Zzzifclem 0 mai, Z?0cbe:5, Teachers in the English Department teach our students to write better English and to appreciate fine literature. Through this important department they are given a knowledge of books which is of use to them throughout their lives. They learn to appreciate a stirring novel, an educational biography, or a non- fiction masterpiece. Too much cannot be said for the wide vocabulary acquired in high school for use in the student's future business and social life. All of this is given with the help of Mrs. Cebatis, Mrs. Donovan, Miss Duffy, Miss Hogan, Miss Hyman, Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Patterson, Miss Sattler, Miss Waska, and last but not least the head of the department, Miss Bessie Stenhouse. Mr. Ault, Mrs. Delehant, and Mrs. Harms, three teachers equally important in our English education as the aforementioned, handle the Public Speaking. Now when the capitals of all the foreign countries are on the tips of the tongues of all news reporters, our Foreign Lan- guage Department if of vital importance. Our students are learn- ing the languages of these various countries under the supervi- sion of Messrs. Bechtolt and Kinnick: Madams Harrison and Murray: and Misses Berleman, Haley, Mealiff, Stellar, and Ber- tolli-who is pinch-hitting for Miss Drolsom who is on sab- batical leave. Knowledge of a foreign language gives the student a better understanding of the composition of his own tongue. Such knowledge is a cultural asset of the first rank. It is also a useful tool. For example, knowledge of Spanish undoubtedly will prove most valuable to those students who may be em- ployed in the near future in business that involves trade with our neighbors in South America. Due to current world conditions, social science is a subject of vital importance at this time. Mrs. Baker, Miss Crowe, Mrs. Law, Mrs, Murphy. and Mr. Whitman are helping the students to study present world affairs while Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Stry- ker give them a better understanding of the history of yesterday. Mrs. Keepers' student travels even farther back through the ages. Their intellectual pilgrimages pause before the sphinx in the desert of Sahara or penetrate the interior of King Tut's tomb. With students learning everyday to read the newspaper and follow the nations and their leaders up through the ages . . . who knows . . . perhaps in years to come the future president of the United States may be a former Calite.
