Why then, you might ask. have we of the past generation failed? Why are we now involved in another great war in the defense of democracy? Will it ever be possible to have peace on this earth for all? We might spend much of our time looking backward with regret. Shall we? No. rather let us look forward, and plan ff0m UUR PRIIIEIPHL together for the future with the feeling of hopefulness which has always character- ized our nation. Every Calumet student will play some part in the world tomorrow -some in war. and others in peace. As we face the greatest task America has ever encountered, let all of us do our part in the home, the school and the com- munity, and let us press onward hopefully and courageously to the things which lie ahead. Page fi ' SENIOR GIRLS' COUFICIL he Senior Girls' Council is truly one of Calumet's most worthwhile clubs and it deserves a great deal of credit. It is an organization of those girls in the graduating class who are the most outstanding in scho- lastic ability and initiative. The group sponsors the semi--annual Frolics. gives a tea for the mothers of the graduates, and works on other school activities. This semester even more has been asked oi the Council. Our nation is at war and it is the patriotic duty of every freedom-loving American to do every- thing in his power to help us win. The Senior Council members do not consider themselves exempt. They organized the sale of war bonds and stamps at Calu- met. Atter this successful venture. they began another drive to salvage waste materials. These were no small under- takings for such a group. but the Senior Girls' Council only considers this their share of the war effort. The movie operators are undoubtedly one of the most active groups in the school. They operate the machines that show the movies loaned to the school by the Board of Education for use in the different educa- tional departments. And now that air raid drills are part oi school routine, hall guards Page 48 are invaluable in enforcing rules. The Safety Council, also, functions in like manner. Last, but not least, come the Clean-up Campaigners. This year they not only cleaned up: they also sifted out and gathered up quantities of articles valu- able to the war production program. Two months before their graduation, the United States had entered the World War. But. the class set about graduation as usual. The speeches delivered that night could not escape having interwoven in them thoughts of war, and the willingness of each student to do his part was apparent. As a symbol of helpfulness and patriotism. the parting gift of the class to the school was a fifty dollar United States Defense Bond. Richard Alm was Class Orator and top math student of the class. Virginia Murphy was valedictorian, and Delores Nicosia salutorian. This class was made up of only 214 graduates. but its importance was manifested in the cooperation, friendliness and goodfellowship displayed by each and every member of the class. Certainly every member of the Class of Iune, 1942, expressed that sweet sorrow on commencement day. These fine young men and women, who have prepared themselves to undertake the responsibilities and duties of life, entered into a new world. They made their debut into a world. war torn and filled with catastrophe. However, they entered this strange world with the hope, determination, and confidence that some day soon all might be at peace again. g The Iune Class of 1942 manifested its importance through the cooperative work and lead- ership of its class members. Among the celebrities of this class are: Cliff Allen, Shirley Anderson, Lois Barlow, Edward Finnegan, Shirley Kincaid, Chuck Iohnson, Shirley Lowry, Patricia Prindiville, Allen Sandberg, Betty Woodward, and Wendell Zimmers. Perhaps tomor- row will find that the executives of our city and country have been the members of the Class of Iune, 1942. CLASS DAY COMMITTEE IHITTEES . . Physical examinations had been given to all 4A girls to compare their present health with the condition they were in as freshies. Through this examination. the instructors of physical education discovered various changes. The teachers of this department attempt to help the girls correct any defaults. FUUTTBHLL 1941 alumet's football team, under the leader- ship of a new coach, Iohn Boyle, showed plenty of fighting spirit to finish the season in a sixth place tie with Parker and Morgan Park. The team started the season very mildly by losing to Bowen 8-0 and tying the highly touted Parker team 0-0. In the Parker game Calumet twice knocked at the door of victory but could not move the ball over the stripe that means touchdown. In the first night game of the season an overflow crowd of cheering Calumet students saw their team turned back by Morgan Park 14-0, in which the game was much closer than the score indicates. The next two games showed Calumet getting stronger and even though we were defeated in both games the other teams had plenty of trouble winning. Hyde Park beat our boys 20-6 and the squad was nosed out by Hirsch 19-6. Page 112 J nf X M539 ! 