Assistant Principals KATHRYN COYLE we Ecu VL There was perfect silence in the office. CWhatl you say you have never seen the office perfectly silent? That's because you have never been there so early in the morning.l In the midst of this silence the minute hand of the master clock made one of its clicking sounds, call- ing my attention to the time. I noticed that it was exactly seven when the office door opened and in came Mrs. Harriett Hagen, freshman counsellor. Aren't you early this morning? I asked. No, this is the time I usually come, she replied. Then you must always be the first one here. Oh, no, sometimes Mr. Deegan or Miss Hogan arrives before me. At that very moment Miss Hogan entered. After greeting us she signed her name on the time sheet. As she did so she glanced at the list of teacher's names. Ohl she exclaimed. I see several unfamiliar names. There must have been some new teachers assigned while I was absent. Mrs. Hagen volunteered to tell Miss Hogan about the teachers who had recently come to Calumet. There have been several additions to the English department, she explained. Mrs. Katherine Murphy and Miss Bessie Stenhouse came from Westcott Branch. Miss Ruth Burton, who transferred from Lane, teaches most of the day at the branch, but has several classes here in the main building. You probably know Mrs. Marcella Dele- hant, another English teacher, who came from Westcott earlier in the year.

I judge that you thoroughly en- joyed your trip around the world. Indeed I did! I hope Miss Hill and Miss Stellar are enjoying their travels as much as I did mine, said Mr. Whitman enthusiastically. Has Mr. Iohn johnson returned from his sabbatical leave? Yes, he returned in Ianuary. He spent his year working toward his doctor's degree at the University of Chicago, just as Mr. Peterson is doing now. Miss Fletcher is studying at Northwestern this semester. I heard she spent most ot last semester in Mexico. As Miss Hogan and Mr. Whitman continued their conversation, the office doors opened and closed every few seconds as teachers kept coming in to sign the time sheets, to telephone, or to get keys, mail and supplies. After a while Miss Hogan said: I'm very glad to hear all this news, Mr. Whitman, but now I must prepare tor my classes. Time marches on. 1ti - it-W.-.warm-28 Scientists at Work C.
