the cabinet are Cliff Leverence as Director of Ac- tivities, lim Lindberg, Election Commissioner, and Marie Kapranos as Director ot Clean-up. The main objective here at Calumet was the lunchroom and due to the untiring work ot the committee, a marked improvement was made. The Clean-Up campaign was climaxed by the Spring Sweep, a super dance held at Ridge Park. The entire program is sponsored by the Chi- cago Association of Commerce. H-In-In-m, heres a young fellow who was a member ot the Calumet High School lunior Honor Society. I'll make a special note of that. We need a dependable man tor this position. Good steady marks throughout school and an interest in its organizations are ex- cellent indications ot the type oi employee we'Ve been looking tor. To promote good scholarship and service activities is the aim of the Iunior Honor Society. Any student in the school from lA to 4B may join this organization provided that he or she is able to meet its requirements. These qualifications include an E average which must be maintained each semester. A student enters on his or her marks of the previous term and a certain number of service points. These are necessary in order to belong and remain a member. The sponsor ot the Society, which boasts many members throughout Calumet, is Miss Ienny Aasen. Running similar to Scotland Yard,-only on a smaller scale,-room l4O has in its accur- ate files the history of every student who has strayed from the straight and narrow. Whether it be a minor absence or a major cut, those in charge have your name on their records. Since the organization of this office, the attendance at Calumet has improved considerably. The Glory We've Gained OUR CALUMET Our Calumet stands in the dazzling light, ln her portals We learned of knowledge and might On her campus the lazy, placid hours Went, Our leisure cost us nought but the time we spent, But four long years of learning,-it cost- Was this in vain and the battle lost? Are We now to go forth in the World With the banner of truth and right unturlecl- Free from want and fear and strife With the right to liberty and freedom of lite? Are We now compelled by torce To let her history run its course? Or shall We now look back With sentiments gaze Then fondly remember our High School Days. -W. K. Crout. The very Word brings to the minds of the Iune '46 class pleasant memories of their four years at Calumet. Pep assemblies, Clean-up dances, variety shows, prorns, and many other activities were jammed into the school day already filled with Work and study. Although peace has once again returned to most of the World, there are many boys who are still in the serv- ice helping to make this peace permanent. This year's graduating class has been noticeably diminished by the ever increasing number of students serving in the armed forces. The student body offers to them a heartfelt vote of thanks for shouldering the responsibility to keep our world the Way We Want it. Remembering the great sacrifices made for the sake of humanity in the last four years, this class of lune '46 pledges itself that to the best of their ability, these sac- rifices Will not have been made in vain. Sliding into Home Plate There's the Wind-Up is Here's the stretch, the pitch, and there's a hot grounder down to the third baseman, over to sec- ond: out, back to first: he's out, a snappy double play!-and the ln- dians pepper the ball around. As the Temulac goes to press, the Calumet nine is tied for first with six Wins and one mere setback, the latter a 4 to 1 defeat by F en- ger With Whom it is tied at pres- ent. Several '45 vets coupled with promising rookies and the expert coaching of Iohn lvers has pro- duced one of the finest squads ever in the annals of Calumet High. The high spot in the sea- son was the no-hit, no-run per- formance by bespectacled Bob Reem over Hyde Park by a mar- gin oi eleven runs, including a pair of triples and a circuit Wal- lop by Al Karge. Except for a few misplays and Walks, Hyde Park was putty in Cal's rnitts. If Backing Up the Play Mugging at Third All-American Game YS' , .We , Our Muscle Men in Action WRESTLING Cal's Wrestling team, coached by Mr. Richard Busch, although riddled With injur- ies, turned in many a commendable per- formance Whether it counted on the credit or debit side ot the scoring ledger. The team chalked up victories over Lind- blom and Bowen but bowed to Hirsch, C.V.S., Parker, and Morgan Park, the latter in a very close match. The leading scorers of the squad and Weights Were: Lambros Cl65D, lohnston Cl75l, Karge Cl45J, Petraglio Cll2D, Christiano 1955, and Rickert CQSD, While each ot the rest also turned in outstanding bouts. SWIMMING dai?-s-e f7'k Churning a Watery Path For the first time in the last few years, Calumet fielded a swimming team. Mr. Francis Hansen, Who has returned from the Navy, Was the coach. The Iuniors exhibited a hard-fighting squad, but they could not match the Sen- iors, and lost several contests. In the City meet Cal took fifth place in the back-stroke, the breast-stroke, and also fifth in the medley contest. Where We really made a showing, how- ever, was in the group of the Senior mer- men. They had a highly successful season in spite of the fact that their opponents, Lindblom, Fenger, Hirsch, Morgan Park, Parker, South Shore, and Tilden were strong and experienced in themselves. When the points were finally tallied for the South Sec- tion championship, Calumet had rolled up a total of 466.5 points, while their adversaries ran a mere 4OU.5.