'lt 1. Mum. Calumet's winning bubble finally burst and they drubbed South Shore and Harper. Calumet defeated South Shore 19-6 and in this game Iuhl Kauffman showed why he was elected most valuable player on Cal's team by passing, running, and kicking Cal to victory. Harper also took a lacing from our boys 19-14. These two victories spurred the student body to attend the game with Fenger in great numbers to see if our team could hum- ble the thrice Public League champions. Fenger's power, however, was iust too much for the squad and we lost 25-0 to bring the season to a close. Nevertheless, Calumet turned out a very courageous team who were not disgraced by so many defeats. Many men of last year's team will return this year to lead Calumet to victory on the football field. ns. ' 1 Page 113 THE PLAYER Davidson . Thiele . Fox . Straits . Anderson . Allen C. . Tracy . Page 130 URIEHL SKETIH UF CHLUIHET o one seems to know a great deal about the beginnings of the Calumet High School. Old time residents of the district, however, state that it began its existence in 1891 in an unpretentious building called the Auburn Park Grammar School, located at Normal Avenue and Eighty-first Street. Mr. Avon S. Hall was its first principal. When the village of Auburn Park became a part of the city of Chicago -so report states-but few rooms in the building were available for high school purposes but these few were utilized for secondary education. From that time on, for several years, the building, which housed both elementary and secondary pupils, became known as the Calumet High School and the Auburn Park Grammar School. Some classes, even music classes, were con- ducted in the four corners of the assembly hall. The elementary school obtained its name, of course, from the village of Auburn Park. The name of the high school, however, claims a romantic origin. It was named after the Indian tribe that long ago roamed over this portion of the Illinois prairies. The head of an Indian chief in an appropriately be- feathered war-bonnet still appears on Calumet's school flag. And somewhere else in the insignia there appears a Calumet, the peace pipe. And, quite prop- erly, the school annual carries on the tradition: Temulac is Calumet spelled in reverse. After annexation to Chicago became an established fact, population in the district increased rapidly. The old school could no longer accommodate the influx of pupils. The high school pupils, therefore, were moved to some vacant rooms above a tavern located at that time on Vincennes Avenue and Eighty-first Street. This is not as disgraceful as it sounds, for the tavern had been a stage-coach stop for passengers traveling from Chicago to Detroit and thus a certain historical, and respectable aura surrounded it. American educators, however, have never been sympathetic in attitude toward either saloons, or taverns. Also it seems likely that the godly among Auburn Park parents may have been irked by even the temporary expedient of sending their children to school in rooms above a tavern. At any rate soon after the Chicago Board of Education took charge of the schooling of youthful Auburn Parkers, an addition to the original building was built in 1897 and the high school pupils were transferred back to it. There were, at this time, no street cars on Seventy-ninth Street. Truck farms, instead, bordered the thoroughfare and near by, extending as far as Halsted Street, there was quite a pretentious golf course. Fields dotted with myriads of wild flowers, stretched from Halsted to Western. In February 1908 the first class was graduated from the Calumet High School. The five members of this distinguished group celebrated the event with a luncheon in the basement. Speeches were made by the principal and the faculty, and appropriate acknowledgment given by the graduates them- selves. Mr. Hall was still the principal. In February 1913, however, he left to become principal of the Joseph Medill High School and Mr. Grant Beebe was promoted from the faculty ot Lane Technical High School to the principalship of Calumet. Mr. Beebe immediately decided that a growing community like Auburn Park deserved a modern, well-equipped high school building, entirely sepa- rated from the old grammar school. He began at once to work toward this objective. The residents of Auburn Park supported the project enthusiastically and Mr. Beebe appealed to the Chicago Board of Education. The Board re- Paqe 131 Page 132 sponded with instructions that Mr. Beebe prepare a floor plan and sketches for the building he had in mind and submit these for approval. After long months of careful planning, which included consultations with teachers and interested parents, Mr. Beebe and his mechanical drawing depart- ment in charge of Mr. Booth submitted a set of plans to the Architectural Department of the Board of Education. These plans were received cordially, examined carefully, and finally accepted as basic for the new building. The years passed. No building was built. Mr. Beebe never abandoned his project: Auburn Park parents and teachers never ceased to hope . . . The children talked of the new school . . . Finally, in November 1926, the new Calumet High School materialized. It is now standing on May Street between Eighty-first and Eighty-second Streets, and the children who attend it are con- fident that it is not only the most beautiful, but also the very best, high school in the city of Chicago. In September 1926 several freshmen divisions began high school life in the new building. Amid the sound of hammers, saws, and planes, wading through sawdust and shavings up to their ankles, these pupils and their teach- ers carried on the business of learning and instruction to the best of their ability. Not until November, however, was this new building ready for complete occupancy. Then one cold gray day the remainder of the Calumet High School pupils tramped the mile or more from the old school to the new. Neither pupils, or teachers, who took part in this exodus are likely to forget it. But if they do they can filch from the morgues of the local newspapers the pictures that were taken of the event. They will see themselves, as they looked then. young and gay, arms loaded with textbooks, drawing boards, tennis rackets, basketballs, and all the other equipment that could be moved by hand to the big new school their parents and teachers had dreamed about for thirteen years. Mr. Beebe was not present on this momentous day. Two years previously' he had been transferred to the principalship of Lane Technical High School. Nor was Mr. Willis E. Tower, his immediate successor at Calumet, present. Instead the march was headed by Miss Genevieve Melody, who had succeeded Mr. Tower, Calumet's principal for nine short months only, and then promoted to the position of Assistant Superintendent under William J. Bogan who had become Superintendent of the Chicago Schools. From May 1, 1925 until June, 1933, Miss Melody was principal at Calumet. Under her able leadership teachers and pupils settled into the routine neces- sary for the successful carrying on of educational activity. Classes functioned smoothly: teachers and pupils were happy. They loved their beautiful new school and their capable, charming, and beautiful principal. Many teachers, still on the faculty at Calumet, speak affectionately today of the reign of Good Queen Genevieve. Every semester enrollment at Calumet enlarged alarmingly. Within two years pupil personnel doubled the original quota of 2,600 . . . Miss Melody, however, was equal to all administrative demands. Calumet became famous for its able teachers, its high class pupil-personnel, and its outstanding scholar- ship. Parents in neighboring districts clamored for permits so that their chil- dren might attend Calumet. They are still clamoring. The discipline of so huge a student body might have presented difficulties. But Miss Melody, aided by Mr. Robert Burger, Dean of Boys, and Miss Alice McKinley, Dean of Girls, and with the cooperation of the faculty, and an un- usually able engineering staff, solved all problems so well that the system she inaugurated has carried over to the present day. Calumet is a clean school, Calumet is an orderly school, Calumet's pupils are good citizens of the school, and the flowers, shrubs, and gardens of Calumet amaze all visitors by their beauty. During the last year of her principalship Miss Melody was ill. She was absent a good deal but she never lost control of school affairs. Mr. Robert Burger, assistant principal, assisted by Mr. Earl Daugherty, carried on during her absence in a manner that reflected credit upon his chief. In the summer of 1933 Miss Melody went to Sweden. There she died and was buried. But she will never be forgotten at Calumet. A plaque to her memory hangs in the auditorium. The Melody Scholarship Fund, supported by both faculty and students, pays the tuition of one outstanding graduate of Calumet each year at the University of Chicago. Miss Alice McKinley holds a unique place in the affection of Calumet alumni. Surviving all changes of administration, and loyally serving under each new principal, her unifying influence was a prime factor in holding the school together. For thirty-seven years Miss McKinley lived for Calumet. Daily from seven in the morning until the engineers requested her to leave in the evening, Miss McKinley was on the job. She never expected to be paid for overtime: the school was her life. She knew the name of every pupil: often, also, the name of his father, his mother, and his grandparents. She knew what was written on his final record card: she could catalogue his virtues, and she was aware of every trick he could play as truant or professional cutter of classes. She knew the kind of home each pupil came from, how many blankets there were on the beds, how much coal in the bin, and how much food in the cupboard. She spent her Sundays and holidays visiting homes. She spent a large part of her salary for milk, shoes, trousers, or carfare for needy pupils. She could well be considered the patron saint of Calumet. In September 1935 Miss McKinley became sixty-five years of age. Under the recently passed retirement law this meant that she must leave Calumet. Her colleagues gave her a farewell party. They tried to show their apprecia- tion: that was all they could do . . . Until her death in 1938 Miss McKinley lived quietly in her Chicago apartment, or paid visits to friends, many' of them former pupils. But she was not happy: she could not enjoy life away from her beloved Calumet. For one year after the death of Miss Melody Mr. Willis E. Tower was again principal at Calumet. The next year found Mr. Robert Jeffrey seated in the principal's office . . . Then followed two years under the administration of Mr. John Bartky . . . In September 1938 Mr. Elzy F. Downey succeeded him. In January 1940 Mr. Downey was retired, and Mr. Glenn C. Worst became principal. During this march of events there has been constant change at Calumet among both pupils and teachers. But so gradually have these changes oc- curred, that a feeling of continuity has persisted. Each administrator, as he has come, and gone, has instituted changes, brought about reforms, sug- gested improvements. Teachers have died, or retired: new teachers have been added to the faculty and quickly assimilated. Seniors have been gradu- ated. Freshmen have been enrolled. Calumet goes on. Located, as it is, in a community of home owners who regard it as a personal possession rather than as a public institution, it will continue, for an indefinite number of years, to serve the community and to hold its own peculiar place in the hearts of the pupils, the alumni, the parents, and the teachers, who have lived its life and felt its influence. This year of 1941-42, however, has brought another change. This time a change so sharp, and so tragic, that all have been saddened by it. The boys of Calumet-hundreds of them-are fighting for the preservation of the Flag of the United States and the Republic for which it Stands. Calumet is proud of her soldier sons. She will keep the home fires burn- ing while they are away. She will extend to them every possible service . . . And when the War is over she will Welcome them back and try to assist them to readjust themselves to civilian life. These returned soldiers, sailors, marines, and air corps men will have many chapters to add to the history of Calumet. And all of these chapters we are confident, will do credit to, and reflect glory upon their beloved alma mater, the Calumet Senior High School of Auburn Park.
